Did men really do this to their wives

I have been watching 'I love Lucy' .In one or 2 of the episodes Lucy's husband spanks her. This is a 1950s mainstraem sitcom so definitely not anything fetishist/porn about it? I have also seen similar things in cowboy films. Was this really considered acceptable as recently as the mid 20th century?

"it does facilitate smarting the upper parts of the wives thighs should she be reluctant to cry"

Sorry, I think I need to go start a thread in FWR - apologies for my repeated horror in here.

PacificWerewolf · 26/10/2014 22:44

Oh, FFS, that website is horrific Angry

I am not sure about the I Love Lucy situation - was she not quite a strong character?

RJnomore · 26/10/2014 22:47

"minimise the effect of unforeseen stress incontinence"

Surely this isn't legal in the uk?

Re smacking in the 50s - I think we forget that it was jsut a short time since women even had the vote then, that we had no employment rights as such, that it would be 39 more years before we could apply for credit without a man to countersign for us (I believe) so the ILL thing I can believe did happen.

But for there to be an organised movement which posts on teh Internet instructions on how to conduct domestic violence and tries to coat it as religion - publicly and without the majority of us realising?

FoxgloveFairy · 26/10/2014 22:48

I just hit the link to Christian discipline. I will never be able to unread it! AHHHH! People seriously, hand on heart, hold these beliefs in 2014? I'd tell Mr Fairy to bring it on, but he'd take one look at the look in my eye and laugh his head off at the idea of running our home along these lines.

RJnomore · 26/10/2014 22:48

Not 39 - 30! Sorry.

FoxgloveFairy · 26/10/2014 22:50

My dog (a fellow female) would have the same attitude.

SevenZarkSeven · 26/10/2014 22:54

I read a lot of fanfic and a lot of it is written by Americans and they do seem to be a bit weird about spanking. I suspect there is some kind of cultural stuff here, in the old TV and films, and from the Christian stuff, with this whole spanking as discipline thing a strong theme coming out of the states. Like I say this is something I have noticed and found very odd from consuming output from their society, really, not from actually asking any in real life as it were!

ZombiePuffinsAreREAL · 26/10/2014 23:44

I had heard of the Christian Discipline stuff. I even know a few families in the US who go in for the whole, women in modest dress, only teaching creationism and something called Bible based science. So, yeah, sorry, the spanking thing does come into focus a bit.

SixImpossible · 27/10/2014 00:01

I have many 50s/60s/70s American sci-fi and fantasy novels. Women are never related to as equals. They either have some sort of vulnerability and must be protected - even if they are mature adult heroines - or are distant figures of sacred authority, who do not really drive the story onwards, and are therefore irrelevant. Though you do get the occasional significant crone.

Classic maiden/mother/hag.

In these books, if 'maiden' does something to anger 'hero', it is very common for him - and it is always 'him' - to threaten or actually carry out a spanking. Hero, for all his lusting after Maiden's body, cannot relate to her as an adult. That would put her on a par with Mother and Hag. Lust after Mother or Hag? Ewww!

Our generation have learned that there is a 4th role, one that can overlap all those 3 roles: Woman.

SixImpossible · 27/10/2014 00:04

That CDD website reads so kinky to me. Those wives stories, how she had to beg her husband to do it, how good it felt. Weirrrrrrd.

grimbletart · 27/10/2014 00:09

Well if my husband tried that with me his arse would hit the kerb so hard I would be in jail for assault.

Reading that link only confirms there are some really sick bastards about (and some really sick women).

SixImpossible · 27/10/2014 00:12

Something odd happened to my posts.

Role of Woman demands equal status with Men. Being looked after by a man does not diminish Woman to Child/Maiden. 50s man did not see this, and could not treat a sexually attractive female (ie Maiden) as equal. Therefore had to treat her as Child.

But, even then, spanking an adult was considered inappropriate, so it was risqué and safely kinky ("bottoms!" "Ooo-er missis!").

SconeRhymesWithGone · 27/10/2014 00:25

That CDD stuff is not mainstream. I know a lot of conservative Christians, and even some fundamentalists, fairly well. (I live in the US South). They do not condone physical discipline of wives, children yes, sadly, but not adults. I think those CDD folk are just kinky and using so-called Christian notions of domestic relations an excuse.

guaranteedpersonality · 27/10/2014 00:48

I think the website reads as fetishistic as well.

ArsenicChaseScream · 27/10/2014 00:53

The CDD stuff is pure kink. Church-sanctioned if you join the right church. Win-win.

ArsenicChaseScream · 27/10/2014 00:57

X post with about a dozen of you. I googled CDD for some reason once before - found several references tothe appropriateness of wives 'thanking' their husbands after 'discipline' plus stuff about 'presenting' for discipline by standing in the corner of living room with bare bottom for an hour even with DH's male friends present.

Most eye opening hour I ever spent online Grin

There are churches/ministers in the UK that have endorsed CDD, which is why I looked it up.

ArsenicChaseScream · 27/10/2014 00:59

There was quite a row about it all, about two years ago, I think. I have an idea a fairly high profile UK evangelist was somehow embroiled but its only coming back to me in dribs and drabs so I'd better not say Confused Hmm

ArsenicChaseScream · 27/10/2014 01:08

(Not that any of that explains hollywood.)

Canyouforgiveher · 27/10/2014 01:23

lot of it is written by Americans and they do seem to be a bit weird about spanking.

That is quite funny since the British tend to be first and foremost in spanking fetish sites. Most spanking fetishists take more note of the english and their history of spanking/sex over anything american.

This is about a fetish or sexual preference for spanking. many people have it -including many feminist women. It is a sexual preference.

Yes there are right wing christian sects/movements which advocate spanking of wives but I suspect it is really all a sexual thing - pure kink as someone said. But pure kink for both people, men and women.

the lucy show was nearly 70 years ago adn was one episode of very many if I remember correctly. it didn't mean the average Joe Blogs was spanking his wife because she burned the dinner. Unless she wanted him to of course ...

ArsenicChaseScream · 27/10/2014 01:29

Maybe the British spanking enthusiasts are just more furtive than their American couins by necessity, given spanking references seem quite mainstream. I can think of a few hollywood film scenes now I'm pondering it.

SconeRhymesWithGone · 27/10/2014 01:37

But I don't remember anything in Gone With the Wind, either the book or the film. I read the book years ago so can't be sure.
