Scottish TV reporting of rape

Did anyone see a report about a woman being raped in Edinburgh on the 6pm news tonight ? I was absolutely furious at the way it was reported. One of the first things police officer said was that she was wearing headphones - thereby implying she should have been more careful. Secondly the reporter then did a piece to camera in which he said ' the women was not physically hurt but was badly shaken' Not physically hurt???!!!!! I don't know if it was on BBC or STV so if any Scottish mumsnetters can tell me which one I am going to contact them and complain. I'm so sick of women getting the blame for being raped.

I thought it was in Renfrew or that way and not Edinburgh?

Thanks Groovee you are probably right. I missed the first bit of the report then had to go out so haven't seen the later news. Am going to have a look to see if its on the BBC Scottish news website. I'm still fuming, I need to do something...

There is a report on the STV website. Only know because they interviewed Dd about her PE class which they filmed and I missed the report.

Exactly pourqoui. Thanks Groovee. I will contact STV . I sometimes feel so helpless in the face of all this crap so any small thing I can do I will. They should apologise to her about the way it was reported too I feel. Although I guess thats the least of her worries..

Absolutely mimi, I firmly believe that many small things add up to much bigger things. It all starts at the grassroots level, and then bigger things take hold. We must all tackle the things within our realm, to make sure that our beliefs are upheld. Good for you.

Perhaps she wasn't physically hurt i.e. cut or bruised?

That's what I took from it, that she hasn't received any injuries. If that's the case, surely they were just reporting facts?

I think it's safe to assume that anyone that has been raped has been physically hurt. You know. Seeing as how they probably tried to avoid it and all.

"Not physically hurt" means not hurt in any way. It actually does hurt when someone rapes you, you know, so they were NOT reporting facts.
I think that's a terrible thing for the reporter to have said.

Very very badly worded. They could have said "she suffered no additional physical injuries during the ordeal" or something similar.

Saying she was raped isn't exactly ignoring the unwanted penetration is it?

it's akin to that whole 'it is so much worse for men who are raped because it emasculates them' - because like Empire says, women are made to be penetrated, so the rape part isn't the sex, it's that they didn't like who was having sex with them.

Even putting it like that 'unwanted penetration' seems to belittle the physical aspect of rape I think.

Unwanted penetration makes it sound like it was the unwanted bit that was the problem - "well, uf you had only complied, it wouldnt have to be forced".Vile.
