Female titular films

I was just thinking how few of these there are.
(Films where the title is a woman's name)

I know I don't need to tell the fwr board how sexist Hollywood is but this marker is a really obvious sign of this.

There are so many good stories that could be told about fictional or real women's lives. Filmmakers are really missing a beat imo.

Off the top of my head I can only think of

Erin Brockovitch
Salt
Elizabeth
Emma
Charlotte Grey ?
Shirley Valentine
Pocahontas

Thanks MeeWhoo, I'll do that when I have to write about film again.

I think as a lot of the Disney titles show, a film can have a title of a woman's name and still be totally chauvinistic.

Many of them would fail the Bechdel test (does it feature at least two women who talk to each other about something other than a man?).

TortoiseUpATreeAgain · 22/08/2014 11:00

Domino
Juno
Christine (technically, although Christine in the film is a car. But it is a film where the title is a woman's name)

MardyBra · 22/08/2014 11:00

Hannah and her sisters

MardyBra · 22/08/2014 11:04

Driving miss daisy

MardyBra · 22/08/2014 11:05

Although miss daisy is the object of a verb not the subject there

TortoiseUpATreeAgain · 22/08/2014 11:07

Saint Joan
Corinna, Corinna
Julia
Barbarella (Autocorrect wants to turn that into Navratilova, for some reason)
Sybil
Lady Caroline Lamb
Stella Dallas

Just out

Lucy

TortoiseUpATreeAgain · 22/08/2014 11:08

Oh, if we're allowed verbs then I can think of a lot more. I've been restricting myself to films where the name is the title.

TortoiseUpATreeAgain · 22/08/2014 11:15

Greta Garbo was a one-man titular movies factory. Besides those already mentioned, there's:
Ninotchka
Marie Walewska
Camille
Queen Christina
Anna Christie
Mata Hari
Susan Lenox

And not Garbo, but Queen Christina made me think of them:
La Reine Margot
Anastasia

LeBearPolar · 22/08/2014 11:15

I think I can think of fewer films with men's names in the title!

LeBearPolar · 22/08/2014 11:18

Rebecca
The French Lieutenant's Woman (dubious though as woman is identified as possession)
My Cousin Rachel
Trilby

LadyWellian · 22/08/2014 11:21

Betty Blue (probably not helping)

vezzie · 22/08/2014 11:23

"Tangled" would more naturally be called "Rapunzel" but calling it Tangled was supposed to make boys not reject it.

TortoiseUpATreeAgain · 22/08/2014 11:27

Given the forum section, I would like to point out that I did originally type that Garbo was a one-woman titular movies factory...

Actually, I am genuinely shocked that one-woman gets "corrected" to one-man. And in typing the last sentence it's also tried to "correct" it to on-demand and one-on-one rather than, y'know, go with what I've typed.

Theres quite a lot really

weatherall · 22/08/2014 14:33

There are actually quite a lot!

I wonder how this compares to male titular films?

Are these films good representations of women?

At a glance it is a very 'white' list.

Who gets to decide a film's title? The producer?

Does having a female title increase $$$?

Not sure if her diary counts.
