Why don't women objectify men the same way?

Male models make nothing compared to women in the industry, almost no one can name a famous male model, about the same thing for porn stars, cam whoring and everything else that's related to lust and looks. Male nude mags are a tiny industry compared to women's and they mainly cater to gay men. Wasn't Connery named sexiest man alive when he was 65 or something? Can you imagine a woman achieving that? Not to mention the biggest male superstars (Clooney, Pitt, Depp, Downey jr and so on) are all around 50 or pushing it. No woman around 50 would have that kind of ''star power''. When Scar Jo and Jessica Alba get to 50 barely any guy would pity fuck them. I have lived in 4 countries and the news pretty much always have a ''silver fox'' male anchors and an attractive female side kick who is 15-25 years his junior.

I think women do but the media is ran by men. I think all women are attracted to lots of different men as its human nature

TheSameBoat · 07/08/2014 15:50

I think women go for good looking men just the same, but we're taught it's kind of desperate, man eating and wholly unfeminine to express those feelings too much. And cougarish if you're older.

melissa83 · 07/08/2014 15:55

There are loads of men I am attracted to and I know my friends are the same. Dh likes older women and always has done from when we were very young, but I much prefer younger men. Dh always jokes the older I get the more attractive I get as he is into older women whereas I will probably trade him in! Everyone is attracted to different things though arent they?

JennyOnTheBlocks · 07/08/2014 15:56

Thank you, SameBoat!

I've been searching for the words to describe how I feel about the whole 'women objectifying men but it's different' stance for ages, and you've done it Thanks

It's 'natural' for men to lust after younger women, but women at younger men is seen as dirty and wrong.

Only it's nothing like either of those scenarios, really.

Why you're welcome Jenny Wine

10 sigh

Firstly, you say When Scar Jo and Jessica Alba get to 50 barely any guy would pity fuck them - I don't think that is true. That's a gross assumption. Off the top of my head, I know plenty of men who would "fuck" Julia Louis-Dreyfus, as an example. She's 53, and most men I know would readily admit she looks better than most women younger than her.

The point that the media is predominantly run by men is a fair one, and probably true in regards to why you tend to get younger women and older men.

But part of me thinks that it really is as simple as women not objectifying men in the same way as men objectify women - but that doesn't mean women don't objectify men. They are just looking for something different. Perhaps women overall don't find looking at a picture of a naked male as attractive as men find looking at a picture of a naked woman. Perhaps women overall prefer to look at a man in a damn fine suit.

You OP implies that you think it is a bad thing. Is it?

Abra1d · 07/08/2014 16:01

I think women do objectify men (some women, some men) as sources of money and material security.

Standinginline · 07/08/2014 16:02

This is just me ,don't know about other women ,but I just don't find myself sexually attracted to just a image. For instance ,my past sexually encounters have been with men that I've been very sexually attracted to BUT because of their personality. If I saw any of them in a magazine I probably wouldn't have looked twice. I do every now and again spot a guy that I think is very good looking but I never feel sexually attracted to them until I talk to them ,get to know them etc...
Sounds very cliche I know ,but that's how it is with me. I have a very high sex drive as well ,very straight ,BUT would probably get more of a thrill looking at pictures of naked women than men. When I first met my partner I remember thinking he's very good looking bit wasn't until I got to know him that I really wanted to jump his bones !!

melissa83 · 07/08/2014 16:03

I dont see the point of looking to men for money. I can easily make money myself so its more important I have someone attractive to shag. I cant do that myself Grin

caroldecker · 07/08/2014 16:04

I think younger women in media are cheaper and easier to manipulate/handle, so more useable

melissa83 · 07/08/2014 16:06

Im definitely not like that standinline. I think I must be a man!

hoboken · 07/08/2014 16:08

'Cos we are much less shallow?

Heads for cloakroom

TheSameBoat · 07/08/2014 16:09

Ah yes I hate this idea that women are attracted to money. I never have been in my life. I was always brought up to think I'd earn my own money.

Standinginline · 07/08/2014 16:10

lol ,Melissa 83 ,I did say thats why I don't find images of men that sexually enticing.

Wadingthroughsoup · 07/08/2014 16:21

Standinginline, I'm similar. I can admire and appreciate a good looking man or a man with a beautiful body, but it feels a bit like looking at a nice painting or piece of architecture- kind of 'wow, how lovely', but just their appearance alone isn't usually enough to make me feel an actual sexual draw to them.

The men I've been most sexually attracted to in my life, are ones I've known quite well, and have all been quite witty and wordy- it's those qualities that set off real lust for me. Obviously, I would need to find them physically attractive as well, but it isn't enough on its own.

NutellaLawson · 07/08/2014 16:22

But could it be that you find looking at a naked woman more sexy precisely BECAUSE women are so widely objectified. We are accustomed to seeing women portrayed in an 'on a platter' way (the boobs thrust out, the back curved to make the bum look rounder, the parted lips and post-coital expression) . We really only see that sort of thing in men in perfume/aftershave ads.

There was a chap who did a series of photos of himself posing just like some female models. Wish I had the link. It was only one seeing a man adopt these poses you could really see how ridiculous, unnatural and uncomfortable they are.

Another chap redrew female superheros as men, sticking butts out etc, which also showed the ridiculousness.

Thurlow · 07/08/2014 16:23

Annie, are you writing a book on feminism and trying to get us to write it for you?

CKDexterHaven · 07/08/2014 16:34

You fill up my senses
Like a night in the forest
Like the mountains in springtime
Like a walk in the rain

AICM · 07/08/2014 16:35

Evolutionary speaking men want to father as many children as possible and to pass on their genes and are always on the look out for attractive females to mate with

Women are on the look out for just a few attractive males to pass on their genes and mate with.

This leads to the average males of most mammals being more sexually selfish than the average female. I'm not criticizing men for this just saying that form an evolution point of view men and women view sex differently.

melissa83 · 07/08/2014 16:39

I think everyone is different and believe all these men do this and women do this theories are to guilt trip women. A lot of inadequate men are scared of a womans sex drive/who she is attracted to thats why some groups try to control women.

Squidstirfry · 07/08/2014 17:48

Literally, I used to enjoy coming to the FWR board on MN.

But it's overrun with teenage boys lately!

MollySolverson · 07/08/2014 19:49

Your op doesn't make sense (weirdly). Women can't objectify men in the same way because we (women) have thousands of years of history of oppression, not to mention our (women's) present.
An individual woman might objectify an individual man but society as a whole always objectifies women. Even male only porn or naked male models are generally posed in positions of strength and power wheras their female counterparts are generally in more submissive positions

ABlandAndDeadlyCourtesy · 07/08/2014 20:18

"Evolutionary speaking men want to father as many children as possible and to pass on their genes and are always on the look out for attractive females to mate with "

AICM, I'm not sure how true that is. Because infants are dependent for a long time and because mothers have reduced calorie gathering capacity to a greater or lesser extent after birth, plus increased calorie need for breast feeding, some investment in supporting the offspring gives more success in gene perpetuation.

ABlandAndDeadlyCourtesy · 07/08/2014 20:21

Excellent point.
