Anyone going? I'm thinking about it.

OP posts:

Kim..... in the last year, the topic Flora and When have posted about most is prostitution.

Anyway, we've moved on from that, and are now talking about the conference.

What do you think of Karen Ingala Smith speaking? Or Rachel Moran?

vicmackie · 03/08/2014 18:46

Some people seem to focus on trans issues a lot compared to other feminist issues

Stop trying to police what women talk about.

femin · 03/08/2014 18:47

And this is not a Trans thread. It is a thread about a radical feminist conference, which isn't even discussing transgender.

I think the issue of childcare at conferences is really important. A free creche is just an issue of space, finance-wise. It's the work of a few minutes to work up a rota for volunteers.
This is the relevant legislation www.ofsted.gov.uk/resources/factsheet-childcare-registration-not-required
'If (excluding childminders) you care for children under eight for four hours or less each day and the care is for the convenience of parents who plan to stay on the premises where you are providing care or within the immediate area. This type of provision has no long-term commitment to provide care for children – for example, a shoppers’ crèche, a crèche attached to a sports centre or adult learning centre, or an exhibition – and covers services where children do not necessarily attend every day. '

Given that 70% of women will have children, feminist events ought to provide childcare where possible. Mothers can bring toys etc along which their children can share.

The Scottish Women's Liberation Conferences in Glasgow have had creches.

Go Feminist did.

Fem 11 did but it was shockingly bad.

Feminism in London does, I think.

I'd advocate anyone thinking of planning a feminist event to try to have a creche if at all possible.

The easy access guide leftunity.org/guides-to-access-and-inclusion/ here's really good.

femin · 03/08/2014 19:13

FemiFest really is being organised on a shoestring. There is not the money to pay for the hire of a suitable room. And the rent of a room in Glasgow, will be far less than in London.

SuperLoudPoppingAction · 03/08/2014 19:15

It was a general point addressing the issue further up. I think it's worth crowdfunding though. Going forward, I hope feminist events will include creches.

boldlygoingsomewhere · 03/08/2014 19:25

The line up of speakers looks fantastic. I would only really be able to come for one of the days so I'm glad that is an option.

Hopefully you will be able to cover the costs of venue hire. London is such an expensive place for events.

SuperLoudPoppingAction · 03/08/2014 19:29

It really is.

I thought it was good with the women's liberation conferences in the '70s that they moved the locations - Birmingham, Edinburgh etc.

Different local groups would organise each one, I think.

CaptChaos · 03/08/2014 19:33

I agree. While London is brilliant and easy for people to get to etc maybe next year look at holding it in Reading? Or Croydon? or somewhere like that, which also has great transport links but will be way less expensive.

vicmackie · 03/08/2014 19:37

I'm merely pointing out that certain posters seem obsessed with trans issues

You're doing advanced searches on posters' names and counting how many posts they make on various topics. You're not best placed to be calling other people "obsessed."

You also have no idea how many posting IDs any of the people you're monitoring have. How do you know that FloraFox doesn't log in under another name to post prolifically about gardening? Given the controversial nature of the trans issue it would make perfect sense to have a different ID for discussions on that topic.

How spectacular to make accusations, keep bringing things back to trans issues, wait for other posters to arrive back from tedious childcare-related/work-related business and respond to the accusations, then accuse them of talking about trans issues yet again.

SuperLoudPoppingAction · 03/08/2014 22:23

Has anyone read Julie Bindel's new book? I think I'd quite like to read it, going by the reviews.

femin · 03/08/2014 23:41

Yes Julie Bindel will be talking about the deradicalisation of the lesbian community, which her book is about. It sounds really interesting.

Can I ask those of you who think this looks like a good event, to post about it if you have a twitter, facebook or Tumblr account. We want women who are not linked into radical feminist networks, also know about it.
