Policing other women. Rant alert.

I don't care if I get flamed.
A lot of feminists seem to think they have been appointed the Women Police who can then go around shaming other women for the things that are “not ok”. E.g Makeup, shaving, wearing pink, and more “crimes against feminism” and punishable by social attacks.A lot of online feminists seem to be petty dictators marching around and telling women what “true feminism” is and how I'm constantly being kept down by the “Patriarchy” because I'm a woman.
To be honest I'm starting to get a bit sick of it. In western society equality exists for everyone, right now. We have the same rights as men. I respect both genders and surely that is enough to me.
I was recently told I was letting down the progress of women by being a stay at home mum, marrying my husband and taking his last name and letting him being the breadwinner. I have had enough. I don't like the word feminist, it's tainted and all I picture when it's used is some angry, red headed woman, wearing thick rimmed glasses not letting anyone else get a word in.

This woman comes to mind.

Good Detective work BTW Mothership Grin

MooncupGoddess · 15/06/2014 19:10

Surely gingerism is banned on MN??

BillnTedsMostFeministAdventure · 15/06/2014 19:12

Since no- one attacked you on this thread in the way you describe, OP, I can only assume you are talking about some other women, who may or may not self identify as feminist?

AskBasil · 15/06/2014 19:12

I quite like her thick rimmed glasses tbh.
Has she called you out on misogyny some time AmazingMorning?

CaptChaos · 15/06/2014 19:27

The woman in the picture is iirc the feminist who was part of the picket of an MRA junket at the university of Toronto, who was houted down when she read out a list of ??women who had been killed by their partners???

AVfM then went on to post her personal details all over the web, it's members abused her on every single social media channel they could, posted rape and death threats to her house and her family, while being quietly told not to by that Elam cunt. He, however, uses her as an example as to why all feminists need to be fucked over. Nice perpetuation of her abuse by men there, how dare she have made a fuss! Angry

So thanks for the pic, OP.

Just for the record, I have never met an actual feminist who would ever suggest that, because you are married/took your husband's name/wear make up/are a sahm/wear pink/shave whatever the fuck you like. Most of the people I have ever heard talking rubbish like that have been men!

Oh, and in western society, women are NOT equal to men. Not by a long shot. We don't have the same rights. We have laws which say we should, but we don't. Sorry to piss on your chips there.

QisforQcumber · 15/06/2014 19:27

My thick rimmed glasses are Raybans, hideously hipster!

Bifauxnen · 15/06/2014 19:31

ah, it's Big Red, beloved hate figure of the reddit MRAs.

tbh I'm sick those who police others for not wearing make-up, not shaving, etc. Those who throw around "lesbian" as an insult for not toeing the accepted line. There are plenty of those.
Allowing, and fighting for the right for women to be whatever they want to be isn't bullying or shaming. Same as pointing out misogyny isn't sexist. Same as pointing out the social pressure to wear make-up isn't shaming all those who choose to wear it. It's making sure that girls and women are given the space to make their own decisions.
A disingenuous OP.

CaptChaos, I thought she was the one who shouted down someone who read a list of male suicide victims, and she retorted with 'Cry me a river'?

CaptChaos · 15/06/2014 19:41

Worra erm, you could well be right, the cry me a river comment was wrong, but.... she STILL didn't deserve to have what happened to her happen. The level of cyber bullying she had to deal with was awful.

Just for the record, I've never met a feminist who thinks that the suicide rate in young men is anything other than a tragedy.

What do you think the OPs aim was in posting this.

Seems a bit odd.

Not sure Sardines, she did say she was "starting to get a bit sick" so maybe she has gone for a chunder and will be feeling herself soon.

Bifauxnen · 15/06/2014 20:03

How can you have a societal attack against mainstream behaviours/attitudes?

rosabud · 15/06/2014 20:25

There is an interesting thread on here at the moment about how DV increases when the national side loses a football game in a major tournament. I wonder if it also affects how many "I hate you all" type posts suddenly start appearing on feminst internet spaces?

I am a SAHM, married, took my husband's name, wear make up when I feel like it and I shave my legs and underarms.

I am very much part of the feminist board on MN, and don't feel odd or out of place or like I'm 'letting the side down' at all. No one has ever been rude about those choices AFAICR.

You, on the other hand, are throwing around lots of generalisations that don't fit most feminists, either on here or more widely. And now I know the background to that picture, I think it's pretty low behaviour to choose it.

HTH

PenguinsHatchedAnEgg · 15/06/2014 20:42

Oh yes, and equality doesn't fucking exist. Even in Western society (as you put it). We may have the same legal rights as men (in most areas), that isn't the same as equality. It's like saying racism doesn't exist because all ethnicities have the same legal rights - see how daft that sounds?

I see that you're new to Mumsnet, AmazingMorning. Bit of a goady post on the feminist board, don't you think?

Fram · 15/06/2014 20:57

I am proud to be a feminist. I don't seek affirmation on the interwebz.
Yeah- I have thick-rimmed specs too, and so does my awesome DD.
And my equally awesome DS.

So do one.

ballsballsballs · 15/06/2014 21:13
