Dadwashere, "Society at large" is run, controlled and legitimated by men, who out number women in all positions of power and importance.
But you are derailing an important thread.
Boys not being allowed to cry is a red herring when you consider that girls' pain and tears are not taken seriously (hence the cutting and anorexia).
This is a classic "what about the menz" derail, as in: women aren't allowed to talk about women's rights for too long before someone inevitably turns up telling them to get back in line by focusing on males.

Sorry Buffy, I don't think you are bad ass enough to be Dittany

The truth is that these type of discussions get constantly derailed.

The real issue is do we think it is right that a man can buy a woman's body to use for sexual pleasure? I think that is always wrong.

Well Buffy, you are arguing against a man, so I'm not sure .....

I see that tukapov has been consulting his 'Boys book of MRA: great things to post on a feminist forum.' Here's some excerpts:

  1. deny that women are unequal in society - even in the face of breathtaking evidence to the contrary, just deny deny deny. There are some great websites you can link to here.

  1. make out that you support women's rights to work the sex industry. Note: this support must not follow through into any sort of support for women's rights to work in any real positions of power - only the sex industry. Do not draw attention to the fact that approx 80% of boardroom positions/ MPs/ high court judges etc are men. Women are there for the gratification of men, remember. Use words like 'empowerment' and 'choice'.

  1. pretend you think that feminists hate sex. It's not that they hate the sexual exploitation of women - oh no - deny that! Conveniently forget that the sexual revolution of the 60's was largely due to widely available contraception for women and radical feminists challenging society's conventional view of women's sexuality.

Hello folks,

It looks like tukapov was here purely to cause trouble, so we've shown them the door.

As you were!

It is my suspicion also that once we are all complete and functional human beings there would be niether the need nor the supply.

I doubt that you can end demand so long as men have a sex drive. The research into teaching monkeys about money lead to a monkey paying for sexual favours here so given the facts it maybe be several centuries before we are even close.

But you are derailing an important thread.

I was neither the derailer nor did I reply to the derailer, nor did I posture an opinion stone cold, instead I replied to someone who could not resist rising to derailer bait with what I considered was an incorrect opinion on an unrelated topic.

In regard silencing women this thread is full of very interesting observations and ideas but I have seldom seen any thread on any topic, anywhere, stay on course for hundreds of messages so I am not so sure it amounts to silencing women so much as it amounts to all threads, given enough messages, warp over time. Usually they seem to drift off topic as interaction peters out because people end up repeating themselves or finding others have already expressed what they thought.

To return to topic, the Swedish model seems like a great idea if its structure can culturally transfer. That said, setting aside ethics and morality, I am not exactly sure how making something legal to supply but illegal to purchase works in practice. I guess it would make a product/service uneconomical to supply?

Monkeys are not humans. Neither are bonobos. Or ducks or bees.

Wow! I am that person who cannot resist. I shall, in future, not comment on things I have no valid opinion on Hmm

This.

I can not see how they would work the Nordic model, how would anyone know what went on inside an escorts bedroom/flat/hotel room? People would find a way round it, like they do already by offering their time and not their services. Sex parties would still go on because men get an 'invite' and have to pay an 'entrance fee', so they are not paying for sex as such. Women would just market themselves differently.

The only thing this law would have any effect on is the street scene which I would like to see the back of because it is so dangerous for the women.

The site I posted has heaps of escort profiles with contact details updated daily.

If a client in Sweden calls one of these escorts and they meet up for paid sex, how are the Swedish cops going to even know about it? Let alone get a conviction.

And I remember a debate at Edinburgh's parliament last summer about the possible implementation of the nordic model for Scotland (MSP Rhoda Grant and a religious guy I forget the name of vs Laura Lee and Douglas Fox).

Rhoda Grant was asked how the police would enforce it and how would the police know what escorts do in their home. Rhoda stammered and all she could say was the police would "have their ways" (to put it another way she has no idea)

Given how quick and easy it is to find an escort in Sweden and the extreme difficulty trying to enforce the law, wouldn't you agree the law is a failure?

Here's the debate.

Richard Lucas and Rhoda Grant versus Laura Lee and Douglas Fox.

We know that the amount of prostitution has reduced in Sweden. Of course it has not totally disappeared. Murder is illegal in the UK, yet it still happens.
