I support Page 3, who's with me?

This might not go down well, but I cannot accept the campaign to ban Page 3. Here's why:

There is nothing wrong with the naked female body. A woman posing with her breasts on show is not lewd nor is it harmful to children.

Hypocrisy - Page 3 is no different to male models posing shirtless in women's magazines.

Prudishness - People who claim that newspapers should be banned from showing topless women are no different to the Victorians or to people in conservative parts of the world who don't allow women to show bare legs. It's the same principle.

Market mechanisms - if there is a demand for something and a consenting adult willing to supply it, then who is the government to get in the way?

Freedom of choice - if you don't like it, don't buy the Sun!

Is anyone willing to take me up on my question of the biggest single threat to women across the world?

Is it you Beth?

Do you speak with many Islamic Feminists Beth

I have actually not had the pleasure of speaking to a person Islamic faith about Feminism, unless of course I am not aware they are Islamic. Can you enlighten me? How do they feel?

Perhaps you should start a thread about it? You seem to want to move away quickly from the Page 3 issue?

K8Middleton · 17/01/2014 17:25

As far as I know, and I'm no historian, Muhammed is not raping any women. What with him being dead for nearly 1400 years.

Well that would be astonishingly rude and disrespectful Beth. I assume that feminists can find a way to critique the subjection of women prevalent in many Islamic countries without insulting their religious belief in such a manner?

What would that achieve?

See what I mean. It's a gutless and toothless form of feminism. Not my cup of tea, I'm afraid. If I see a man who kept sex slaves being venerated by millions as the most perfect man to ever walk the Earth, I have to speak up.

So what is your gutful and toothy form of feminism, beth? The one that doesn't manage to be radical and horrible and man-hating, that is?

I want to learn.

No. But he did. And when boys are being brought up to believe that he is the most perfect man to walk the Earth, and when they are being told that God sanctioned this as moral behaviour because at the time it was socially acceptable, I think that it could have a disastrous effect. And it does.

But nope, modern feminists don't dare speak up.

"I've yet to hear a modern feminist calling the prophet Muhammed a rapist and a child abuser."

I think maybe this is more due to a lack of listening on your part than a lack of speaking on the part of feminists.

Although if you were waiting for it to be reported in the Sun by the nekid ladeze then it is possible that you missed it....

This is the petition you want, Beth

Oh dear Sad Only a paltry 3000 signatures. Sad

Don't listen to the doubters, Beth. It's fine for a man to be more aroused wanking to porn than by his own real, live, fiance Hmm

Thants · 17/01/2014 17:30

Every feminist I know campaigns for the rights of all women including British Muslims. And abroad there are many groups campaigning the rights of women.
It sounds like you simply want islamaphobia not real support for abused women.

StealthPolarBear · 17/01/2014 17:30

She can't see that LRD.

Completely off topic but I'd rather be uptight than a goady troll. MN have always suggested that goady troll threads be reported. Just in case anyone finds that useful

LRDtheFeministDragon · 17/01/2014 17:30

I'm becoming more and more impressed with the flexibility of us modern feminists. One minute we're censoring free speech and sacking men from their jobs at the snap of our fingers; the next we're cowering under the table incapable of speaking up against notorious (long dead and suspiciously brown) rapists.

LRDtheFeministDragon · 17/01/2014 17:31

Well said, SPB.

StealthPolarBear · 17/01/2014 17:31

And was just about to say the same as Sauce :o
Uptight minds obviously think alike

IceBeing · 17/01/2014 17:32

very flighty your feminist....turn on you soon as look at you.

Yes, I have spoken to Muslim feminists about Muhammed. Most were ignorant of the exact nature of Muhammed's concubines, preferring to refer to the women and children as 'wives'. When I pointed out that slaves could not consent to sex, and that this meant rape, they were very defensive and refused to talk about it. Naturally.

Feminists only want to ban celery, didn't you know? Therefore I could never class myself as a militant celery-hater

K8Middleton · 17/01/2014 17:33

Where you topless when you said all this Beth? Maybe without your baps out they just couldn't hear the points you were trying so hard to make? :(

LRDtheFeministDragon · 17/01/2014 17:33

DH hates celery. The bastard.
