A "friend" just shared this link on Facebook.

www.viralnova.com/a-concerned-mothers-letter/

Words fail me.

" There are boys out there waiting and hoping for women of character. Some young men are fighting the daily uphill battle to keep their minds pure, and their thoughts praiseworthy"

Ffs.

Sorry, don't know what happened to the thread title there!

MrsCakesPremonition · 11/12/2013 17:22

Yep - it is all definitely the fault of the girls. Hmm

TossedSaladsAndScrambledEggs · 11/12/2013 17:27

Oh but she is so "wise".

And I'm sure I've seen plenty of pictures on FB of men who aren't wearing a bra as well. Confused

OP posts:
MrsCakesPremonition · 11/12/2013 17:28

In that case you might want to check that your moral compass hasn't gone wonky Grin. It will, you know, if you look at corrupting pictures.

TossedSaladsAndScrambledEggs · 11/12/2013 17:35

Worst thing is that my friend was all "hear hear" about it.

Where do I even begin to respond to that?!

Oh why do I bother ever looking on Facebook? Every time I do it depresses me!

OP posts:
nilbyname · 11/12/2013 17:35

Oh well, see I think that some people might see this through the lens of "don't rape". Which I whole hearted agree with.

Men rape.

Not because women wear something or drink something or say something. Men rape, because men rape.

However, I think the mother has a point that the girls in sexual poses, wearing very little in their teens are sending a sexualised message which is saying look at me in this sexual way. So while I don't think there is a responsibility on women to dress or behave a certain way just in case they "invite rape" (FFS, as if) but I think young teens do need to be made aware that these hyper sexualised images they make of themselves are not so smart.

TossedSaladsAndScrambledEggs · 11/12/2013 17:39

I agree to an extent. I think social media should be used very wisely.

But why is this so aimed at girls? I have seen plenty of pics of guys saying or doing moronic things on FB. The line I quoted in the op really made me boak...

" There are boys out there waiting and hoping for women of character. Some young men are fighting the daily uphill battle to keep their minds pure, and their thoughts praiseworthy"

Oh what hardships her poor boys have to face!

OP posts:
nilbyname · 11/12/2013 17:47

Yes I agree, many young people are striving the keep themselves together in this digital age, I suppose the woman is fearing for her sons, which I get. Of course she is going to be high attuned to what they are being exposed to.

Anyway, we need not worry, I expect she is praying for all of us Wink

BasilCranberrySauceEater · 11/12/2013 19:49

she is so going to be the mother in law from hell Hmm Hmm

scallopsrgreat · 11/12/2013 20:29

Oh I saw this a couple of months ago. The comments are horrendous. Woman-blaming shite.

Grin Basil. You're not wrong!

scallopsrgreat · 11/12/2013 20:30

Sorry I saw the comments on her blog I think where she initially posted this.

Procrastreation · 11/12/2013 20:39

I haven't seen the comments - but I sympathise with the letter. I'd no more like my DC to post sexy FB snaps than I'd like them to share questionable right-wing politics. I think both have the potential to define them in the future in ways which they maybe don't anticipate. Likewise, I'd counsel my sons to tread warily - because a sex scandal does stick to a boy as well as a girl.

I am so torn about this. Yes, it is woman-blaming shite from a mother who clearly thinks evil females are out to lure her precious boys into sin.
The potential mother in law from hell indeed rearing the next generation of mummy's boys.

But I do wonder what is up with girls barely out of nappies who pose in not very much clothing on Facebook. Sexy? Give me a break. How the hell they square that with complaining about girls being turned into sex objects I don't know. I wonder where their so-called parents are doing to allow it.

Thank God there was no such tripe as Facebook when my DDs were growing up.

Women's liberation - going backwards. Angry

ZombiePenguin · 11/12/2013 20:58

Wow.

I DO sympathise with her. My DS' girlfriend/her friends post similar selfies. But that is society. Tbh. If my DS didn't like them, he wouldn't have them on his Twitter. And that is society too.

Accusing girls and making them responsible for the sons though...? And being a friend with my DS doesn't make them a friend with the family. Some of his friends I don't like. Unless the friendship results in something harmful or damaging, or is likely to, then that doesn't matter. I don't have to like them, as long as my DS is safe and isn't being negatively affected, then meh.

TossedSaladsAndScrambledEggs · 11/12/2013 21:46

Exactly. I don't disagree with her encouraging people not to be so open on Facebook. But the whole "my boys are looking for a naice girl and you are all slutty" thing really pisses me off. They are friends with these girls after all!

But I do agree that online spaces like FB are too sexualised. It is a shame that their self worth is based on how many men they can impress with sexy selfies on FB. But yes, that is societies fault, and trying to blame these girls for corrupting her butter wouldn't melt sons is misogynistic.

OP posts:
PleaseJustLeaveYourBrotherAlon · 11/12/2013 21:48

My little boy is still actually little..so may I can't see what she is seeing. But fuck me, blocking the girls in his class because they have "sexy" pics up? Am I wrong to think I am actually much more concerned about my boy being exposed to porn rather than a young girl trying to be sexy?

And writing an open letter to make them feel ashamed and humiliate her sons

Fuck off you sanctimonious twat. (and this id from someone who hates "sexy" selfies in anyway especially when staged by 14 year olds.

lemonmuffin · 11/12/2013 21:54

i think it's a fabulous, very sensible post. I've saved it and am going to show it to my dd when she's ready.

CaptChaosGlitteryBaubles · 11/12/2013 21:56

She posted an apology for her woman blaming later on her blog.

TossedSaladsAndScrambledEggs · 11/12/2013 22:01

"Did you know that once a male sees you in a state of undress, he can’t quickly un-see it?"

Well I do feel sorry for my doctor then. Grin

OP posts:
JumpingJackSprat · 11/12/2013 22:48

What a patronising twat she is. Does she really think her sons don't look at and objectify girls, whatever they are wearing? Now everyone knows her sons are totally under mummy's thumb. They must be mortified.

PleaseJustLeaveYourBrotherAlon · 11/12/2013 23:00

It's so much easier to tell every female your son may come in contact with to not "act slutty" then it is to tell your son that women are humans with complex emotions and are capable of intelligence and kindness... Even if you've seen them naked.

What will happen when they get girlfriends will they be able to see them as people after they have had sex?

Santaspelvicfloor · 11/12/2013 23:05

This is a bit old now and when I first saw it it was accompanied by pics of her 'decent' sons topless having fun in the great outdoors.

There was a fairly predictable response from people with some very insightful responses saying we don't like sexy selfies of teenage girls but don't humiliate girls. Blame the media for making those girls feel they have to sell themselves in that way

Santaspelvicfloor · 11/12/2013 23:06

The predictable response was that gels nowadays are terribly immodest and we need to go back to the days when they knew their place

DumSpiroSperHoHoHo · 11/12/2013 23:44

I think it's a shame that the quite legitimate point she makes ie that girls (and boys) are more than just physical objects and should be valuing those aspects of themselves rather than promoting the sexual/superficial aspects of their personality - is pretty much lost by her making the point so badly.

Be interesting to see what life has in store for her when her DD gets a bit older!
