"easy for mums to wash and dry"...

No real reason for this post except I want somewhere to record my outrage and my dogs don't seem to care, they're just staring at me confused!

looking at these waterproofs

www.puddlejumpers.co.uk/zc/index.php?main_page=index&cPath=22_29

fully waterproof with taped seams, windproof and breathable, an end to that wet soggy feeling inside. Easy care for mum too. They can be washed and tumble dried.

why do people think it's OK to say these things?

I hate patronising twaddle like this. You are not alone!

heidihole · 06/09/2013 11:54

If my email address wasn't so obviously belonging to a female (ie its my name!) I'd email pretending to be a bloke saying I was just about to buy one but sadly see that I'd be unable to wash it easily so have bought elsewhere.

I hate this too - with a passion. I've just sent them a snotty email asking for the care instructions for dads.

Excellent email Buffy

Vatta · 06/09/2013 12:19

Have emailed them, I like to pounce on this kind of crap whenever I see it. My DH knows how to do laundry, he wouldn't for a second assume it's my job!

Beehatch · 06/09/2013 12:21

Damn those males and their deficiency in the vagina department!

heidihole · 06/09/2013 12:48

Ever since my DH got his penis caught in the washing machine door I've had to do the laundry. Same with ironing obviously. He tried to iron once but couldn't wrap his penis round the handle properly to lift it up :( but I find that the handle of the iron fits neatly between my flaps so I can clench it there and iron with ease.

I really hate this stuff. I was at a conference a while back and there was a presentation from a woman from a company making ready meals for kids, and throughout the whole thing she was going on about it being easier for mums, and busy mums this and that, and working with mums. I was tweeting from the conference and started a conversation about how such blatant sexism was hardly a good marketing technique, and funnily enough my DH also feeds the DC...

"Considering purchasing some Hi Fits for my children, but sadly I work full time and my husband frequently does the washing. How will he manage to care for them, as he is not "mum"? Will he find it fiendishly fiddly to put them into the washing machine with his large, manly hands? Will his lack of a vagina, combined with our failure as a family to conform to socially constructed stereotypes of male and female roles mean that we should shop for our waterproofs elsewhere?"

This is utterly brilliant - please post their answer.

Those instructions would confuse DH too, who is solely responsible for laundry in our household. He's also much better friends with our washing machine, mainly because I haven't been down to visit the thing in the cellar (machine not DH) for many months now.

Oooh I'm feeling quite naughty, I sent this:

I've just been on your site looking for waterproofs for my child. Your's look lovely. I nearly bought them.

But imagine my chagrin to find that your waterproofs are easy care for MUM! My husband does all the clothes-care in our house and he does tend to demand everything we buy is easy care for Dads too. Such a shame. My child will have to satisfy himself with a range of waterproofs from a more equal-opportunities marketing department.

Have a nice day and remember! Dad's wash too.

SirChenjin · 06/09/2013 17:09

Anyone had a response yet?!

SPBisResisting · 06/09/2013 17:13

Can such blatant sexism ever be justified?
I think it can in this case :o Reading these responses has brightened up my evening.

SingingSands · 06/09/2013 17:43

Easy care for mums? Why? Are we such dim creatures that we could be scared off by more complicated instructions?

JumpingJackSprat · 06/09/2013 17:57

Excellent i cant wait to see their responses!!!

HeartsTrumpDiamonds · 06/09/2013 18:01

Oh this is excellent. Cathartic even.

The Iceland one bugs the fuck out of me. "That's why mums go to Iceland."

I am sure there must have been campaigns over the years.
