Complaining about a product that doesn't exist unless you ask them to make it. Brilliant.

Complaining about things that could exist? Jesus...

It's all got a bit existential...

Ha ha ha ha I don't get round to complaining about things which do exist without adding things which don't! Agree they should probably have a filter on though so results aren't available

Actually complaining about the set up of the algorhythms is absolutely valid -Amazon acknowledged they needed to ensure those word combinations couldn't come up.

As for those of you implying that I'm a pervert who had been searching baby porn - really? You're that motivated to undermine any activity by feminists are you? And you can't imagine that this image might be doing the rounds on FB or twitter? Really? Hmm

One of the issues with this stuff, whether or not it gets ordered, is the normalisation of the "humour". It of totally valid to resist this normalisation but hey, if you're happy to accept the normalisation and accuse people who don't want to accept it of perving, good for you. You're probably really cool.

Basil - maybe you should check things before you repost them.

MP -maybe you should stop trying to stop feminists resisting the normalisation of porn culture?

If you don't want to complain, fine. I'm not telling you you should. I will complain every time I see this sort of thing though and I'll post so other people can do the same if they want. Sorry if that bothers you.

Basil, you're being disingenuous. You did not post this as a call to object about the normalisation of porn culture.

You specifically asked people to complain about the babygros designed by 'porn sick men'. You were mistaken, they weren't designed by porn sick men. They were designed by anyone who used the search terms.

The images and slogans themselves are a worthy topic of debate, so why not acknowledge your mistake and discuss this instead of pretending that it was your original point? It clearly wasn't.

I am a feminist. What I do though is check things out and use logic and reason. The facts here are that:

  • these clothes were not designed by 'porn sick men'

  • they were 'designed' by whoever searched for porn slogans on baby clothes

  • porn slogans can be added to whatever you want them to be

If you want to get angry about porn slogans on clothes don't be disingenuous and attempt a campaign based on the fact people are making these baby grows - they aren't. If you want to get angry about sick things being available to people who specifically REQUEST them, that's another thing.

I understand though that taking just a few minutes to look at the facts is harder work than blindly copying and pasting links to things and blaming 'porn sick men'. Sadly shrieking feminists like you give the rest of us a bad name.

I'm slightly mystified by your post Tethersend.

I admit I don't know the ins and outs of this t-shirt design things. But you say these t-shirts aren't designed by pornsick men, but by anyone who would use the search terms.

So who would use those search terms and put them on a babygrow then? Confused

When I posted to ask people to complain, I kind of thought it's obvious in the FWR section, that complaining isn't done for complaining's sake - it's done with a longer term goal. I know there's a school of thought that says feminists just enjoy complaining for complaining's sake Grin but it's usually for a long term goal and in this case, it's resisting the normalisation of porn culture. Sorry, I just thought that's obvious, I'm not being disingenuous.

From what I remember of the last incident with Amazon, they said that they would look again at the software so that a combination like this can't be used. That's what the goal is - to make sure companies keep updating software to ensure this stuff can't happen because it's not technically possible. It pisses me off when people come on and start making snidey comments about feminists being pervs whenever this sort of thing arises - if they don't want to complain themselves, that's fine, but FGS, this need to undermine anyone who does, is so trying.

As to having a debate about the slogans -well, not sure what's to say about them actually. Think it might be a bit of a short debate...

" If you want to get angry about sick things being available to people who specifically REQUEST them, that's another thing. "

Er, that's what I thought I was doing?

But hey, I guess I'm shrieking too loud for you to get that MP, your feminist ears are probably different from mine.

Off out now, bored.

In defence of Basil. It's in no way obvious that the website uses algorithms to create potential designs, however what makes her put the absolute blame on men is indeed troubling.

MichaelPortaloo · 13/04/2013 12:47

No you weren't Basil. You said they were designed by porn sick men. In fact they haven't been designed at all.

Report
tethersend · 13/04/2013 12:57

Im sorry you are mystified, Basil. Let me try again.

What you are angry about is a glitch in a website.

Whether or not that anger is justified is not the issue- the issue is that you thought the objects were genuine, possibly because you'd seen the website on twitter or Facebook, and reported here without critically evaluating the source.

There's nothing wrong with believing they were genuine- I certainly did- but it is churlish of you to insist you knew they weren't real all along, when your OP makes it clear that you didn't.

Perhaps the issue to debate is why we can see items such as this and believe that they exist- are they as far-fetched a possibility as they should be? What sort of culture lends credence to the idea of porn slogans on babygros?

you can still get a Jim'll Fix It babygro BTW

There was a discussion on here a couple of weeks ago, started by a feminist, who wanted people's ideas as to why feminism failed to connect with many people, when it's message is a positive one.

This discussion is a prime example. Start discussion with a false premise, make sure it includes a pop at men/male culture, have it pointed out that your initial premise was incorrect, move the goalposts, refuse to acknowledge your mistake, saddle up your high horse and clip-clop into the distance.

Such a pity. Now to go and find my hard hat.
