'Let Toys Be Toys' Organising Thread - Part 2

OneHandWavingFree · 02/12/2012 12:43

"Let Toys Be Toys - For Girls, and Boys" is a campaign started by a group of Mumsnetters, to convince retailers to categorise their toys by theme or function, rather than gender.

We're inviting everyone to 'like' us on Facebook, follow us on Twitter (@LetToysBeToys) and join us right here for discussion and collaborative decision-making about the next steps of our campaign.

Himalaya has been hard at work compiling the information gathered by our fantastic LTBT Mystery Shoppers, and we will be agreeing right here how the surveys will be ranked, which retailers we will be targetting with our message, and how we will go about it.

If you think that girls and boys should feel free to play with whatever toys that interest them most, and that they shouldn't walk into a toy store and feel pressurised to conform into archaic gender roles and stifling stereotypes, please join in the discussion!

Signing in as well. I didn't post on the other thread but I'm very impressed by all you organiser type people. All the stereotyping annoys the hell out of me.

Welcome Pozzled, great that new people are joining all the time Smile

Probably helps that the thread is a little shorter and downloads faster too (at the moment!)

Kim, my DD wouldn't wear the blue ones AT ALL. Will he wear the pink ones?

Just thought I'd copy over from last thread Himalaya's list of surveys that still need doing (and apologise profusely for not having done any today (RL plans going pear-shaped and all that) and promise promise promise to pull my finger out this week and try to do some more:

OK Surveyers, thanks for all your hard work so far, we are on the last lap (or the last lap of the first round, or something...)

Here are your marching orders:

Red List : No surveys yet submitted - these are most urgent

Entertainer - catalogue
Tesco - catalogue
Wilkos - store and catalogue
Boots - store and catalogue
John Lewis - catalogue
House of Fraser - store
Smyths - store and catalogue
Mothercare - store and catalogue
Hamleys - store, catalogue (?) and web

NB: Catalogue answers go on the 'online' survey, apologies for any confusion! (We do not have catalogues surveyed for Asda, Sainsburies and Toys R Us ? but I don?t think they have them? Or am I wrong?)

Yellow list: We have one survey done but could do with another to verify - not so urgent

Argos ? catalogue and web
Entertainer ? web
Tesco ? store
Wilko ? store
Toys R Us ? web
John Lewis ? store
House of Fraser ? web
Sainsbury?s ? web.

Green list: These are well covered - they don't need to be redone right now

Asda ? store and web
Entertainer ? store
Tesco ? web
Boots ? web
Toys R Us ? store
Debenhams ? store
John Lewis - web
Smyths ? Web
Mothercare ? Web
Sainsburys - store

Onwards and upwards.....

Marking place following stand up row with DH in My Small World today over a dolls house for DS! Apparently DS can only have the play garage for Christmas.

Also going to look surveys.

Does anyone have a pic of a ds enjoying a toy that would likely be signposted for girls? Would you be willing to share it on FB?

Would like to do an album for the FB page along the lines of "kids let toys be toys" but all the pictures we have so far are of little girls doing things that retailers might label "for boys". Don't want to compile an album until we can represent boys too.

nickelbabe I hope you're feeling a bit better.

and we haven't seen a post from MurderOfGoths since she said she was taking her ds to hospital on Friday. I hope she checks in and lets us know how things are, even if she has to put her involvement here on hold momentarily.

Hurrah for the Power of Mumsnet and all you terrific women (and men) on here. I would be so happy if the revolting tide of genderisation was turned. Have liked on FB.

Hi everyone, I am happy to copy over some of the Twitter links to FB as well, if anyone wants to give me the password?

I'll have a look at what can be xposted now ashes - onehand is the person to ask about fb admin, I can't add anyone. I was wondering about the logistics of that, because fb automatically updates twitter but not the other way around.

Any other ideas for twitteriness tonight gratefully accepted, as feeling bit braindead.

Thanks Trisha

I asked question on Twitter about if parents with boys have seen them being teased for liking dolls and kitchens etc. And if so, how do they deal with it.

But think it got a little buried. Would be nice to get this debate going on FB if we can.

Ashes - question xposted. Are you happy to do twitter again this eve? (I'm assuming that's you on tonight) The thing about xposting working one way is it means if I ask same question on fb it will be repeated again on twitter, so u might want to delete it if it gets xposted, IYSWIM?

ashesgirl · 03/12/2012 21:05

Sure, yes I can keep an eye on Twitter, tonight.

I haven't noticed anything coming through automatically from FB so far though. Would be good though.

Do other contributor's comments and pics feed through too?

Or best to just copy them over - and would they be ok with that?

I'm working late so can't discuss much now - but the automatic FB to Twitter posting proved to be a problem last week, when I posted a 37-pic photo album to Facebook, without realising that 37 separate pics were being tweeted simulaneously with no explanation as to what they were about.

I'm not sure that all posts suit both media equally well - maybe copying over is the way to go?

ashes - It did - I popped in and deleted a tweet when you weren't looking ! :)

OHWF Possibly. Will have a look at how other orgs seem to be doing it. One of the problems is with it being one way, so if someone posts a good pic to twitter then it has to be manually added to fb, at which point it automatically xposts back to twitter! I think MurderofGoths was looking into it but she hasn't been around for few days.
