Feminism: Sex and gender discussions

Would anyone like to join in an effort to convince retailers to stop categorizing toys by gender?

Following on from this thread and similar ones, a few of us are interested in discussing ways to send a message to retailers that it is not acceptable to designate 'boys' and 'girls' toy aisles which reinforce the message that science and adventure are "boys stuff", while girls should be primarily occupied with looking 'sexy' or practicing for domestic drudgery.

The first steps might be to draft a letter and identify a few retailers to target for an email campaign. Other ideas of how to get the message across are very welcome too, though.

Would anyone like to join in?

Why don't we do a shortlist of names and taglines, do a vote overnight on this thread, tally it up in the morning and then stick with it? I'd offer to write up the shortlist myself if only DS would GO TO SODDING SLEEP! Angry

Grimma I know it's not clear, that's what I meant. Something with that idea, only clear and catchy (in a way that "Free to Play" is not)! :)

how about "just toys...for girls and boys"

Unfortunately Just Play is being used by Mars/FA, slightly too big and too local a campaign

GrimmaTheNome · 26/11/2012 20:44

Darn, I'd been thesaurusing and about to suggest 'Just Play'. Grin

ashesgirl · 26/11/2012 20:47

Has anyone seen this today? All about the toy/gender issue in Sweden and how a new catalogue reverses the trend.

Thisisaeuphemism · 26/11/2012 20:47

Mm mrsdevere, I think you've got a point- equal play sounds like a (fabulous) political slogan.
Not sure about the alternatives although with tag lines they might work.
Just toys - campaigning for equal play for girls and boys

ashesgirl · 26/11/2012 20:48

Seen a line in there ...

'It's not a boy thing, not a girl thing ... it's a toy thing'

WomanlyWoman · 26/11/2012 20:50

what's happened to the activity on fb?

Thisisaeuphemism · 26/11/2012 20:51

OOoh - it's a toy thing might work on twitter...

ashesgirl · 26/11/2012 20:59

It's a toy thing (not a girl or boy thing)

?

WomanlyWoman · 26/11/2012 21:02

twitter names and hashtags are best kept short because of the 140 character limit - am sure people know this but just saying....

MurderOfGoths · 26/11/2012 21:04

That's what's bothering me trisha It needs to be short and snappy if we want to utilise twitter.

GrimmaTheNome · 26/11/2012 21:08

Interesting link, ashes - typical bloody mail, having to put gender neutral in quotes like it was some strange alien concept. Oh, wait, probably is for them.

ashesgirl · 26/11/2012 21:15

Just amazed they featured it all tbh Smile

OneHandWavingFree · 26/11/2012 21:15

I like It's A Toy Thing (Not a Girl or Boy Thing) :) Anyone else? Other than ashes who suggested it, of course!

trisha did something happen on Facebook? I've been logged of for an hour or so.

#itsatoything would be a great hashtag.

Why don't we just all post our favourite FB name, tagline and hashtag. Then this time tomorrow the most popular wins?

ashesgirl · 26/11/2012 21:23

Glad some like it. Smile Hope it's not a problem that it was inspired by the quote from the Swedish toy bloke in that article?

I vote:

Name: It's a Toy thing
Tagline: It's not a boy thing. It's not a girl thing. It's a toy thing.
Hashtag: #itsatoything

I'd better go, before I change my mind....

LadyKinbote · 26/11/2012 21:57

Suspect I'm in the minority here but I'm going to stick with my earlier preference: 'Equal Play' with the tagline of 'Let Toys be Toys'.

They're all good though!

Thisisaeuphemism · 26/11/2012 22:09

I am now switching allegiance to 'its a toy thing'-
Universal appeal, won't alienate the anti feminists (not immediately anyway) sounds cute, can get kids to say it (sorry kids)
