... Google suggests 'craigslist' as it's top suggestion. Based purely on my typing the letter c.

How many skanky men people must be using that site for this to be the case?

And in which case, how many seemingly respectable, loving husbands and fathers are using this site?

I am perturbed.

I think the moral of the story is 'don't believe everything you read on here'.

Well I get "currys, comet, cineworld and cbbc" too and I'm on my work computer. I don't know what Craigslist is and now I'm too scared to find out!!!

Most people will get facebook just by typing an F too, or E bay for an E.

on my iphone I get things I have googled beginning with 'c' - China Gold medals, caramel recipe, croque en bouche, and then CRAIGLIST is next, followed by lots of other random searches beginning with 'c'.

I get currys etc on the PC.

I get cath kidston, crabtree-evelyn and chocolate cake apart from the chocolate cake, that isn't at the top.

I get Cineworld, Confused.com and Clarks. Makes sense, always checking what's on the cinema, have just bought car insurance and new shoes from Clarks.

Link totally safe for work. Shows all the categories of ads on there. Fairly similar at a glance to the back of a local paper (which, I suppose, often do seem to carry adverts for escort services and massage parlours among all the myriad of other things...)

Slainte, I have just tried my ipad too, and:

• if I enter c into the Google space at the top right, it gives me Craigslist

• but if I enter the url of google.com at top middle, it takes me to google.co.uk, and there I get currys, comet and cineworld.

I had never even heard of Craigslist, so I definitely haven't been searching for it!

Is it to do with firms paying google shedloads for their links to come up first? Is it the sorts of things you google for most that begin with a letter? Is it a combo of both?

The reason craigslist has 'dodgy' associations is probably because of Philip Markoff - the 'craigslist murderer' who is alleged to have met his victims through craigslist ads.

I looked at the link - it wasn't so scary - i found a potential job as a time traveller and a work from home journalist

Right there is your problem, anyone can post anything they want on here regardless of its accuracy or truth...

craigslist was set up as an entertainment listing. Some people did use it to advertise prostitution services, but that has been banned. I don't think it was ever used to rate prostitutes or anything like that.

This thread is a good example of the need to check the facts before you believe what you read. It's like the time someone did a furious AIBU about the Adult Fiction section of MN because they thought it was all about erotic fiction (and therefore disgusting) rather than, er, books for adults.

I don't know why, but the amount of confusion on here is making me laugh.

Craigslist is a listing site - for jobs, accomm, things for sale etc. People have used it to advertise sex for sale. More famously (I thought) it's used to arrange 'just sex' hook ups which some men and women like. So there are a lot of reasons why CL is seen as 'dodgy', but it is not quite as vile as OP seemed to think. Definitely not a prostitute rating site!

For Google UK searching for the letter "c" I get results for websites relating to:

No Craigslist on the first page. And I found your "skanky men" comment a little insulting.

btw what do you mean by "prostitute rating"? Do you mean escort directories which enable both escort and client to leave feedback after the meeting? Do you realize this is actually very valuable for escorts' safety? If a client is abusive or violent an escort can state this in the feedback warning other escorts not to take bookings from that client.
