The group formerly known as women is not allowed to organise politically. The law disallows it.

conwayhall.org.uk/statement-regarding-radfem-2012

"Statement Regarding RadFem 2012
In consultation with the organisers of RadFem 2012 and our legal advisors, Conway Hall has decided not to allow the booking in July 2012 to proceed. This is because it does not conform to our Terms and Conditions for hiring rooms at Conway Hall. In addition, we are not satisfied it conforms with the Equality Act (2010), or reflects our ethos regarding issues of discrimination.

We had sought assurances that the organisers would allow access to all, in order to enable the event to proceed at the venue. We also expressed concern that particular speakers would need to be made aware that whilst welcoming progressive thinking and debate, Conway Hall seeks to uphold inclusivity in respect of both legal obligations and as a principle."

Potentially, but not easy I would have thought to find a venue for 300 people with 6 weeks notice

It would not be a problem if the organisers did their job properly, nothing stopping them from talking to the hall management to discuss what they need and why.

How for example do we know that the hall has facilities for disabled people, or that the proposed format of the event is what caused the problem. We do not we are just led to the idea that men do not want women to be politicle, complete tosh!

Prolesworth · 01/06/2012 19:39

"That said, we recognise the breadth of debate to be had amongst the feminist and transgender communities and it is our sincere hope that there will be constructive and positive dialogue on these matters going forward."

A vain hope while anyone on the feminist side of this debate is systematically silenced.

VashtiBunyan · 01/06/2012 19:41

Leithlurker, what are you talking about. Men's only clubs have not been banned.

Oncemoreintothe · 01/06/2012 19:41

Looks to me it was feminists opposing Radfem2012.

SardineQueen · 01/06/2012 19:43

Part of the reason for this is that in the past extreme trans-activists have disrupted feminist discussion by asserting that talking about things that only affect FAAB women is trans-phobic.

It is obviously not helpful to feminists to be prevented from discussing issues like abortion, maternal mortality and all the rest of it.

This decision means that the views of the extreme trans-activists have taken precedence which provides validation for their other views.

This is a huge problem.

If you accept that sex = gender and gender = a feeling, then logically sex does not actually exist and there is no such thing as oppression of women worldwide and people born with vaginas aren't necessarily women and people born with penises aren't necessarily men. It totally removes the framework for discussing any issues relating to sex, therefore no discussion can be had.

Nyac · 01/06/2012 19:44

Trans have their own trans events.

I will be demanding access to them as a woman. Inclusivity above all. I also look forward to taking part in liberal, labour and conservative party conferences.

Can my DD now go to eton and then join the bullingdon club?

Still a no on that?

How very peculiar.

Aboutlastnight · 01/06/2012 19:46

Sounds like the people running Conway Hall are dicks.

I am sure you will find another venue more than happy to accommodate you, I don't think there's any great patriarchal conspiracy?

Why did you choose Conway Hall, out of interest?

WidowWadman · 01/06/2012 19:47

"Some male only spaces are needed to address specific issues. I don't know what the point is of strawman arguments."

Such as?

VashtiBunyan · 01/06/2012 19:51

Certain health issues, men who have been victims of rape or various types of violence, elderly men who in some ways are a minority and so on.

But there are also lots of men groups that arguably aren't necessary but men just enjoy having them. There is nothing illegal about that.

SerialKipper · 01/06/2012 19:55

Not so, SardineQueen. It's perfectly possible to have meaningful discussions about race, and historically (and currently) racially oppressed groups, without hard edges to the groups.

And indeed without the simplicity of only two groups, one of which is deemed historically always the oppressor and the other always the oppressee.

Not only does it not make discussion impossible, I think it leads to a higher calibre of discussion. Lazy generalisations run into problems at the fuzzy edges and lead to a sharper definition of the issues.

NarkedPuffin · 01/06/2012 19:57

So you can't say that trans people aren't women without being called trans-phobic? And you can't talk about women's issues like abortion because that's transphobic because trans 'women' don't have ovaries or wombs?

So basically, a group has been allowed to redefine what it is to be a woman and any attempt to challenge that is hate?

How about we redefine ourselves as raspberries. Let them have the word. We don't need it to make us what we are. They need us to make them what they want to be.

Leithlurker · 01/06/2012 20:00

Widow woman:
Prostate and testicular cancer.
Male rape survivors.
Catholic bishop conferences.

Vashti. They may not be banned but unless a legal exemption has been granted no male only meeting will be given permission to be held in any space that is for public use. Plus the number of male only clubs aside from sex clubs has been greatly reduced by pressure from women.

SardineQueen · 01/06/2012 20:00

Serialkipper I don't understand your post at all, despite having read it twice!

Can you rephrase it at all or explain a bit more?

WidowWadman · 01/06/2012 20:03

Who actually is claiming that discussing abortions is transphobic apart from radfems using it as a reason for their transphobia?

VashtiBunyan · 01/06/2012 20:03

How do you get a legal exemption then? Given that weight watchers hold men only meetings in public spaces, and there are men's gardening groups, men's knitting groups and so on held in village halls, community centres, local colleges and so on. It can't be very difficult to get this exemption.

Oncemoreintothe · 01/06/2012 20:04

It's quite bizarre that people think it's just Trans-activists that have opposed Radfem2012.

It's feminist groups that have opposed Radfem2012.

SardineQueen · 01/06/2012 20:14

As I understand it the people who objected strongly to this have now turned their attention to another feminist conference which is generally open to all but has one women only session for survivors of sexual violence.

SardineQueen · 01/06/2012 20:16

The activism is surrounding ensuring that any and all women only spaces are open to MTF trans-sexuals.

Meanwhile in the US there is a conference with MAAB and MTF trans people exclusively (ie FAAB people not invited) to discuss how to get into lesbians' knickers.

Make of it all what you will.

Oncemoreintothe · 01/06/2012 20:25

Have you got a link to the information about that conference?

SardineQueen · 01/06/2012 20:29

Which one?

WidowWadman · 01/06/2012 20:30

SQ - the one which allegedly is set up by men and trans women to discuss how to get into lesbians' knickers. Without a link I think it probably must be a figment of your imagination

CardgamesFTW · 01/06/2012 20:32

"As I understand it the people who objected strongly to this have now turned their attention to another feminist conference which is generally open to all but has one women only session for survivors of sexual violence." Yes Sardine :(
Gonna post this again:[[

Really, really sad. They could've just set up their own workshop.
