Name and Shame

Anyone up for naming and shaming of companies with sexist adds, images or practices? No need to name if you don't want to.

Ikea - shanghai, popped in today. There was a wall display of aprons. All, regardless of unisex design, were stuffed to look like a woman was wearing them (boobs, waist, hips).

Clark's - Dubai last week. Advert proclaimed that because boys wear their shoes out faster they were tested to be hard wearing. Right next to an advert that said girls care about style and comfort.

WHY the gendered advertising? Why not just say 'all our shoes are durable, comfortable an stylish' or something more adworthy

Over to you!

Pot Noodle (Unilever I think) - currently running a competition called Easy Street - one of the prizes was a day on a Nuts photoshoot.

If you think it's a more interesting challenge Kim you're welcome to start your own thread. If it's not too difficult then perhaps you could suggest one...?

The Tesco fish finger ad. Mum slaving away, cooking for her sons. Then dad comes in and makes a fish finger sandwich for himself. Why didn't mum get one too?

It's always women cooking for men and when a man does get to cook, it's just for himself

On the Sainsbury's online shopping, the first option in the "title" dropdown is Mrs, which I found to be a bit presumptuous.

KRITIQ · 24/05/2012 11:51

Reason number 67 I'm glad I don't have a TV.

When I occasionally watch it (like when staying in a hotel,) I find myself aghast at the adverts, well and the programmes as well if the truth be told.

So, although I can't contribute examples, I do find it worrying that sexist advertising remains so pervasive - part of that wallpaper surrounding us with those damned limiting messages about gender roles. Gah!

Krumbum · 24/05/2012 12:28

ALL of the ads for formula milk/follow on milk have a woman feeding the baby and the woman is always wearing a wedding ring.

LemonTurd · 24/05/2012 12:35

KRITIQ I agree. Ditched TV over a year ago and also stopped reading magazines. Don't even glance at them in the shop.

Not seeing adverts all the time is good for self-esteem Smile

axure · 24/05/2012 14:31

Ads for Lawnmowers always show men mowing the lawn, also washing/ polishing cars, except for wet t-shirt style car washing.

ShirleyKnot · 24/05/2012 14:33

Boots have lost my trade (big wow) thanks to their repeated shitty, sexist advertising.

I agree that the Philadephia one is appallingly awful - I really hate the whole "aw, men are just like children aren't they?" vibe.

DioneTheDiabolist · 24/05/2012 14:39

ATM, Club Orange are running a sexist billboard campaign with a picture of 2 oranges and saying something about only using the "best bits".

Im not the only one pissed off with it as someone has gone to the trouble of getting a ladder and painting "Club stop using sexist ads" on one of them.

messyisthenewtidy · 24/05/2012 14:58

DS and I both boo at the ad where the wife is making some food for her "three fussy boys" then looks at her DH to indicate that he is one of the "fussy boys".

It's so bloody Tammy Wynette. Aw, he can't help it, he's just a man so I'd better get on and do it myself. Insulting to both sexes. Men are kids, women are martyrs who just put up with it.

I'd love to see an ad where the man was doing the cooking whilst the lovable oaf of a woman was laying on sofa.

Mechavivzilla · 24/05/2012 15:19

I hate the ad, I think it is for a vileda steam mop or some such, where the woman is using this amazing new mop developed in an ACTUAL LABORITORY to clean her house. The voiceover lists what it is good for and exclaims "It even cleans up after husbands!" while this poor woman cleans round the toilet. Gives me the utter shuddering heave. If my husband pisses on the floor he can bloody well clean it up himself.

Get0rfMoiLand · 24/05/2012 15:22

I hate that philadelphia ad. I just want to hurl that revolting looking sweetcorn slop right in his simpering face.

3 boys. That woman would be a BITCH of a MIL, with her tiresome mum of boys attitude.

Get0rfMoiLand · 24/05/2012 15:22

And yy to Boots 'here come the girls' schtick.

How infuriating! This puts me in mind of a book of old adverts I sent to a (feminist) friend for a joke. These were from the thirties to the seventies. There was one that advocated spanking a wife who didn't buy you real coffee and a picture of a man with the said wife in frilly petticoats over his knee. Yuk...

WasabiTillyMinto · 01/06/2012 19:35

We prerecord all tv so skipping the ads is easy. I see one about once a month and they are all ready odd.

i have enjoyed seeing women athletes in pre Olympic adverts though. I know they have been fairly polished away from their raw sporting prowess but its better than normal.

scottishmummy · 01/06/2012 20:38

I'd love to say yes Dubai last week

SardineQueen · 01/06/2012 20:43

The one that drove me MAD was the one for some kind of breakfast cereal or something and it's a family and it's to do with how it will keep them going all day

So older child says they will be doing this and that all day and cut to scenes
Dad says this and that and cuts to scenes
Then baby says this and that putting crayon on the walls and crying lots and cut to scenes hahaha

And that's it

So the mum has no "day" she is just the person who does the breakfast with no life outside of that worth commenting on or showing

Ooooh it drove me mad

SardineQueen · 01/06/2012 20:44

Should have mentioned at beginning that the family consist of mum dad and 2 children

Obviously as it's an advert Grin
