Ched Evans has been found guilty of rape and has Benin given 5 years. His co- accused was acquitted though for reasons that don't appear clear.

Hopefully this is a sign that our justice system is entering the 21st century, mini step at a time.

This just gets worse and worse.

Sky News yesterday inadvertently published the name of a teenager who was raped by Sheffield United football player Ched Evans.]]

Accidental or not, the management of Sky News committed a criminal offense in publishing the name of the victim. Is anything going to be done about this?

Violently assaulting someone with a wheel brace - suspended sentence, filming a verdict, a week in jail.

SardineQueen · 24/04/2012 13:33

Shock @sky

This is getting really out of hand.
I can't believe people would do this.

There's a brilliant piece about the tweeting in Sabbotage. here

KRITIQ · 24/04/2012 16:45

Some of the comments seriously suck though.

KRITIQ · 24/04/2012 21:31

At least it now looks like the police are taking action against those who disclosed the name of the woman.

SardineQueen · 24/04/2012 21:43

This is serious stuff.

If people (women, children, men) cannot have confidence in their anonimity being maintained, then that will hit reporting rates terribly hard. This is a really big deal and the police need to act decisively and these people need to be prosecuted to the full extent of the law.

Otherwise it is goodbye anonimity for victims of these types of crimes.

I am really worried for the young woman who has been named.

FrothyDragon · 25/04/2012 09:56

I'm concerned for her, too, Sardine. I was challenging one arsewipe's views on Twitter yesterday. When I checked back, he'd insisted on naming her to anyne defending her. :(

SardineQueen · 25/04/2012 10:13

Thing is

Football supporters can be obsessive
She is almost certainly in a very bad place right now

I am concerned for her safety, from others and from herself. Do you think the police are protecting her, do you think she is getting any support?

FrothyDragon · 25/04/2012 10:19

I know North Wales Police are monitoring the situation, but their latest update has said that, as of yet, no arrests have been made. I do think they really need to send the message home on this one, with a zero tolerance policy on those naming rape victims.

I just hope she's got plenty of support right now, from all the relevant areas.

SardineQueen · 25/04/2012 10:26

They need to come down on all of these people like a ton of bricks.

And look after this poor girl properly.

SardineQueen · 25/04/2012 10:27

Did you point out to the person on twitter that he was committing a criminal offence?

FrothyDragon · 25/04/2012 10:33

It was pointed out by several people before I got the chance to, Sardine. His response was pretty much a "come get me" challenge to the police force.

FrothyDragon · 25/04/2012 10:34

Claims he was a "martyr for justice", and claiming she had lied previously, thus was lying about this. :(

SardineQueen · 25/04/2012 11:33

I'm not on twitter.
So all these people think that the guilty verdict is wrong?

FrothyDragon · 25/04/2012 11:56

It seems so, judging by the Justice For Ched tag. Glad to see a large number of people calling bullshit on the people on the tag, though. But the fact the tag is being used, FB pages have been set up in his support, etc, just show how much of a rape culture we live in. :(

SardineQueen · 25/04/2012 12:07

Oh that's just appalling.

It quite regularly happens that a large chunk of the general public "get behind" violent criminals Confused

slug · 25/04/2012 12:45

Is seems the police have finally acted

SardineQueen · 25/04/2012 12:47

It sounds like hundreds of people have named her though, maybe thousands, they're not going to arrest them all are they.

This is awful.

AyeRobot · 25/04/2012 12:52

They should arrest them all. They managed to deal with hundreds of rioters in a short space of time, didn't they?

ButterPecanMuffin · 25/04/2012 12:54

I was appalled by some of the comments I've been reading on Twitter.

One of Evans' team-mates has labelled her a "money grabbing slag", as indeed have many other Twitter users, who believe she will sell her story.

Because yes, of course, she's going to lie about rape and go through the trauma of the court case, just so she can then sell her story to the highest bidder.

I replied to several of those making such comments, pointing out if it had been about money, she would have simply sold her 'kiss and tell' story to a paper. I got abuse back from them all.

It just proves how the myths of rape are still prevalent in our society.

SardineQueen · 25/04/2012 12:56

Obviously I think they should arrest them all.
But they won;t, will they, that's just a fact.

ButterPecanMuffin · 25/04/2012 13:03

I think the first thing they'll probably do, is track down the original tweet, the one that started the ball rolling.

That's what they did when Mr Super N. Junction, Ryan Giggs got named on Twitter, when no-one should have been naming him. A completely different situation of course, but I suspect the same logic will apply.

SardineQueen · 25/04/2012 13:03

Every single person who has "retweeted" or whatever you call it has published the name though.

They are all guilty.
