3 part debate between Sarah Ditum and Gail Dines on the topic, very interesting reading.

Must say that I tend to agree more with Ditum than with Dines. And also found Petra Boyton's quote very interesting:

?The evidence base on the effects of pornography is not particularly clear, given that many studies are limited by small samples; riddled with experimenter expectancy effects and demand characteristics; poorly designed and poorly reported lab-based research that often features male undergraduates who?re not representative of the wider population.?

Boynton continues: ?It?s not to say all porn research is bad, but because the majority of studies are so flawed it?s very difficult to draw any clear conclusions from them ? particularly around direct causal links between images and actions. Unfortunately this confusion leads to both pro and anti pornography groups cherry-picking particular studies to suit their respective agendas.?

It supports my view that, whilst porn admittedly is very problematic, the world isn't simply black and white, and neither the pro nor the anti porn argument is without flaws.

Why would women want to suck anything? We did that at our mother's breast or on our dummies. And that gave us pleasure but we gave it up before we went to school, though apologies to those who did this later?

Why would sucking anything in adulthood give us pleasure?

@widow "whilst porn admittedly is very problematic," You don't say why porn is problematic. Can you elucidate?

Molasses · 17/04/2012 00:07

Another Anna Span scene description (couldn't bring myself to watch another clip) was all about a man telling two 'barmaids' that he knew what women REALLY wanted in bed.

It's truly progressive stuff, this 'feminist' porn.

solidgoldbrass · 17/04/2012 00:36

Crackedceiling: well, a (heterosexual)woman might want to suck a penis because doing so gives the man whos penis it is pleasure - many particular sexual activies are engaged in, not because they bring physical pleasure to the person doing them but because there is psychological sexual pleasure to be gained from giving a partner pleasure. This isn't to say that a sexual encounter should be 'all one way' but there's nothing wrong with taking turns to give and receive. And sucking a strap on, while there is no physical pleasure involved, can be fun to do as performance, roleplay, feeling transgressive, fantasy enactment, all that sort of thing.

Beachcomber · 17/04/2012 10:36

Sucking a strap on is awesomely pleasurable for a woman cos it is symbolic of penis worshipping, obviously.

And everyone knows laydeez just worship the mighty penis (especially lesbian feminist laydeez).

There is nothing patriarchal about porn depicting women sucking plastic penises. At all. No siree.

AliceHurled · 17/04/2012 11:38

I love the idea that there is some reason that a women would enjoy sucking on a plastic dick that is nothing to do with patriarchy. Wonderful Grin There must be nothing that can't be claimed left.

I think Gail Dines is very shrewd and very thorough. She knows her stuff and she analyzes it well.

I just wanted to ask:

'Anyway, it's so obvious that porn is hijacking our sexuality. You only have to check out the relationships section. Porn is increasingly violent, feminist porn barely exists and is not hit upon, lesbian porn is a niche serving men mostly. Gay sex is a niche that is becoming increasingly marginalised. Mostly porn is about double penetration, double anal, multiple facials, and the obvious hurting of females.'

What is 'feminist porn'? I think that is an oxymoron.

And no, I'd rather no-one link to porn on this thread, if that's ok.

thechairmanmeow · 17/04/2012 18:26

if you get no pleasure from sucking a plastic phallus, heres an idea...dont!
but if you think all porn is patriachal or no women enjoy porn your simply dreaming.
maybe make a complaint to the masterbatory regulator (OFFTOSS).

as for worshiping the mighty god-cock, i think most porn actresses will laugh in your face.

Molasses · 17/04/2012 21:10

I know that a lot of sex involves mental turn-ons as much as physical ones, but when there is NO physical enjoyment for any participant, it is ONLY psychological.
Taking the physical pleasure out of a blow-job (or the knowledge of giving physical pleasure) leaves just the dominant/submissive aspect. I find it quite disturbing to say the least.

solidgoldbrass · 17/04/2012 22:57

Thing is, if you don't want to do something, don't do it. But don't insist that anyone who does do it can't possibly be enjoying it. And let's not blur the lines between a person being coerced into performing a sexual activity for a porn film and a person performing a sexual activity for a porn film which that person doesn't gain any immediate pleasure from, but is happy to act out as a performance.

oilfilledlamp · 17/04/2012 23:03

Thank you for the links Widow and it made excellent reading (now in four parts, sorry for the pedantry).

I'm on Dines's side. LRD asked what is feminist porn? It's a ruse set up by the pornographic industry to distract from all the gonzo porn that is the mainstay. The industry/hegemony makes billions of the oiled backs of naked people pretending to enjoy sex. When it's just a job. You couldn't make it up.

Like we'd all watch a fly on the wall documentary about someone flipping burgers in a greasy spoon. They smile a lot and tell you in the toilet that it's just a job. Yeah! Real w*nking material that is.

AliceHurled · 18/04/2012 08:37

Thing is, if you do n't want to do something, don't do it. But don't insist that anyone who does do it can't possibly be enjoying it coerced. And let's not blur the lines between ignore the wider context of a person woman being coerced into performing a sexual activity for a porn film and a person woman performing a sexual activity for a porn film which that person woman doesn't gain any immediate pleasure from, but is happy paid to act out as a performance.
