I am a teacher and married yet a male teacher always calls me "Miss" with not even a surname on the end. It really grates. I have asked him not to but he still does it and to all female staff members.
How can I explain to him why it is wrong?

He sounds horrible. A total fucking arsehole, in fact.
But OP said he calls all female colleagues this. Could it just be a habit of his rather than him demonstrating that he is a total fucking arsehole?Confused

BonzoDooDah · 04/03/2012 21:17

Grrr - he sounds like knob. I'd ask him again to call you by your name in front of your class as you find it disrespectful. If he ignores you see the head. Grrrr.

PlumpDogPillionaire · 04/03/2012 21:19

Is he really using this as a derogatory term to further enhance superiority?
So who's meant to be superior in this situation, then?

I think it's more likely that he's just being lazy, or self-consciously twee.
Perhaps you should suggest that 'Miss' is far too formal for your liking, and you'd prefer it if he called you 'Mummy'.
Or why don't you start calling him 'Little Man'?

FWIW, I know 2nd year university students who call their lecturers 'Miss'. I think they do it because they're uncomfortable about being on first name terms with lecturers, but find it too formal to address Dr/Professor (or they simply can't remember lecturers names). And 'Miss' is very much the norm in secondary schools.

BonzoDooDah · 04/03/2012 21:20

musttidyup - if he calls the male staff Mr theirname but can't be arsed with the women then I'd say it is a problem. If he called everyone just Mr or Miss/Mrs (bad memory perhaps) then he'd just annoying but possibly forgivable.
I know people working in offices where the men were all called Mr Surname and the women were all called by their first-names. Windows would have been smashed there if I'd worked there [mad]

SardineQueen · 04/03/2012 21:21

musttidyup he calls all men by their name and all women are simply miss.

OP has asked him to call her by her name (which he knows) but he won't.

Yes he is a total fucking fucking arsehole.

SardineQueen · 04/03/2012 21:22

whoops @ double fucking Grin

Dworkin · 04/03/2012 21:22

Must:

He is making a clear distinction between female colleagues and male colleagues.

Female colleagues = must be addressed as 'Miss' at all times even when they ask that this doesn't happen

Male colleagues = Mr Surname.

It demonstrates to me that this teacher is behaving inappropriately, to only female teachers, and doesn't begin to change his behaviour when asked.

exoticfruits · 04/03/2012 21:23

He sounds very odd. I wouldn't make a fuss-just call him Mr in return -without added name.

Dworkin · 04/03/2012 21:23

Double posting. :)

musttidyupmusttidyup · 04/03/2012 21:28

Fair point re using full names for men but Miss for women but I'd assume that's because a) it is commonplace to use the term Miss in school and b) he's a bit of a thoughtless idiot. Still don't think it makes him a complete fucking arsehole though!
It would not bother me in the slightest tbh but if it bothers you then tell him! 'I find it disrespectful when you don't refer to me as mrs OP please could you desist' and if he still does it then he is definitely a bit of an arsehole Grin

GrimmaTheNome · 04/03/2012 21:29

I'd be horribly tempted to organise all female teachers to respond to his 'Miss' with by calling him Jones Minor, or some diminutive of his first name - if he's going to address you in the manner of a somewhat dim primary school child, seems appropriate to address him in appropriate style.

SardineQueen · 04/03/2012 21:29

She has told him
She has asked him to call her by her name
He won't

Can you maybe try reading the OPs posts?

SardineQueen · 04/03/2012 21:30

Boy.

They all need to address him as "boy".

SardineQueen · 04/03/2012 21:32

But I suspect they're not that childish.

And the bloke would have some kind of massive disciplinary bullying workplace thing all over them quicksmart.

musttidyupmusttidyup · 04/03/2012 21:35

All right SardineQueen. Take a chill pill.

rainbowinthesky · 04/03/2012 21:36

That's the trouble. I don't want to go official and then it becomes an accusation of something I have to prove. Imo he is fairly misogynistic but obviously I can't prove it and would get slaughtered accusing him of this without irrefutable evidence.

OP posts:
Dworkin · 04/03/2012 21:37

I would be worried for any young person taught by this man. He sounds inadequate. He is asked not to do something but still carries on. Either he has a bad memory, can't understand simple questions or is a total arsehole.

I'm going for the third option.

TheOriginalSteamingNit · 04/03/2012 21:37

An awful lot of schools have children referring to male teachers as sir and female as miss, I think it's deplorable and hated it when I worked in a school. Teachers of both genders will say things like 'ask miss over there and she will help you'. I don't think they always mean it to be derogatory but it is annoying.

If he calls over 'hello miss' just call back 'yes, master?'.

Dworkin · 04/03/2012 21:38

No union rep worth their salt would dismiss your claim.

SardineQueen · 04/03/2012 21:38

Take a chill pill?

How about you try reading what people write before writing (frankly) a load of nonsense?

musttidyupmusttidyup · 04/03/2012 21:40

Errrrm. Okay. Refer to my previous comment. Really. Are you always this cross? Or just when someone doesn't agree with you?

BoffinMum · 04/03/2012 21:40

He needs a little chat from his line manager tbh.

Or you can always do a dominatrix on him. But that might give him a thrill.

SardineQueen · 04/03/2012 21:41

Does it irritate any of the other teachers?

That would support your "claim" and act as proof.

Thing is anyone working with him will know that he does this so there's no need for proof is there? If you talk to eg head of dept about it they will know he does it and may agree to have a word.

Push the point about bad example to students and disrespectful to all the female teachers rather than the bit about you personally wanting to punch his lights out! Say you are concerned about the message it gives, you feel uncomfortbale with it and so do some of you colleagues (if you can find any male or female colleauges who don't like it).

GrimmaTheNome · 04/03/2012 21:42

but obviously I can't prove it and would get slaughtered accusing him of this without irrefutable evidence.
I thought you said he did this to other female teachers so it wouldn't just be your word against his.

Dworkin · 04/03/2012 21:42

Saying "yes, master" sounds racist does it not?

In fact "miss" and "master" has got to stop.
