Women's Music CHAT THREAD

InmaculadaConcepcion · 27/02/2012 18:41

I've been nattering away off-topic on Stewie's excellent thread asking for suggestions for her International Women's Day CD...so thought I would start an ongoing thread for anyone who, like me particularly enjoys music by female artists and female-fronted bands.

I'm not looking for lists of recommendations - there are two threads called Music By Women which have dozens of brilliant suggestions of artists to check out.

This is more about sharing a recent discovery (artist doesn't have to be new, though!) - a song, album, band, singer/songwriter etc. etc. that have inspired or excited you and you want to share. Or to chew the cud about anything related to women's music that catches your interest. Please join in!

IC's Tune For Today:

Sharon Van Etten's album Tramp is already being touted as one of the albums of the year by various music critics.

As far as I'm concerned, this is the album's standout track and it is pretty awesome:

IC's Tune For Today:

An old fave of mine - I love the double strumming on the acoustic guitars and the two-part harmonies. It's one of their oldest numbers and probably still my favourite of anything they've done (and they've done a lot of good stuff).

IC's Tune For Today:

Something ethereal and relaxing.

The Magic Place by Julianna Barwick - title track of her new album.

Chill out and enjoy....

IC's Tune For Today:

You can't get much more iconic when it comes to female rock musicians than Patti Smith.

I've picked the song that first turned me on to her - when I heard it on the soundtrack to the 1980 movie of teenage girl empowerment, Times Square. In all its heart-rending magnificence, here's

IC's Tune For Today:

Rozi Plain is a quirky singer/songwriter who's a member of Kenny "King Creosote"'s Fence Collective and I for one find her thoroughly beguiling. She's another artist that doesn't bother with make-up and fancy styling, but lets the music say it for her. Here's a single from last year:

Extra train spotter points if you can point out Kate "This Is The Kit" Stables and Francois "Atlas Mountains" Mary in the video..... (looks like they all had a lot of fun making it, too!)

I think Touch Me Fall is my favourite Indigo Girls song but I love Closer to Fine too!

Ooh, I'm not sure I've even heard Touch Me Fall!

Thanks Sweet!

Agreed Stewie
Love the song, hate the video. Juan Iglesias (or John Churches as he'd be called in the UK...!) filmed it beautifully, but I hate the concept, pah, thoroughly bad taste in the mouth.
Cute bunny, though.

Meantime, here's an antidote:

IC's Tune For Today

The incomparable PJ Harvey.

Turns out to have been a favourite tune of Beavis and Butthead.
So that's nice Hmm

IC's Tune For The Day

I've been enjoying Ladyhawke's latest single - quite simply, an impossibly catchy ditty and perfect for a sunny Friday evening....

Emmy The Great comes up with the occasional stunner and I reckon this is one of them.

IC's Tune For Today

The Wraiths are a female/male duo with Mog doing most of the singing and Jon providing harmonies and guitar accompaniment. They set poems to music and they do it extremely well. Their rendition of part of Ford Maddox Ford's Antwerp is especially fine IMO.

This Is Charing Cross by The Wraiths

Powerful and rather lovely.

IC's Tune For Today

Caroline Martin was beloved of John Peel and recorded a number of sessions for him. Her stuff is often quite dark and biting but always compelling. She's launching a new album in two weeks' time, but in the meantime, here's one of her classic Peel Session numbers:

IC's Tune For Today

The Be Good Tanyas' mash-up of folk, country and bluegrass in wonderful female harmony is an enticing combination. Well, it tends to entice me, anyhow.
Here's one of my favourites of theirs:

This was recorded when Jolie Holland was one of their number - indeed, I think she was the main writer of this particular song. She's since gone solo, so worth checking out her stuff if you like this one.

IC's Tune For The Day

It's ages since I heard anything from Macy Gray. So I thought it was time to remember one of her excellent tunes.

I still like Lady Sovereign. I know rap isn't to everybody's taste, bu I do enjoy British rappers. I also liked the one who guested on The Streets album A Grand Don't Come For Free. She was bloody good. Can't remember her name though, sorry. Blush

Just been on the Goggle and it's a rapper called C-Mone. Further research is being done. :)

Thanks for the Lady Sovereign reminder, Nich - I'm not very well up on urban music, so it's great to get some recommendations in that area!
