Women's Music CHAT THREAD

InmaculadaConcepcion · 27/02/2012 18:41

I've been nattering away off-topic on Stewie's excellent thread asking for suggestions for her International Women's Day CD...so thought I would start an ongoing thread for anyone who, like me particularly enjoys music by female artists and female-fronted bands.

I'm not looking for lists of recommendations - there are two threads called Music By Women which have dozens of brilliant suggestions of artists to check out.

This is more about sharing a recent discovery (artist doesn't have to be new, though!) - a song, album, band, singer/songwriter etc. etc. that have inspired or excited you and you want to share. Or to chew the cud about anything related to women's music that catches your interest. Please join in!

Inmaculada, glad you enjoyed Which Side Are You On - I absolutely love and have been listening to the album for weeks now. My DD even goes round the house singing it now. Very rousing.

IC's Tune For The Day:

One of the songwriting greats of our age, this is probably my favourite one of hers:

Ooh, I rather like that Cold Specks tune, Mo! Absorbing video, too.

got the nicola roberts CD for my birthday and i LOVE it - so thank you for the recommendation! was listening to it on the PC this morning and my H queried whether it was her and then said that the track i had on sounded like kate bush (which for him is the highest praise imaginable...).

got emeli sande as well, haven't listened to all of it yet but am liking it too.

Oh I'm so pleased! I do worry when I recommend her, cos it's so not what I would expect to like, that I'm having a weird moment.

Oh and thanks to whoever recommended First Aid Kit. I've been enjoying that too.

Hmm, I must go back and listen some more to Nicola Roberts. I started listening, but got side-tracked so didn't take it in. The Kate Bush comparison immediately makes my ears perk up, though!

Plaudits to Lio for flagging up First Aid Kit!

IC's Tune For The Day:

I had a most enjoyable phase as a goth in my younger days (now there's a tribe where males and females get equally tricked up and out-do each other for hairspray and eyeliner use..!)

So here's one from the original Queen of Goth herself:

Staircase Mystery by Siouxsie And The Banshees

she has quite a mix of sounds on the album - kate bush wouldn't really be my cup of tea so it's her dancier stuff that i like better but the album as a whole is good.

i listened to it on my MP3 player while out walking yesterday and i happened to have listened to the david guetta album right beforehand and her album was like a breath of fresh air - i don't actually listen to lyrics that much but at least hers have some semblance of meaning/depth...

IC's Tune For The Day:

Very sad to hear about Kate McGarrigle's too early death a couple of years ago. This is one of my favourites of hers (sang, as ever, with her sister, Anna on harmony vocals and mentioning her daughter Martha in the anecdotal vignette the song describes)

Talk about giving birth to a dynasty, with both children (by Loudon Wainwright III), Rufus and Martha, having tremendous musical success too. A very potent combination of nature and nurture there, I'd say!

IC's Tune For Today:

Here's an artist I've admired and enjoyed for a long time. Introspective, interesting lyrics, off-beat angles on things, startling imagery, memorable melodies. She's also another of those artists who continues to make wonderful music in a career spanning 20 years....

IC's Tune For Today...

A Belgian/African group, now sadly defunkt, although the lead singer, Marie Daulne is still around as a solo artist.

They started out purely acapella, then added instruments later on.

You can hear the brilliant vocal arrangements shining through, though. Their album "7" is an absolute classic.

Oh, I was obsessed by Marlene On The Wall for ages when I was younger. But hadn't thought about it for YEARS.

Suzanne Vega's continued to release good stuff - at least, her 2007 album Beauty & Crime has got some excellent songs on it.

Sinead O'Connor is being interviewed today on Radcliffe & Maconie on 6Music, in case anyone's interested. I had a listen to samples from her new album and was pretty impressed. Some excellent hooks there and she still chucks in a fair amount of attitude. And that extraordinary voice, of course. Not sure I liked it enough to purchase it, but a definite thumbs up.

Just listening to this album for the first time in about five years. Enjoying the songs as well as the nostalgia...

I know this isn't quite on-the-topic but do you listen to any podcasts, IC? I was wondering if there are any with a female/feminist focus.

InmaculadaConcepcion · 15/03/2012 13:45

Do you know what, I was actually considering putting a Jem tune up as a daily pick, Mo! Great minds, etc. I think Closer is a gem (ahem) of a pop album - she pretty much disappeared after that, didn't she? I don't remember ever hearing of a follow-up...

Sadly, I can't advise on podcasts because I tend to either listen to the radio or to music playing, so haven't got into the habits of checking out podcasts. I'd be interested if anyone has heard of any, though...

IC's Tune For The Day

Has anyone else picked up on Grimes, yet? She's a one-woman Canadian electronica powerhouse.
Whimsical, ethereal vocals over choppy beats and grooves. I love the current single, Genesis, which is being played a lot on 6Music at the moment. Her latest album Visions is just out (her fourth in only a couple of years, I think. She's certainly prolific!)

Anyway, here's because the video is quite fun.
