More rape posters

This is my first time posting in feminism so be gentle with me. After being raped earlier this year I have taken great interest in societies viewpoint on rape. This daily mail article has made me so so cross. Why can't women drink as much as men? Why do I have to be mindful when I go out and not men? It upsets me. Just because I had had a drink when I was raped doesn't mean I 'asked for it' or 'deserved it' - the reason I couldn't say no was because he gave me no option.

Am I right in my thinking? It's ok to be cross is it?

Thanks everyone (well, most of you!)

The menz thing to me doesn't seem to say all men are rapists to me. If people get so cross at those advertisements what's the alternative? Just more shitty posters aimed at women then?

Don't even start me on the fact that 'rape jokes' are socially acceptable these days. The other day I counted - I heard 6 rape jokes that day. Ha bloody ha! And people don't have any outrage, they think they're totally normal!

Anyway :) I've seen the Harvey nicks advert. Will be complaining away!!

I saw this today, and had a moment of outrage when I realised they had the downright cheek to target an anti-rape poster at men Shock

I was however, relieved to read the text and see that it made no mention of a prison sentence, and that the some of the other posters place the blame where it belongs- squarely on the shoulders of the victim. Good-o.

Hmm

The prob with those Hertfordshire ads that target men, is that most men who rape women don't think they have done.

So they won't actually have any resonance. Most men don't think of themselves as rapists, because rapists are scary men in bushes and alleyways, not men like them and their mates.

DontCallMeFrothyDragon · 15/12/2011 19:29

Tethers, those ads are horrifying... :(

They also reinforce that old myth that rapes are carried out by someone you don't know, in some dark secluded alleyway or wherever... Home is that magical safe place.... Apparently.

JuliaScurr · 15/12/2011 20:12

Nice to see our old friend 'regretful sex' right there with rape because they so often appear so closely together they are frequently confused. Obviously we are too dim to be able to tell the difference and liable to accuse innocent men when we reconsider our irresponsible drunken sluttishness the morning after (very often while tucking into a breakfast kebab at a bus stop)

PetiteRaleuse · 15/12/2011 20:22

Ugh. HATE victim blaming. I know it's not the done thing but here is my blog post about it. I referred to being beaten up but... the same bloke did a lot worse... and apparently I asked for it... Here

I have come to the conclusion that the first reflex in society is to blame the woman for whatever bad happens to her, and to give the credit to someone else for anyhing that is good..

NOT all men are rapists. Of course.

(Not used to posting on here either...)

Newbabynewmum-

Thank you for posting and I send my heartfelt wishes for your continued strength and happiness. There is something very special about a person like yourself whom, having experienced such a traumatic event, seeks to help and educate others....

I agree with Stewiegriffinsmum-

Activism definitely makes you feel stronger.

ElfenorRathbone · 15/12/2011 21:50
