Feminist perspectives on transgendered people

Excuse the random intrusion (haven't posted here before) but I've been watching My Transsexual Summer on C4 and it's raised some questions for me; basically, I was just wondering if there was any sort of feminist consensus on transgendered/transsexual individuals, whether there's any difference in opinions depending on whether they are FtM or MtF, pre or post surgery etc.

Not looking for a bunfight, just curious, if it helps any I am a cisgendered female these days but went through a phase in my late teens of being desperately uncomfortable in my own gender and wanting very much to be male.

Tiggy, I am sure that you are right - most trans people do not behave like trans activists and would be sensitive in certain situations.

But I shouldn't have to rely on that, anymore than a black person should have to rely on white people to be sensitive. All minority groups should have protection under the law from discrimination.

Personally, as a trans-woman, I dislike it when Cis people try to talk about transgender issues, when they have't felt it before, it's like if a man came and tried to talk about women's issue's, you'd appreciate it, but it isn't their place, no offence, give transgender people a voice, DON'T try and talk for them (Us) :D

UnicornsRuleAll · 29/01/2016 18:37

Transgender* Transgendered isn't a thing.

It's like saying "I'm Americaned" I have always been, am, and wlaways will be a transgender woman, and I'm proud of that! :D Doesn't mean I should be considered any less of a woman.

Pot, kettle, etc.

DrSeussRevived · 29/01/2016 21:39

This thread is even more revived than I am, it's nearly 5 years old!

TamaraLamara · 29/01/2016 21:43

if a man came and tried to talk about women's issue's

Dead right. A man has, at best, limited understanding of how it is to be born, live, and grow up as female in a predominantly patriarchal society.

BombadierFritz · 29/01/2016 21:48

it's like if a man came and tried to talk about women's issue's, you'd appreciate it, but it isn't their place,. . . .

Sorry i know this is a zombie thread but that was too hilarious a comment to ignore

Yes, just imagine that. A man. Claiming he knew what it was like to be a woman and womens issues. Cos that would never happen

QueenLaBeefah · 29/01/2016 21:49

You might be trans but it doesn't prevent you from reading the huge, frikkin notice telling you this thread is 5yrs old!!!!

QueenLaBeefah · 29/01/2016 21:50

Did laugh at the we have no idea what it is like to be trans crap but apparently transwonen know what it is like to be a woman.

Can't have it both ways.

HeadJudgeLen · 29/01/2016 21:51

Who ARE these cis people to which you refer?

WaitrosePigeon · 29/01/2016 21:52

What is a cis person?

WaitrosePigeon · 29/01/2016 21:53

Oh for fucks sake this is years old!

ladyballs · 29/01/2016 23:47

Cis?

EmpressOfTheVulvaCupcakes · 02/02/2016 08:11

Cis is a silly term used by some transpeople to define people whose gender matches their sex - eg Unicorns would probably say that "ciswomen" & "transwomen" are both subsets of women.

It's silly (and rude) because
a) gender is just a bunch of daft stereotypes & nobody conforms to all of them
b) Tautology. Biological women just are women and don't need a prefix.

As for the issue of not talking for other groups, Unicorns is absolutely right and I wish more TWs recognised that they have no idea of what it is to be a woman.

ladyballs · 05/02/2016 11:31

Sorry Empress I was raising my eyebrow at being addressed as cis yet again. It's a bullshit term IMO used by MTT to denigrate women.

ladyballs · 05/02/2016 11:32

I was still a libfem squeaking on about cis privilege when this thread was started Grin

EmpressOfTheVulvaCupcakes · 05/02/2016 17:59

No problem Ladyballs, WaitrosePigeon was asking too!

toboldlygo · 05/02/2016 21:12

...and now to sit and re-read this thread, which was genuinely a noob's first interaction with feminism/gender/trans discourse, an awful lot has changed in five years...

EmpressOfTheVulvaCupcakes · 05/02/2016 21:43

I think a lot of us have moved on since this thread!

toboldlygo · 05/02/2016 22:02

If nothing else I've had a bit of a laugh at my naive and clumsy attempts to work through some adolescent gender issues. Grin
