I just registered myself on costa's website and under title they had only two options : mr or ms. I am impressed. Particularly in a week where I have received yet another card addressed to mr and mrs dhname. And from a friend who also did not take her dh name!!!

Trillian I think they should. I pointed this out to DH and he said that unmarried men used to be known as "master" (as in "young master xxx") and you only became "mister" when you got married. Don't know if that's true though...

Why do they need to know title at all? Just ask for firstname, lastname and if important a male/female checkbox. No problems ever if you write to me as Dear Firstname Lastname.

MsWeatherwax · 22/09/2011 12:49

The box for male/female people have mentioned is also a problem, as some people don't fit into either. There should be a box to tick for 'other'. I think my opinion on 'Ms' may be clear from my username :D

I think Master/Mr was for child/adult, not unmarried/married.

In Spain (and I believe France, and Germany) the Miss/Mrs equivalent is not for unmarried/married but for child/adult.

Everything Trills said.

Mrs and Miss are both de facto and de jure sexist titles because they exist purely to show a woman's relationship with a man.

Choose it if you want, but you can't pretend it isn't sexist.
