when you engage with the trolls

. . . is it a personal thing (actually engaging emotionally) or are you communicating with a wider, more silent audience or are there other motivations?

I can't work out why more people don't ignore them, but every now and then the exchanges are unintentionally funny or interesting - although mostly it gets very dull very quickly. Wondering what's in it for them too.

I have decided I'm going to use this debacle to summon my bravery, delurk, and attempt to become an actual contributor. I don't like to see this place derailed. Into the breach an' all that, innit. Grin

Beachcomber · 06/09/2011 11:12

If I were of a suspicious nature, which I am not, I might wonder if there is a sort of poster who would PM a troll and encourage him.

I haven't consulted the forum rules on PMing trolls.

Welcome Spartacus sister CotesduRhone Smile.

ShirleyKnot · 06/09/2011 11:14

I think some of it might be do with the fact that misogynists inherently believe women to be stupid, as well as all the other lovely things they believe, and so they think that veiled threats and posting in a careful manner in order to not get deleted/banned makes them clever in some way.

When in fact it just means that those posts sit there - like a sickening blot of shite - showing those posters up for what they truly are and what they truly believe.

Sterling work there SGM.

CotesduRhone · 06/09/2011 11:16

Ta Beachcomber! I am sitting here filing my vagina dentata, in preparation for battle. Wink

It takes a very special type of mind to imagine that this derailment is fun though.

Great, UMS, I shall go check. It will be like a wonderful conversation I had with my mum about the best shoes to wear while rioting. She is a very wise woman.

DH's Crackberry broke yesterday for no reason whatsoever, he has not been a happy bunny. He gets a new one today (part of his contract) but he lost all of his 100+ numbers. Your DD1 might be better off with the Iphone3 so long as she is not keen on rioting.

CotesduRhone · 06/09/2011 11:29

True Blood! I will see you there. With a Brew in hand.

Beachcomber · 06/09/2011 11:29

There you go Cotes, your first thread in feminism - vaginal dentata.

How have we been managing up until now without you!

SGM - you rock.

"Anti-feminism is a form of misogyny."

No it isn't. I know plenty of men and women who don't agree with feminism. They do not hate women. If you said misogyny often takes the form of anti-feminism you'd be correct.

CotesduRhone · 06/09/2011 11:32

I will gather my thoughts, and think of the best way of approaching Massive Spiny Vagina Fear And Horror. Grin

I favoured pigeons on the riot-organising side. At least after my flying monkeys were quarantined.

sunshineandbooks · 06/09/2011 11:32

Definitely go for the iphone. Blackberrys are useless and they all have the same problem - the central menu button always stops working at some point (usually way before the end of your contract). Also, it's really hard to email/text with those piddly little keys and touchscreen is way better for that.

If you're looking for a cheaper alternative on contract. Try the nokia N8. Very much like an iphone in appearance and feel. Obviously not quite as good but more than adequate for a teen. I'm using one right now (chosen because of it's fab integrated 12MP camera with flash) and I love it. I don't work for nokia, honestly.

yy, the central button always stops working.

I just got a Galaxy Tocco which is quite good. But, but, but it was pink and I did ask for it in black but only realised when I got home and I really couldn't be arsed changing it.
