when you engage with the trolls

. . . is it a personal thing (actually engaging emotionally) or are you communicating with a wider, more silent audience or are there other motivations?

I can't work out why more people don't ignore them, but every now and then the exchanges are unintentionally funny or interesting - although mostly it gets very dull very quickly. Wondering what's in it for them too.

Edd that's rubbish

Plenty of trolls on MN in it's history and they feed on emotion: whether on feminsit threads, bereavement threads, advicating people with disabled kids are placed in workhouses....

They don;t need to be overt, it's what reward they get that makes them a troll. Usually combined with some lies adn false story laying but the link always seems to be raising an emotional reaction- positive or negative.

'from the 3rd link ; When non-privileged groups form our own spaces to talk about our issues, whether or not we welcome participation from privileged groups or not, there is always a backlash from someone who feels that their privileged opinion is not being properly respected. '

That's a good quote. I do wonder if the creation of areas in part works against that- not just in feminism I promise- in that all discussions on related topics end up here, or likewise in SN as the aplce I formed my observations- would it help if feminism were to be given 'safe' status as SN was, so you ahve to tick a box if you wish to see it? It's not all positive- I know some people miss us as a result and we have to gently direct them- but it does give some emasure of troll safety now and has moved the majority to AIBU.

Well I don't do that, so i'm not a troll

Call me a troll all you like, it only proves yourself wrong

LeBOF · 05/09/2011 14:56

Lenin (or anyone really?)- can you start a sort of petition from regulars here to put to MNHQ? I feel a thread will just get derailed. What we need is something that demonstrates the majority of genuine regs want this section made safer.

I think we should try again, Len. Maybe report this thread and point it out?

Beachcomber · 05/09/2011 15:01

BobBanana - I am reporting your pathetic post with its personal attack on me. It is not the first time you have had a go at me. I've had enough of your nasty posts.

If we were all sitting around pub table chatting having a laugh and someone rocks up in an adversarial manner telling us to shut up, our conversation is irrelevant, talking over us, whining they're not being listened to and stamping their feet about not being one of those rude barger-inners, what would we do?

I must hold my hands up to prejudices against certain biscuits

I know it is anti-social and really not pc

But I just hate them Lemon Puffs...they are not really biscuits, they are full of air and shit

and don't get me started on the abomination that is Tunnocks Wafers

ColdTruth · 05/09/2011 15:04

Hide poster option would certainly be funny, a double edged sword.

Bob I have been here longer than almost anyone (11 years now) so frankly if that's the road you want to go down, bye....

However trolls do damage. They are not the same as dissenting opion but there is no harm in having safe threads and debate threads. In fact it's my personal opinion that defining them as such works wonders.

And Bob you ask safety from what: well I have already specidied my parallel as with the Sn boards and yes it helped. We have a section where we can come on and chat about theories / experiences without some arse jumping in and saying but ASD doesn;t exist / you're all just ripping off my taxes / Bettelheim was right..... yet those threads can still be satrted within chat or AIBU and the questions asked.

I can imagine as many feminist issues that would apply to for certain; espeically when you consider rape and abuse in this context.
