Just catching up on the new series, when I noticed The (gorgeous) Doctor had to ask Rory for permission to hug Amy.

A bit of a WTF moment.

Anyone know how this came about? Or thoughts on this?

I thought the idea behind Alex Kingston's performance was that the young River Song is still just a teenager in Time Lord years, and a teenager who hasn't had positive influences in her life at that - hence why she is superficial and reckless and not a well-rounded character yet. Presumably the River Song we know is the person that she becomes under the influence of the Doctor.

TrillianAstra · 29/08/2011 16:07

I think in previous episodes Rory was insecure/unhappy about Amy's relationship with theDr, so he's making sure Rory is aware of their relationship and including him in it by giving him the power to decline his request to hug her.

And it's very, very clear that Amy wouldn't stand for any nonsense about actually needing permission. It's not meant to be taken seriously.

What Bibi and edam said.

CRIKRI · 29/08/2011 16:09

Okies, I didn't know Mel the BFF had made an appearance before (and my Dr Who Ubernerd DH hadn't recalled that either! :) ) so okay, I'm not keeping up/down/back/around with the plot!

CRIKRI · 29/08/2011 16:11

Ah, but how did Melody Pond / River Song get to be a time lord, or at least get all those lives/regenerations? Confused Her parents were just normal earthlings, right?

LRDTheFeministDragon · 29/08/2011 16:13

I get that she was a baddie. I just think she was a shit baddie.

CRI - she''s the child of the Tardis. I think the implication is that Rory and Amy do the deed while inside the Tardis so she gets timelord DNA spliced into the human stuff.

TrillianAstra · 29/08/2011 16:14

She was conceived inside the Tardis, yep.

jeee · 29/08/2011 16:16

Don't care about the permission for hugs (that made sense in context) - rather more concerned about her obsession with clothes size, weight, breast size, outfits.... River Song was rather more than an image-obsessed WAG in earlier episodes

mumatron · 29/08/2011 16:18

I just came on to post exactly what garlicnutter did.

garlicnutter · 29/08/2011 16:23

:) mumatron! Some people just don't get time travel, do they??!

CRIKRI · 29/08/2011 16:29

Yes, I'd heard it was down to being conceived inside the Tardis, but I still think that excuse is pretty darned lame! It also kind of makes the parentage a bit messy - like the result of some strange menage a trois. Ick!

(thinking about other super powers one might gain by virtue of the location of one's conception) Grin

cornsilksi · 29/08/2011 16:55

the doctor is always concerned about how he looks when he regenerates and mentions teeth/hair etc-

Almost as pathetic as being convinced bow ties are 'cool' Grin

I don't think Time Lords are known for their subtle elegance ...

I thought last night's episode was a bit crap. Like they were desperately rushing to tie off that storyline so they could get on with something else.

Was also a bit Hmm @ all the shopping / weighing self stuff.

It all felt very disjointed and not up to usual standard.

OTOH loving torchwood and the fact that Jack's gayness has always been just how it is rather than a plot device or oddness IYSWIM. Very good. Having said that, whoever writes torchwood poss has a crush on JB? He has always been portrayed as irresistably attractive and now someone has gone to the lengths of shaping the politics and everything and making something to stop everyone dying just to do whatever it is they want to do to Jack? Or is JB writing it these days Grin

PMSL @ "a bit too gay"

Isn't Jack bi-sexual though, come to think of it? Or just an outrageous flirt?

Oh yes Omnisexual that's it Grin

I did think that the last episode was an Ode to John Barrowman. I gave a round of applause when the Barrowman Bottom danced across the screen Grin

I quite fancy JB, but ... he's become far more manipulative in his personal relations. He's starting to remind me of the alpha-male "Loser" who makes so many Mumsnetters unhappy.

garlicnutter · 29/08/2011 17:47

Umm, sorry, the Harkness character has! I know fuck all about JB the actor Blush

Now if JB actually were captain jack that would be quite something!

IRL JB is happily married (AFAIK) and teh hardest working man on telly and I wish him a lot of luck, he works for it.

He is a bit too shiny for my tastes though.

I quite like the fact that we are learning more about jack's past and that he has this dark side to him that has always been hinted at

I don't know how the current doc is supposed to be handsome. "Hot"? Come off it.

garlicnutter · 29/08/2011 18:10

Takes all sorts, SQ Grin

I could defineitely enjoy a long weekend with River Song, Felix out of Torchwood and Jack Harkness.

Actually, considering that two of them are unlimited by time or space, it could be a very very long weekend!
