interesting that the eco advice is to turn the water off whilst you wield the razor, rather than not shave them at all... Grin

'I don't recognise what you're talking about.'

Then you should look into it more. Start by reading the Guardian's article on the Beckham's family.

But even if you don't look into it, you will find out soon enough when the 'sustainability' messages start to affect you.

claig · 26/08/2011 22:34

'it is still clear that we are producing more people than we can currently support.'

that is what Kissinger, the elites and their greens tell you. Don't believe everything you are told. Remember the '45 minute dossier', often termed 'the dodgy dossier'. Apparently most of the MPs believed that, even though lots of ordinary folk never did.

Theala · 26/08/2011 22:39

Ok, can you back away from the conspiracy theory bullshit for long enough to actually try to construct a coherent sentence? Or should we all just don our tinfoil hats now? Ribbit.

claig · 26/08/2011 22:43

Theala, it sounds like you are a prime candidate to believe the latest message

'How women waste 50 BILLION litres of water a year shaving their legs in the shower'

It's bullshit alright, but you lap it up.

LRDTheFeministDragon · 26/08/2011 22:50

DH and I must be saving the planet single-handedly then; I'm hairy and he has a beard. Nice. Grin

Theala · 26/08/2011 23:13

You have yet to mention one actual fact or substantiated claim in your post, claig, rather than just spouting bullshit rhetoric or c&ping from the DM. Come back when you can actually construct a coherent argument, yeah?

Dworkin · 26/08/2011 23:15

But Theala the message will never be that men and women do the same housework. It's much better to put out the alarming 'statistic' that 50billion litres of water are wasted on women shaving their legs. That message lets men of the hook; I ask you how many men do you know who shave in the shower?

claig · 26/08/2011 23:18

I mentioned lots of facts. I think it would behoove you to try working on understanding a coherent argument, no?

Dworkin · 26/08/2011 23:20

news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/magazine/5004954.stm

more than 3.5 billion litres per day are lost through leaking pipes says OFWAT, according to the article above.

Again I will ask the question: why shave your legs?

claig · 26/08/2011 23:23

Blimey, per day. What an absolute farce to try to promulgate these informational messages to soften the public up for even more restrictions and price increases.

Theala · 26/08/2011 23:31

I don't actually know any men that shave in the shower, dworkin. Most men I know use electric razors; the few that don't fill up the sink and shave from that.

I refuse to give up on the idea that men and women will not do the same housework. As a second-generation feminist, I can assure you that my father does/did as much housework as my mother, and that my partner does as much housework as me. I reiterate, it's the message about the division of housework that needs to change, not the ecological message.

Theala · 26/08/2011 23:40

claig, I have just had a look through all your posts on this thread. Aside from some ranting about a family of celebrities, I have yet to see anything even remotely connected to reality. D- : must try harder.

claig · 26/08/2011 23:48

Is water leakage from pipes, not reality? Yes, you must try harder.

claig · 26/08/2011 23:50

I also said that

'How women waste 50 BILLION litres of water a year shaving their legs in the shower'

is not reality.

Just because you believe it is so, doesn't make it true. You probably believed the 'dodgy dossier' too, but we subsequently found out that it was not true, as many of us suspected all along.

Theala · 27/08/2011 00:06

I actually have no idea what you're talking about with your 'dodgy dossier'. Care to explain?

I also have no strongly-held beliefs about the exact amount of water that women are wasting due to letting water run in their shower needlessly.

I still don't see anything anti-women in the suggestion that one should turn off the taps when shaving one's legs. Similarly, I don't find anything anti-women in the suggestion that one should turn off the taps when washing one's teeth.

I'm getting the creepy feeling that you think that any suggestion of a criticsm of something that a lot of women do, is a criticism against all women everywhere.

claig · 27/08/2011 00:18

You need to do some 'reality' googling if you don't know what the 'dodgy dossier' is. You need to fill those gaps.

I don't think the 'criticism' is a criticism of all women, because I know that the 'criticism' is baloney, intended to influence people like you. I get the creepy feeling that you have fallen for it and believe in the 50 billion litre hoax.

Theala · 27/08/2011 00:35

OK, so. Googling reveals that the "dodgy dossier" is an anglophone term relating to your dupification vis-à-vis the Iraq war. As a non-anglophone, and a resident of a country that did not support the Iraq war, the only thing I can possibly say in this regard is "...!"

I still don't see what this has to do with people turning off the tap when they shave, or not. Not everything is related. You got suckered; doesn't mean that everyone will.

claig · 27/08/2011 00:43

I never believed in the 'dodgy dossier', just as I don't believe in the 50 billion litre tale.

There was a reason that the 'dodgy dossier' was produced. It was political and intended to influence the public and MPs. There is also a reason for the 50 billion litre message.

I think millions are not suckered by the 50 billion litre message. You only have to read the wise comments from Daily Mail readers of that article to realise that.

LilBB · 27/08/2011 09:32

Just to be clear I know people waste water by not filling the dishwasher/washing machine on half full. My point was that at least shaving legs applies mostly to women whereas anyone could put on a washing machine but society still attributes that as a task to women. Look at all cleaning adverts.

I know it's really dumb but I can never get my head round how we waste water.

Onemorning · 27/08/2011 10:16

What strikes me about this kind of story, aside from the fact women's habits are targeted (women - those pesky, wasteful women!) is that it totally ignores the huge amounts of water used in industrial production. For example, producing beer.

www.triplepundit.com/2010/09/how-much-water-did-it-take-to-make-that-pint-of-beer/

It takes roughly 5L of water to brew 1L of beer. That doesn't even begin to cover the amount used to grow crops and so on. I think it's fair to say that the majority of beer drinkers (not all - I'm partial to the odd pint myself) are men. So why not target male beer drinkers, if they really want to make an impact on water usage?

It still blows my mind that we use potable water to flush the loo, when other countries are crying out for clean drinking water. We really are fortunate.

I can't help but feel that reducing over-use of water to 'don't shave your legs so much, ladies' is at best simplistic and naive, and at worst wilfully ignoring the amount of water wasted elsewhere. I am also a bit Hmm about the stats.

TheCrackFox · 27/08/2011 12:02

I live in Scotland, frankly I am doing them a favour! Really, the whole wasting water thing doesn't apply to Scotland. We have had about 3 sunny days this year so far.

rosy71 · 27/08/2011 17:26

I don't actually know any men that shave in the shower, dworkin. Most men I know use electric razors; the few that don't fill up the sink and shave from that.

Dp shaves in the shower and spends twice as long in there as I do....
