Feminism: Sex and gender discussions

You don't have to be feminist to post here, but it helps...

I've noticed that whenever a 'non-feminist' view is brought up, there are occasionally some posts along the lines of 'this is a feminist board, why come here if you aren't...', etc.

Genuine question - is this a feminist board, or a board about feminism? Obviously the majority of posters are feminist, but I'm not sure whether that is because feminists (surprise surprise) like discussing feminism, or because it is seen as a feminist 'safe haven'?

I like anarchafeminist. I used to know a couple of anarchists. I'm not sure I'd want to be like them though Hmm

So using utterly correct logic, this means that all radical feminists on these boards are like tank girl? Cool.

SardineQueen · 29/08/2011 13:06

Problem with tanks is they don't really tie in with my nicey greeny ideas. As much as I like large powerful vehicles.

Can you get them with solar panels?

ProfessionallyOffendedGoblin · 29/08/2011 13:07

'Anyway, I think the term 'in-fighting' is daft. We're not a unified group. There is no 'in'. You can call yourself whatever you like and there are posters here who I may think are nutty as fruitcake when they call themselves feminists, but there we are, that's what makes them happy. But terms like 'in-fighting' suggest we really should get our ranks in order and take responsibility as a group that there's no disagreement. How boring and pointless would that be?'

Did I get the wrong end of the stick then, because I got the impression that dittany felt more annoyed about the disagreements with LeninGrad because they are both feminists?
I do think that disagreements spark very good debates.

I think that sounds like socialist feminism. But there are always going to be overlaps. Anarcho-feminism sounds pretty cool- but I don't like camping Grin

LRDTheFeministDragon · 29/08/2011 13:11

POG, I doubt you got the wrong end of the stick, but it's possible you didn't notice I don't always agree with Dittany, and wasn't doing so here?

SGM - excellent! I think 'I question your intelligence and empathy skills' could be a great standard response on those threads.

DontCallMeFrothyDragon · 29/08/2011 13:12

I'm still confused as to what type of feminist I am. Can I just have my own strand? Grin

LRDTheFeministDragon · 29/08/2011 13:18

FrothyDragon Feminism. I like it. I imagine you and I have similar views on spikes and claws, and we view the radish with scorn for it is not Raw Meat!

I view radishes with scorn just because they're 'orrible. And remind me of rhubarb. Which are equally horrible... Wink

ProfessionallyOffendedGoblin · 29/08/2011 13:25

LRD, I just didn't want you to think that I was advocating some sort of homogeneous mess with everything dumbed down in order to have a united approach. Or advocating anything really, I tend to ask questions because I'm interested rather than because I'm telling anyone what I think. Even if it comes across wrong on many occasions. Smile

jugglingwiththreeshoes · 29/08/2011 13:26

If I'm having my own strand too DCMFD I think I might be a pragmatic feminist

  • That is I can see there's a lot wrong with the way things are for women, but I'm also trying to enjoy my life and make it as good as I can for my children too. I guess partly I don't feel I can define my life in terms of fighting anything.
Also I'd agree there are lots of other things which need changing in this world too. Anyone join me in this branch of the sisterhood ?!
LRDTheFeministDragon · 29/08/2011 13:33

POG - no, didn't come across wrong at all! Smile It's just my comments are of the annoying 'now, everyone, play nice' variety atm, which makes it hard to see why I am bothering to post.

Except to say I do like radishes, delicious crunchy things that they are. Rhubarb is nice too, cooked with crystallized ginger and cold with yoghurt. Yum!

SGM -yes, but using that phrase, I will always think of what in all likelihood you really said. Happy thoughts.

Rhubarb always reminds me of the 'orrible rhubabr crumble my school used to serve. Was the only time I ever declined desert. Grin

Does it come out a bit dry roasted?

UMS - mmm, that sounds nice! Will try.

Dontcall - bleugh, I'm with you on crumble. Crumble in general is revolting. Bless my mum, she's a good cook in general but her crumble was like eating plaster dust.

DontCallMeFrothyDragon · 29/08/2011 13:54

Haha, ahhh, my apple crumble was a classic. No one told me I had to cook the apples before putting them in the crumble. Took one apple-less crumble home, much to my mother's amusement.

Still haven't lived it down. Blush

skrumle · 29/08/2011 13:56

i LOVE crumble! we used to eat rhubarb raw, dipping it into sugar as we went. i don't normally make rhubarb crumble, prefer apple.

and vaguely back on topic is it really bad that i just clicked on a "most active" topic, was taken to the doghouse (which i have never visited before) and nearly snorted tea out my nose at the discussion going on over there about how to make people feel unwelcome??? deja vuuuuuuuu...

AliceWyrld · 29/08/2011 14:11

skrumle - that doghouse thread is the funniest thing I have seen given the context here Grin

I've come late the party and don't want to stoke the flames, but also don't want to not have a voice. But HerBex and Ayerobot said what I would.
