So said Huw Edwards on yesterday's wedding commentary. How depressing Sad

I wanted to be a punk rockstar. Later a scientist. Then Prime Minister. I am none of these. Sad

stripeywoollenhat · 30/04/2011 15:05

i had a phase of wanting to be john travolta - fortunately, many of our childhood wishes do not come to pass....

dd is 2, so hasn't yet grasped the idea of growing up, never mind having a career: we will cross the princess bridge when we come to it. when the time comes, i will try to get across the notion, in the context of actual monarchy that being a princess has a lot in common with being a brood mare, but with additional social hassle.

DD1 wants to sell sweets at the cinema.

DD2's ambition is to open a shop selling moles - it will be called 'Mole Market'.

Neither of them showed any interest in watching the Royal Wedding, and our TV stayed firmly off yesterday.

Himalaya · 30/04/2011 16:02

I wanted to sell strawberries and champagne from a mobile van.

I expect he was wittering on to fill the time though.

DioneTheDiabolist · 30/04/2011 16:06

I wanted to e a princess so I could have servants. As I grew older I wanted to be Queen of the World, I still do and accept that in order to be Queen of the World I may have to be a princess first.

It's not sexist, it's a sign of realism in my dreams of being ultimate ruler, which is a bit feminist but more Dionist.

InmaculadaConcepcion · 30/04/2011 16:27

I wanted to be an actress or a journalist.

DD is only 15 months, so it's a bit early for her to state a preference. But her tower building skills suggest architect.

PiaThreeTimes · 30/04/2011 16:39

I certainly did NOT want to be a Princess - yuck!

From a very early age, I wanted to be a record producer (when I wasn't performing surgery in my mobile vet practice), live in an exotic country and be best friends with Janet Jackson.

None of these things has happened. I blame my A' level options!

I find Huw's comment offensive, actually. What a load of tripe.

Continuum · 30/04/2011 17:11

Fuck that!

I don't recall ever wanting to be a princess, I pretended I was one, but not the kind proscribed by Disney and lots of money equating it with pink and glitter. But I also pretended I was lots of other things too. The earliest thing I recall wanting to be was a fighter pilot, but my mum told me women weren't allowed...

CoteDAzur · 30/04/2011 17:19

Many little girls (~ 3-4) do, though. And many little boys dream of becoming firefighters and policemen.

That doesn't mean older girls or young women dream of becoming princesses.

I dreamt of being a witch Grin

DD wanted to watch the wedding. I asked her if she wanted to be a princess when she was older. she said "no. I don't want to get married because then you have to have babies. I just want to get a rich job"

She is 6. It was a very proud moment for me.

BeakerTheMuppetMuppet · 30/04/2011 17:47

I had aspirations of owning an Old English Sheepdog and growing flowers to sell on the market.

I would never own a dog but do tend our allotment

I asked DD - almost 4 yrs old, what she'd like to be when she's a grown up. Yesterday she wanted to be a robin, today she wants to be a mermaid.

Hope she doesn't get the costumes muddled up

kickingking · 30/04/2011 17:53

I did not want to be a Princess as a little girl. As a teen, I was vehemently anti-Princess. I just did not 'get' romantic films, songs, etc.

Now, age 33, I finally get it. Now I wouldn't mind being a bit of a princess... Wink

HandDivedScallopsrgreat · 30/04/2011 18:09

Loving these dreams!
I wanted to own a sweet shop, for obvious reasons and be a pixie Confused - probably something to do with being able to fly (a bit like Peter Pan). Needless to say I am neither of those things.

BeakerTheMuppetMuppet · 30/04/2011 18:11

~dreams of being a pixie who can fly to sweet shops~

mumwithdice · 03/05/2011 17:08

I wanted to be a princess, but I wanted to be one that fought dragons and went on quests as well as waltzing with the prince.

ElephantsAndMiasmas · 03/05/2011 17:18

I never wanted to be a princess, it struck me that Queen of All the Fairies was a far far better job. Now I want to be Empress of the Universe - sorry to pull rank on you there, Dione.

I also wanted to be a Russian ballerina, mainly for the tutus and the legwarmers (it was the eighties, ok?) and simultaneously a gardener and a witch. This morphed into my later ambition of wise woman by day, actress by night. Still quite fancy this option actually.

queenbathsheba · 03/05/2011 18:36

According to my mother I wanted to be a spinster and breed cats in the country Hmm but never a princess.

AmandaCooper · 03/05/2011 18:40

I wanted to be a long distance lorry driver, like long distance Clara from Pigeon Street. I don't think I'm made of stern enough stuff to be a princess.

practicallyimperfect · 03/05/2011 18:45

I wanted to dress as a princess every fancy dress day, but my mum would always make me something interesting (clown, mickey mouse, chimney sweep, skeleton)

The more she denied it me, the more I wanted it.

I also wanted to be an archaeologist and the first female archbishop of canterbury!

Thomas1969 · 03/05/2011 18:45

If any daughter of mine said she wanted to be a princess when she grew up I wouldn't talk to her again. I think Huw Edwards meant when 'he' was a little boy he dreamt of being a princess. Ah, sweet!

bucaneve · 03/05/2011 20:51

I wanted to be a fairy as a child, live in a tree-house and have magical powers. I never wanted to be a princess as it sounded boring and like I'd have to be good all the time and never have adventures. Having said that, I did still want beautiful fairy dresses.

What's a blood stock agent, is it something to do with horse breeding?

quirrelquarrel · 05/05/2011 08:55

The "Baby Beauty Queens" docu will make you sick- the pageant winner prancing around in her sash and saying "it's every girl's dream to own one of these"...hmm, leave me out of it!

At five I wanted to be a farmer. I was reading Enid Blyton for the first time and had my room decorated like the inside of a farmhouse...my mum painted a farmyard view on the wall and stuck pretend beams everywhere and painted uncovered bricks on the wall...shortly after that I wanted to be a writer and that didn't change. I was always certain that that was what I wanted to be.
