So said Huw Edwards on yesterday's wedding commentary. How depressing Sad

OP posts:
Bumply · 30/04/2011 14:00

And utterly untrue. I was a tomboy and it certainly wasn't my idea of fun.

fruitshootsandheaves · 30/04/2011 14:02

I didn't want the princess bit, just the rich bit!

slovenlydotcom · 30/04/2011 14:10

I dreamt of being a vet

hocuspontas · 30/04/2011 14:15

I dreamt of being a scientist and was patted on the head. Nothing's changed in 50 years. I agree - depressing.

Hardandsleazy · 30/04/2011 14:18

I wanted to be the fat controller-

AnnieLobeseder · 30/04/2011 14:21

Well, despite all my efforts to the contrary, my DDs love all things pink and glittery and DD1 (5) does want to be princesses when she grows up. She was dressed as a princess all day yesterday. DD2 (3) wanted to be prince Charming!

DD1 also wants to be an astronaut and a doctor. So at least she's keeping her options open.

But, I will agree that there were hideous amounts of sexist bile spilled yesterday. It seems a royal wedding brings out the medieval sexist in everyone.

SybilBeddows · 30/04/2011 14:22

I wanted to be a princess for about a week, when Andy and Fergie got married, but not for as long as I wanted to be a biochemist, a naval officer and a sociologist.

LynetteScavo · 30/04/2011 14:23

DD's 5, and she certainly doesn't.

I cried yesterday because I know my daughter will never want to have a big frilly wedding.

WillieWaggledagger · 30/04/2011 14:23

i dreamed of being a princess, but I also dreamed of being an inventor, a scientist, a doctor and the owner of dressage stables with equal if not more longing

SybilBeddows · 30/04/2011 14:25

I just asked dd (5) and she said artist or doctor and she has never dreamed of being a princess.

SybilBeddows · 30/04/2011 14:26

LOL @ Willie 'owner of dressage stables'. There was a girl in my class who said with absolute certainty for years 'blood stock agent'. And she is.

goodegg · 30/04/2011 14:27

I wanted to be a princess when I was little.

Beautiful dresses, sparkly jewels, handsome prince, throne, nice music everywhere, eating anything you like, people being really respectful and bringing you anything you desire.

Nowadays I don't think I would like it - your life is no longer your own, you are a tool for the purposes of maintaining a patriarchal and anti-progressive institution, you can't socialise how you want, if you're unhappy I suspect you aren't cared for but have people trying to cover you up.

Little girls have a romanticised view that being a princess brings freedom to have and do whatever they want IMO. My view was strongly coloured by fairy stories, not Disney.

In real life, I think princesses are about the least free people there are Sad I like KM as much as it's possible to like someone I've only seen on telly, and I hope she can be happy and lead a fulfilling life.

nickelbabe · 30/04/2011 14:28

I never did.
I was a "tomboy" too and i hated most girly things.

goodegg · 30/04/2011 14:30

Oh actually, caveat: I didn't want to marry a prince and be transformed into a princess, just be one in my own right Grin

wook · 30/04/2011 14:33

I wanted to be a cowgirl!
dd seems to want to be a diva rather than a princess so far.
Being a princess- BORING!

trice · 30/04/2011 14:37

I wanted to be batman. Princesses are polite and silent and have to spend all their time in towers either sleeping or having their hair used as a ladder.

Bumperlicioso · 30/04/2011 14:39

Just asked dd1 who wants to be Diego, or at least an animal rescuer. She doesn't particularly like animals so not sure how that is going to work.

Regreting asking her really as now she won't stop asking 'what do you want to be when you grow up?' and when I eventually got her to accept I am grown up she said 'how did you grow up?'

BlooferLady · 30/04/2011 14:41

I wanted to be a princess, AND a neurosurgeon, AND a novelist Grin.

Always did like to be kept busy.

Must admit though: did shudder at that bit from Huw.

Dd2 wants to be the Lion man off Sky TV. Not someone who works with him, or someone who does a similar job to him she wants to be him.

Dd1 wants to be a rockstar by night and a tennis player by day.

Nither of them have ever expressed any interest in becoming a princess.

LynetteScavo · 30/04/2011 14:44

I really wanted to be a neurosurgeon or a popstar. And own an afghan hound.

SlightlyScrambled · 30/04/2011 14:45

I wanted to be a fireman or a librarian or a witch. Never a princess. Commentators really spout some crap when they are filling time.

I'm trying to figure out what part of being a princess is fun, as opposed to being batman or an astronaut.

I thought about all the protocol involved in yesterday's wedding and it looks like hard work. I think being a princess may not be all what it's cracked up to be.

cherryburton · 30/04/2011 14:45

oh dear. I think I wanted to be one briefly when I was about 6, I had a thing for drawing big 18th century type dresses. Promptly grew out of it and I really dont' get this whole princess bollocks that gets touted about, and grown women wanting to be princesses on their wedding days and all that. It's almost like the infantilisation of grown up women and it makes me feel slightly ill...

clockchangebabes · 30/04/2011 14:46

Obviously been watching to many pampers adverts. I wanted to be a policewoman but was too short, then I wanted to be a vet( and I am).
And anyway she isn't a princess Catherine is a Duchess!

Takver · 30/04/2011 14:55

PMSL at the thought of David Cameron as Batman.

I know dd doesn't want to be a princess - she was discussing it with her friends when I was taking them somewhere a while back, and their considered opinion was that being royal was a bad deal, as your only job opportunity was to be King or Queen - whereas if you were ordinary, you could be all sorts of things.

Actually, come to think of it, I guess it isn't strictly true, as some of the Royals must have jobs?

But I reckon being a princess (at least one of the main royals) is a pretty weird life.
