International Women's Day: how can we make the world more equal?

Hello campers,

As lots of you will already know, Tuesday March 8 is International Women's Day. MNHQ has been working with the EQUALS coalition this year, and they've asked us to ask you to suggest small ways in which you think we could all work to make men and women more equal, whether locally, nationally or globally.

Examples would be: go and support your local woman's football team; write to a television station to ask why women presenters are 20 years younger than their male counterparts; or make a donation to an organisation that supports women in developing countries. (If you're feeling extrovert, you could also consider organising an EQUALS soul train in your area this coming Friday.)

Your contributions might end up on the EQUALS blog.

Thanks,

MNHQ x

HerBeX · 10/03/2011 19:51

Why don't you go and look at the rape threads

Or are you just here to have a ruck

As if we didn't know the answer to that Hmm

HerBeX · 10/03/2011 19:51

dittany hasn't mentioned hate.

Projection

StreetWiseHotMum · 10/03/2011 19:53

oh, so misogyny means love does it.

HerBeX · 10/03/2011 19:55

What is your point about hate?

s/he reminds me of those concern trolls we get sometimes.

I love it when people who spend a lot of their time and energy campaigning against something get told how to do it by people who almost certainly don't.
But they have the pragmatism to know you shouldn't actually do anything or even mention it, see, which is much more useful than actual research and campaigning.

MWR had large contingents of women from different Rape Crisis centres. I wonder if they know they ought to be more pragmatic.

I don't know but perhaps some people could be wary of looking at threads specifically about rape.

Maybe it's important to begin to address some of those issues here too ( where more people could begin thinking about them )?

If the point is to try to get more women to report rape so the scale of the problem could stir police into action, I think it is worth bearing in mind that many women reported attacks in the Warboys (sp?) case and it took the police a painfully long time to connect the dots, and then in the aftermath they appealed to the public for any more women who had been attacked to come forward, leaving a few people scratching their heads and wondering what exactly was going on...

Worth noting too the fate of rape kits in many states in the US -- 'Unprocessed Rape Kits' article here.

To go back to the original point of this thread....

Women whill be equal when the statement "I am not a feminist, but.." is not deemed necessary to be put in front of any statement that contains a feminist sentiment.
