Am completely confused .... see article

I mean it's pretty nonsensical for anyone semi-conscious to say they are'nt a feminist but for HER to say it? And in the same breath as calling for quotas to get more women in boardrooms??

It's just daft. Am actually quite cross ...

I just looked up the definiton of feminist again ... I do this regularly whenever this kind of thing comes up just to reassure myself that it means what I think it means. Anyway, it does indeed mean what I think it means but I notice that quite a few of them use "active" words like "a person who advocates equal rights for women".

I wonder if it's this element that makes some women nervous - that while they believe in feminism and equal rights, they don't feel they are feminists because they aren't particularly political or active in any real sense in the battle of the sexes. I suspect (naively hope?) that very few women in this country genuinely aren't feminists but that most are just going about their day fighting the good fight in general low-key day to day way and (rightly or wrongly) don't see themselves as actively "advocating" equal rights. That's for the "real" feminists who burn bras/hate men/leap on soapboxes etc.

Surely there needs to be clarity before you nail your colours to a mast?

itsalarf · 25/02/2011 22:38

Think that makes sense stillstanding. Now I think about it, many women I know are not overly political, and therefore do not associate feminism with themselves. Had this conversation with a friend the other day. She was genuinely surprised that I maintained she should feel like a feminist, as a woman with female relatives. She felt that naming herself as feminist would impede her free choices if they were seen to be "traditional"

Incidentally when I googled the defn this quote came up ...

"People call me a feminist whenever I express sentiments that differentiate me from a doormat or a prostitute" [Rebecca West]

Always makes me laugh!

Is any woman who represents herself as sexual not a true feminist?

isaidheysugar · 25/02/2011 22:53

Is Kate Middleton a feminist?

scottishmummy · 25/02/2011 22:55

is kate price feminist then?she present self as sexual

hymie · 25/02/2011 22:57

Kate Price is a ridiculous caricature of what cosmetic surgery and systematic self abuse can do to a person.

Kate Middleton has views on Womens rights that escape me.

scottishmummy · 25/02/2011 22:58

represents self as sexual=true feminist?care to elaborate

hymie · 25/02/2011 23:01

Madonna...can she be considered to be a feminist?

She represented the Blonde bombshell early on in her career has she now redeemed herself in the eyes of Feminist?

Personal choices on how a Woman displays her sexuality shouldn't have any bearing on her role as a Feminist.

scottishmummy · 25/02/2011 23:07

why do you get to cherry pick who feminist or not

kate price no according to you
madonna yes according to you

both have careers built on looks and sexuality, both surgically enhanced, both sell brand

neither can sing

hymie · 25/02/2011 23:09

I didn't say either were feminists.

The question was...do you think they are?

isaidheysugar · 25/02/2011 23:11

actually agree feminism is definable to the individual

isaidheysugar · 26/02/2011 00:28

Does it have to involve any element of being supportive towards other women?

isaidheysugar · 26/02/2011 01:01

Or did post-feminism kill that notion off?

I don't actually know what sex positive feminism is.

Thanks.

isaidheysugar · 26/02/2011 01:14

So, seriously, I see that on another feminist thread CR groups are being joked about. Is supportiveness towards other women just seen as silly/sentimental now? Is it more about individualism?
