I'm with you, Annie - it's actually scary how many people out there actually agree with this crap.

aaaaaaaaarrrrrrrrrggggggggggghhhhh

it makes me want to go out onto the street and start bashing every man I see with the DM round the head with a saucepan

of course, I realise this makes me just as bad as them

gah

sethstarkaddersmackerel · 25/01/2011 12:25

I'm with Abs (well let's face it, I have to be or I'd go crazy) - DM comments are not the majority view.

I didn't read the whole of that football thread but from what I saw it seemed to be a bloke from another forum wanting support for his view that the presenters were bang out of order and should be sacked. That was rather cheering.

sakura · 25/01/2011 12:29

not the majority view, no, but why do so many people think like that? Sad

ElephantsAndMiasmas · 25/01/2011 12:32

On a slightly more positive note, this stuff about the sexist comments from the commentators would barely have made the news 10 years ago. I think the idea of being thought badly of merely because of your sex is a tricky one to many men. Because they don't experience it (no they don't, Dominic dear) they can hardly believe it. Was speaking to my dad (not a sexist) about the football thing last night, and even he was coming out with "male officials get the same treatment you know" stuff. Lost no time in pointing out that no-one expects women to be handed flowers and kittens at work, just that they will be judged on their merits, and not on the contents of their pants. The gendered aspect of this seems to be lost on many people.

KangarooCaught · 25/01/2011 12:33

Thanks SGB for that image! How about submitting it the DM comments page?

AliceWorld · 25/01/2011 12:35

It's the Daily Mail and the internet. Its full of this shit. Only read the Daily Mail if you want to get angry. Its the golden rule Grin

I have a theory that general discourse tends to reflect who is in government, so if the Tories are in government people feel more able to express the views they advocate. So we get more of this shit. I don't think it means there are necessarily more people saying this stuff, just it becomes more vocal.

And re evidence-based policy making, it may be that Labour also picked and chose, but they do have a broader spectrum of life experiences to pick from than the Tories. They are exposed to a wider range of influences than the Tories also. So of course they weren't perfect but they are not the same.

knob jockey of the highest order. His mum must be really proud.

NichyNoo · 25/01/2011 12:46

I. Am. Speechless.

Seriously don't know what to say to even begin to address his unbelievable comments. How on earth can people agree with him.

'Women should be forced to wear a suit and tie to work before they can talk about equality'. Surely men should be forced to squeeze a human being out of their anus before commenting on maternity leave.

AliceWorld · 25/01/2011 12:48

Or men should be expected to wear heels and make-up to work...

ElephantsAndMiasmas · 25/01/2011 12:58

:o Nichy. Bloody right.

If it's all about choice how about all employers go to their female employees and say "we'll boost your salary by 10% if you wear a suit and tie to work from now on". Think there might be a 100% uptake for that.

The fact is of course that if women wore a shirt and tie to work they would be branded Insufficiently Feminine, probably called butch and a lesbian as well, ballbreaker of course, and left out of things for being an oddball.

TheCrackFox · 25/01/2011 12:58

How many men have been forced to go on a course to learn how to apply make up by their employer? I am guessing none.

AbsDuCroissant · 25/01/2011 13:00

I agree - whenever DP or friends moan about having to shave their beards, I point out that I would gladly wax/epilate the beard for them.

Shuts them up pretty quickly Grin

Same with heels. Don't whinge about how difficult it is to be a man until you've walked a mile in 3" heels. Or don't whinge about going to gay clubs "as men will hit on me", because that's pretty much what it's like being a woman in a straight club (or it was, last time I went. About 340 years ago. Total losers trying to gratuitously grab your arse/hitting on you when you have no interest).

AbsDuCroissant · 25/01/2011 13:01

Or - they should agree to wear a skirt suit

TheCrackFox · 25/01/2011 13:03

I wonder how long it takes them to do their hair in the morning? DH keeps his vair short and doesn't even own a brush.

HalfCaff · 25/01/2011 13:05

I admit it. I am an obnoxious bigot. When it comes to Tories, I can just dismiss them without listening to their drivel and even tell them to go away! (Thinking of local council candidate now).
Very upsetting to be reminded of the attitudes which exist out there. I work in a very female-dominated service where we all get on remarkably well and cover for each other very effectively when there are childcare/maternity needs. It can be done.

ElephantsAndMiasmas · 25/01/2011 15:28

My friend once told me I was prejudiced against Tories.

Prat.

It's not prejudice, it's an informed disdain.
