nspired by the fairytales thread!

Most of the books I come across for the DDs (1 and 3) have a male lead, or a non-gendered lead which by default of the English language is male IYSWIM.

Any recommendations of books/anthologies of stories with female leads who aren't pretty pretty fairies etc?

Oh I like Helpers

Tis very 70's. Mum goes off to her women's assertiveness group (i imagine) and entrusts her children to a long haired hippy called Mike and they all have a nice time. Particularly like the fact the house is a mess and the kids won't let him throw out their broken toys (projecting)

What a great thread! I can't wait til DD is old enough for her to enjoy books with story lines.

For a slightly older child the Practical Princess is superb.

I also love the Ordinary Princess by MM Kaye when the Princess refuses to marry a boring old prince and runs away to the forest to fend for herself and work as a kitchenmaid.
