Feminism: Sex and gender discussions

So, are you attracted to 'feminist nightmare' blokes? If so, does it annoy or amuse you?

I hope this is ok, I fancied a light-hearted thread for saturday night, and with luck some of you will still be aware to help me ponder.

DH has just introduced me to Ashes to Ashes and obviously (er ... for a MNer ...), I went and searched out the Telly thread on here. I discover that masses of apparently sane women have huge crushes on Gene Hunt, who (in case you don't know), plays a sort of caricature 1970s misogynist/sex pest.

And I sort of know what they mean. Blush

I wondered how many of us who are feminists, do feel attracted to the very 'wrong' men? Is it excusable because it's a fantasy or should we be having strong words with ourselves?

Discuss.

Sakura, I was having a dig at the schedulers who consider the Cbeebies audience to be 'bored housewives' in need of a treat. I have no problem with SAHMs who are happy to do it, but TBH a woman who stays home to do housework when she has no DC is missing out on life - does anyone actually do that any more?

Faaamily · 13/11/2010 08:32

No. Not in RL. DH is a fully paid up member of the 'Good Blokes Who Get The Whole Equal Partnership Thing' Club, happily, but in my late teens and twenties, before I met my DH, I only really went for 'bad boys' (ie. very good looking, usually involved in some way with the criminal justice system Grin). I doubt any of them would have had the foggiest idea what feminism meant. One or two were positively Neanderthal in their approach to women. But then, I was really only looking for a shag and someone with a nice car and cash to take me out, so I wasn't exactly living the Feminist Dream myself back then...

Faaamily · 13/11/2010 08:34

...oh, and Gene Hunt looks like someone's dad. NOT SEXY. If you're really looking for hot misogynistic bastards on TV, I recommend you watch The Wire. Wink

notjustapotforsoup · 13/11/2010 08:47

In real life, no. Or at least not the out and out bad boy types. But on screen, yes sometimes. The characters are written that way, aren't they? Usually given just enough "depth" to give a sympathetic hook.

Faaamily, I was thinking of McNulty when I read this thread. And Stringer. And Don Draper. And Hank Moody.

ForMashGetSmash · 13/11/2010 08:49

I am upset about Elephants vision of Gene...it was the watching of snooker that did it. I can never think of him the same now...

yama · 13/11/2010 09:22

I've never watched Ahses to Ashes so can't comment on Gene Hunt.

I did however like Philip Glenister in Vincent. He played Vincent's ex-wife's new man.

HerBeatitude · 13/11/2010 14:36

I think it depends on what you want a man for OP.

Obviously as a life partner or a long term lover, a mysogynist would be out of the question - how can you have a relationship with someone who at the core of their being, believes you are slightly less than human? How could you have any self-respect at all if you could tolerate that?

But if it's a meaningless shag or several, blimey, my only criteria is Has he got Pecs?

HerBeatitude · 13/11/2010 14:38

Having said that, Sakura's point about people who you don't expect to surprise you in life, being the most likely ones to, gives me pause for thought as there is some truth in that.

nooka · 13/11/2010 18:46

Ah yes, I like a bit of definition too Grin. I did like the wrong side of the tracks boys as a teen (I liked Taps, the Lost Boys and the Outsiders). But then the preppy types were so clean. Then I discovered that all of the Brat Pack were tiny, and felt disillusioned (I was a very tall teen, and height quickly became my no1 criteria).

ElephantsAndMiasmas · 13/11/2010 19:23

I'm such a passion killer - snooker and Dobbin seems to be a fatal combination. :o

LoudRowdyDuck · 14/11/2010 01:24

It is not the best combination, Elephants!

Mind you, I sincerely doubt it's the actor who's attractive, so shall just block your comments from my mind. Grin

Incidentally, someone mentioned George Clooney - now why is he considered attractive? He leaves me totally cold.

those smarmy coffee ads. He had appeal when he handsomely went around saving lives.

Sakura · 14/11/2010 03:25

fair enough SGB, TBH, no, I don't think women just do housework. BUt then again, I don't think they ever did just do that.
I think that was just another misogynistic stereotype of women.

The "dull housewife" stereotype is a little bizzare when you think that many societies would collapse if it wasn't for the unpaid care work and voluntary work that these women do. It's not their fault society regards "excitement" as going to visit a prostitute or a strip club. Obviously many women are just too boring...

LoudRowdyDuck · 14/11/2010 13:12

Hmmm ... just a teeny bit annoying though, wukter. 'If I smile, you, woman, will be charmed.'
