Feminism: Sex and gender discussions

This movie poster is plastered all over my town and it makes my sphincter contract every time I see it

This one

It's annoying me particularly because I have been reading a lot about feminism and films recently. But ugh. Seriously. Doesn;t it just represent everything wrong about the way women are represented in Hollywood?

Tell me it's not just me!

It's not just you Grin

sethstarkaddersmum · 27/09/2010 15:05

yup, completely nauseating.
And I'm sure the misandry crowd will use it as evidence that men are just as oppressed as women blah blah blah.

Yes, aren't men -so- hilarious with their funny little pranks.

Pretty degrading to either sex.

Matsikula · 27/09/2010 15:17

Looks rubbish, but quite apart from the stupid theme, I am annoyed that while all the men get billing on the poster, only one of the women does. Even though there are three women pictured. Presumably they are being paid accordingly.

Tortington · 27/09/2010 15:19

seen it - dont bother

i dont have high standards i think kick ass and iron man II were fucking ace.

i even thought that predators was fantastic - i have no high brow illusions.

this film sucks

ElephantsAndMiasmas · 27/09/2010 15:23

god it sounds like the same old crapola.

As DP often says as we stride out of Blockbuster empty handed, "It's so good to see the voices of white wealthy American man-children being heard for a change"

HollyGoHeavily · 27/09/2010 15:27

It's not just you!

WTF is Salma Hayak doing in a movie which looks quite that braindead....

Saltatrix · 27/09/2010 15:29

Well that's because all the ones named are 'wellknown' actors/actress the other 2 women I have never seen before. Famous names are advertised to gain the movie popularity.

The movie is a joke, about old friends who get together and relive their old antics. And there is a grain of truth grown men do have a habit of acting like kids sometimes especially when they are with old friends.

Saltatrix · 27/09/2010 15:30

Custardo i agree with you Kick Ass was quite literally kick ass.

ElephantsAndMiasmas · 27/09/2010 15:32

So do women actually Saltatrix, but you would never know this because if anyone has made a film about grown women finding it hard to commit to their partners/children, but having fun with their mates instead, I'll eat my hat.

MotherofHobbit · 27/09/2010 15:37

I also saw that and thought Eeergh! Yet another movie where the men behave like irresponsible children and the women are humourless nags.
Not stereotypical at all Hmm

People make movies based on what they think their target audience would enjoy. Obviously this movie is made to appeal to males mainly middle aged and young adults.

I don't know if a director would make a movie based on what you said EAM because would it appeal to their target audience which would be women. Would they go to see it? would be the question, you have things like Sex and the City that did very well commercially.

With movies that get screened in cinemas it is very important that they do well commercially. Smaller movies tend to be more realistic and have more freedom with their creativity.

Saltatrix · 27/09/2010 15:41

Personally I am not a fan of this movie I have seen some bits and it seems a bit weak.

southeastastra · 27/09/2010 15:42

what about that awful julia roberts film runaway bride

ElephantsAndMiasmas · 27/09/2010 15:49

I bet they would. MNers would anyway, and I would (no DC). Things like 9 to 5 or The First Wives Club, SATC, Mamma Mia are all female "buddy movies" that have done really well.

But there is a continuing illusion that "women don't go to the movies" (see this article for instance) which fuels this kind of shit. Hollywood's male producers still imagine that films about men are "for everyone" whilst films about women are "for women".

Bollocks when you think about Tomb Raider, Alien(s), etc etc

Yeah, what's Salma up to? I also think they reduced her boobs in that poster. I swear they're much larger (I'm not a crazy stalker, just crazy jealous of her boobs).

maybe Salma Hayek has trouble getting as many good roles now she's old. She is 44 after all Hmm

RubberDuck · 27/09/2010 16:06

Oh, I saw the trailer for this and it looks absolutely as shit and vile as the poster.

(Oh and Kick Ass was fucking AWESOME Grin - I loved the bit about her asking for a puppy and a bratz doll for her birthday, bwahaha)

Saltatrix · 27/09/2010 16:07

Ok I was curious so I looked up an interview with Salma Hayek as to why she did the movie. Some of the questions are very....very cringe worthy but I think it's because she's a fan of Adam Sandler.
