Feminism: Sex and gender discussions

This movie poster is plastered all over my town and it makes my sphincter contract every time I see it

This one

It's annoying me particularly because I have been reading a lot about feminism and films recently. But ugh. Seriously. Doesn;t it just represent everything wrong about the way women are represented in Hollywood?

Tell me it's not just me!

apparently he made the set a family-friendly working environment, according to that article! Maybe that's the way to attract talent, in Hollywood as in real life!

Saltatrix · 27/09/2010 16:17

Well unless she says otherwise we can only speculate based on nothing :)

I was forced to see this film the other week. We took the boys from DH's boarding house out on an excursion to the cinema and I got assigned to sit through this. What a pile of misogynistic crap. Not to mention a terrible example to be setting to teenage boys.

According to this film everything in life is the fault of wives.

And it wasn't even funny!

ElephantsAndMiasmas · 27/09/2010 17:19

What sort of things are blamed on them, Bue?

Seee, this is why I liked Mama Mia (despite total unwatchability of youth leads), no-one was really to blame, the whole situation was just one of those things that happened. Plus the mother had slept within three men within days and no-one judged. Lovely.

msrisotto · 27/09/2010 19:03

He made a good film Proles? Which one?

ElephantsAndMiasmas · 27/09/2010 19:09

that's exactly what I was wondering MsR, but was too polite to ask.

TheCrackFox · 27/09/2010 19:16

Typical Hollywood crap

1 The men all look like they have been severely beaten with the ugly stick

2 The women are really hot. In real life ugly people marry each other and good looking people stick to their own kind too.

3 The women are nags/shrews etc. Yawn

If Hollywood wasn't so busy being misogynist it could actually make much more money by making films women will enjoy watching.

ElephantsAndMiasmas · 27/09/2010 19:24

I know they're really missing out IMO CrackFox. I loved Persepolis and Waitress etc.

ElephantsandMiasmas - well naturally it's career-driven Salma Hayek's fault that her kids are spoilt and bratty. Because she works too hard, so the whole family have lost their way! And Chris Rock feels emasculated because his wife and MIL believe he isn't a "real man" because he's a SAHD while she goes out to work (yeah right, now there's a likely female attitude). And it's portrayed as disgusting that one of the men is married to an older woman, even though they're the only couple with a good relationship. Really, it isn't just anti-woman, the whole thing is deeply anti-male as well. Anyone who isn't masculine enough or feminine enough is an object of ridicule.

Waitress! Now there is a wonderful American movie. So sad that the filmmaker died, I would have loved to see more from her.
