I've just been watching some Adam Ant on youtube to pass the time, as you do Grin

And I was wondering what others would make of this video...

I have a couple of very dull and obvious observations...

Of coure, no-one really needs an excuse to watch an Adam Ant video Grin but if you did, here it is!

On the subject of leather trousers and pirate shirts, I also had a real thing about John Taylor from Duran Duran (although the less said about their videos the better)... #

And Ian McCulloch from Echo and the Bunnymen.

It's a wonder I got any O-Levels at all.

Isn't it saying that vanity is crap and you should be who you want to be?

Oh sweet lord he was a beauty.
I was 7 or 8 at the time and I remember being not turned on, but certainly switched on by that.
(I do love a fop.)

ISNT · 04/09/2010 21:51

Oooh good post sprogger, agree with all of that.

Also wanted to point out that my response to Dittany's post about disco sounded deeply sarcastic, but it was sincere Smile

PMSL at ISNT
"You just wouldn't get a video like this now would you? Or would you? I would love to know if you do."

BelleDameSansMerci · 04/09/2010 21:52

I think I'll join you ISNT... It's very alluring. And reminds me of 6th Form parties (when I was in the 4th Form) and all sorts of associated awakenings Wink

That video represents almost the end of an era, I think. It is positively elegiac.

ISNT · 04/09/2010 21:58

Oh blimey Dittany thank you for that link...

Ahem.

I just asked DH if it (Kings of the wild frontier - Dittany's link) all looked rather gay or just very 80s. He said just 80s and anyway their makeup is like warpaint so it's actually all pretty masculine. I asked if that was true even though Adam is only wearing a small waistcoat on his top half and he said yes.

So something has changed that's for sure. you'd never get a male star dressing like that now and large rugby player types saying "oh yes that's a very masculine look, there's no way he's gay" IYSWIM.

I LOVED this video. I was in high school or college at the time. Too tired to think too deeply about the meaning (have been up 5 nights with ill ds2) but thanks for the reminder of fab Adam Ant.

Sprogger I grew up in a hick town too - I loved all that 80s basically gay electropop (I was a couple of years too young for the new romantic scene) and kept it kind of quiet. Gay was bad. One day, one of the boys in my year thrust a cassette of Erasure into my hand and said 'listen to this' and we were partners in crime after that.
Sorry, I was reminded of it by the 'Boy George is straight' line - I heard exactly the same.

ISNT · 04/09/2010 21:59

I once sold a copy of Socialist Worker to one of The Proclaimers

I remember that people were just utterly confused by boy george... Remember that cup of tea business, like it was OK for him to be gay as long as he didn't have yikes SEX...

Erasure were fab, remember that blokes trouers which were normal leather trousers from the front and at the back had the bum cut out! I was like this Shock when I saw that.... Also communards were fab... bronski beat, remember smalltown boy? that is one of the saddest videos.

I think we need to spearhead a gender-bending, equal ops, anti-sexist, disco/80's/cheerful and excellent revival scene Grin

Erasure/Communards/New Order/PSB. I thought I was alone in my teeny town until that boy shared his C90 with me.
(I also loved Deacon Blue and ended up living next door to the drummer, that was weird but irrelevant to this thread!)

UnePrune · 04/09/2010 22:11

We didn't have loggers/Queen, our demographic was more binmen/Whitesnake. (I left, quickly Grin)

UnePrune · 04/09/2010 22:12

Actually, watching Brokeback Mountain, the end of the film where his daughter visits him in his trailer home...that was very spot on.
