I wanted to take a moment to plug one of my favourite charities - the fistula foundation

Smile

I know that lots of people haven't heard of them - they do vital work operating on women who have fistulas as a result of childbirth or sexual violence, in Africa and elsewhere.

So what's your favourite charity/organisation? Come and tell me all about it Smile

Smile Faneuse, nice to "see" you, thank you for your post!

Scot-PEP. Or is that too controversial?

ISNT · 31/08/2010 21:46

Of course not Smile

If it helps women somewhere, in it goes. It's up to MNers whether they want to actually support the charity themselves or not. I think it would be miserable if we all had to start arguing about which charities "qualified".

Unashamed plug from me for some of the organisations I'm involved/have been involved with:

The Halo Trust - www.halotrust.org/home/index.aspx
I know its not a women's charity, per se, but women are hugely affected as the foragers, water carriers and wood collectors in many countries by the issue of landmines. In particular, the work they are doing in Jaffna (Sri Lanka) is inspirational.

The UN Refugee Agency - www.unhcr.org/cgi-bin/texis/vtx/home
I'm working on a project with them on the Thai-Burmese border aiding refugees, mainly women and children, from one of the most silenced and oppressed countries in the world

After the Wave -
www.afterthewave.org/
Local organisation helping tsunami-affected children in Thailand

Whole Planet Foundation -
www.wholeplanetfoundation.org/
Fabulous micro-credit organisation, which, alongside awesome commercial ventures such as the Grameen Bank www.grameen-info.org/ are transforming the lives of the rural poor, including women. I heart micro-credit - I've seen first hand the immense difference it can make in small communities and families.

The PDA "Cabbages and Condoms" projects. Cabbages and Condoms is a Bangkok restaurant which is non-profit making, donating profits to the PDA projects on HIV/AIDS in Thailand. Including many projects helping women affected by HIV/AIDS. Also serves amazing food - if you are ever in Bangkok, go along and enjoy an amazing meal which directly benefits those in need - a win win! Apart from that, the PDA works in micro-credit, family planning etc:

Friends of Bangladesh - a really small charity which fundraises largely amongst the British Bangladeshi community to support some excellent projects in Bangladesh, providing education and training for disadvantaged women and girls. I've visited some of their projects in the last few months - inspirational:

I have a few more as well, but might save them for later!

Has anyone said abortion rights yet?

OldLadyKnowsNothing · 01/09/2010 16:38

Following TheBossofMe's comment about microcredit, I'd like to mention Kiva. You don't donate money, you lend it - and you can choose to lend to women only, if that's your preference.

I've been lending through them for about five years now, just keep recirculating the cash. :)

I am still waiting for catherine to respond, I am keeping an eye on this, it's not forgotten! When we have the word from MN we will know whether we can sticky, if not then I think we should do it anyway and just try to keep it bumped Smile

Any suggestions? Shall I report again or put something on site stuff? I don't want to hassle them... But I still think this is a really good idea Smile
