I wanted to take a moment to plug one of my favourite charities - the fistula foundation

Smile

I know that lots of people haven't heard of them - they do vital work operating on women who have fistulas as a result of childbirth or sexual violence, in Africa and elsewhere.

So what's your favourite charity/organisation? Come and tell me all about it Smile

Well we'll see what they say. I have reported my post suggesting it and asked nicely if they would sticky it at the top of feminism, with it fully disclaimered.

justa re the talking to other people - yes we could say that people can read it and if they think it's a good charity then spread the word!

DH just got in from work and he said that even if people don't donate, just more people knowing about these charities and what they are doing will raise awareness and put them in people's minds. There are loads on here already that I had no idea even existed!

That RAWA website is fascinating Dittany.

Keep em coming Grin

Len is right that even if MN say no we can do it anyway and just keep it bumped!

(But I hope they say yes, having it stickied would be miles better)

Someone posted a link a while back about women who have to manually clean out cesspits in India - manual scavenging - does anyone remember that? Is there a charity who are helping?

I found the thread about manual scavenging - it was probonbon - but there doens't seem to be a specific charity for it, although water aid mention it on their US site.

Let's put water aid in as it's always the women who seem to be walking for miles to access reasonable water (if there is any there at all).

Sorry kind of repeating what you said there proles.

Rosa - The UK fund for women and girls.

Rosa is the first UK-wide fund for projects working with women and girls. Our vision is of equality and justice for women and girls in the UK.While many women do enjoy great freedom and success, that?s simply not true for all women.

justabit · 30/08/2010 23:12

somebody once said to me that their job was to empower women to think about their rights as they walked miles to collect water.

I think highlighting a group a month is a great idea.

Thanks so much ISN'T. I think this is a great idea. I give what I can toa few charities (Oxfam, Fawcett, NSPCC and Medicins sans Frontiers), but would do my best to contribute to a women's charity every month. Even if they can't do a sticky, perhaps we could take turns at nominating a charity per month? Not sure how that would work, but would love to contribute, especially in the current climate when charities, especially women's charities, will be hit very hard. Alos, there are one offs like the women running the 5km challenge on Sunday for Fawcett and other women's charities and it would be good to be able to flag them up here.

RamblingRosa · 31/08/2010 19:34

I'm a fan of YWCA and End Violence Against Women. I love Fawcett Society at the moment for their legal action against the government. I'm tempted to join them for that alone.

The only monthly direct debits I do are to Shelter and my union though Blush ....I really should do more as there are lots of organisations that I think are doing brilliant work.

ISNT · 31/08/2010 19:45

No decision yet! I will report back as soon as I get an answer.

Jenny I think we will do something even if MNHQ don't want to sticky it - we can just try and keep it bumped! That's a good point about one offs - the plan for the charities was to work down the list on this thread but if there are one-offs happening I think we could highlight those as well!

Thanks to everyone who has added charities and organisations since yesterday, this is just great Smile

I'm very much a lurker on MN, but I love the feminism topic, and think this is a really great idea!

My suggestion is www.object.org.uk/, who do excellent work campaigning against lap dancing clubs and prostitution (working with Eaves).
