Has anyone felt better after having their Mirena coil removed?

Has anyone considered having their Mirena coil removed due to moodiness and mood swings? I've had mine in for 3 years now to give me progesterone - I also use the estrogen patches. I love that it has stopped my periods. However I am extremely tired and grumpy a lot of the time. I hate my husband! I'm finding it so hard to separate what is going on in my life from my emotions. But I am super grumpy, snappy, irritable, not really enjoying life, and I'm starting to wonder if the Mirena coil is having a negative effect. Has anyone come off it and actually felt better?

Yes. Mirena was a nightmare for me for both mental and physical effects.

CheekyRaven · 04/10/2026 13:46

I was a scitzo with this coil. I hd really dark thoughts. Took out after 4 months

OneSharpTurtle · 04/10/2026 13:59

I would never recommend mirena to anyone. It messed up my cycle and had so many unwarranted issues with it. 18months later and despite coming off it back copper coil, I am still suffering residual side effects. They need to stop pushing it towards women in their 40s. I will never forgive them. I was absolutely fine pre mirena. I have met many women who's lives have been negatively affected by mirena. It's awful.

MildlyAnnoyed · 04/10/2026 14:05

I had it 16 years ago when my son was born. It was awful for my mental health & I had it taken out within 2 months. I was apprehensive about having it again but I did & I love it this time around.

chronicallytired5 · 04/10/2026 14:06

Following as im interested, booked to have mine out next week as I have felt horrid the last couple months. Had it put in during surgery and I had issues with other types of progesterone so told this would be better but its really not. Really hoping that things improve quick after removal.

Mamamia35 · 04/10/2026 14:16

Hello. If you’ve had it for 3 years, have you been mean and moody since then or is it more recent? I’m just wondering why you think it’s Mirena when you’re also taking estrogen. Perhaps you need a review and to reduce the estrogen dose because of an imbalance. I’ve had Mirena for about 8 years. I did get that moody, angst state but then I started HRT and felt better, but you need a balance. Also maybe your husband is just a pain in the arse?!

KidsDoBetter · 04/10/2026 14:20

It was dire for me. Gaslit by doctors saying there is no way the hormones can affect you. Bloody did. Hair fell out. Mood was on the floor. Much better getting it out

HighlandReflection · 04/10/2026 14:26

I had the Mirena coil fitted in 2011 and it was a complete nightmare for me mentally and physically (my womb is tilted). Stopped my periods but, my moods became severe. Also, I ended up with an infection in my womb.
My gp refused to remove it because I hadn't given it enough time (2 years) so went to family planning clinic for removal and have been fine ever since.

Bear in mind the Mirena provides synthetic progesTIN rather than body identical progesteRONE.
Not the same thing at all

HairyBanana · 04/10/2026 17:02

It doesn't give you progesterone, it only gives synthetic progestin which has a completely different effect on your body. Moving from the Mirena to progesterone was a brilliant move for me, for moods, bleeding, sleep, and migraines.

Rachie1974 · 04/10/2026 19:59

Common side effect of synthetic progestogens (all birth control) is low mood and anxiety, common side effect of body identical progesterone is improved mood and lower anxiety.
The NHS push the coil for HRT because it's cheap, not because it's good for you.

How old are you ? If you’re nearing 40 /45 it could seriously be screwing with you as you enter or are in perimenopause.

Mamamia35 · 05/10/2026 13:38

How did you all persuade your GP to give you body identical progesterone? It’s a debate every time I go.

Reachforthestars00 · 05/10/2026 14:04

On the flip side, I'm on my 3rd Mirena. I've had one throughout the entirety of my 40s with no problems whatsoever. Perhaps I'm in the minority, but mine is a different experience.

BigGapMum · 05/10/2026 16:14

I was misled into having a Mirena coil as part of my HRT. It affacted my mental health quite badly, so I managed to get it removed fairly promptly and was back to my usual self within a week. IMHO there is almost always a lack of informed consent when these are fitted as medics seem to sell the benefits, but do not mention the risks or problems. I believe it should mandatory for the Mirena IUD to be fitted only after both risks and benefits are explained and a signed consent is obtained. The NHS is not transparent about the risks currently and women are being badly served and misled.

I told mine it was my 'informed decision' (if you quote that they can't really disagree with you) and I refused to leave the room until I had the prescription in my hand, GP tried to dismiss me, I stayed seated, they asked if there was anything else, I said yes a prescription for HRT, in my case she was refusing to prescribe due to my family history of breast cancer, I did my research and wanted to try it, I got the prescription.

CrazyCatLady13 · 05/10/2026 18:24

I had 3, then got a serious infection & was hospitalised after the 4th was put in so had it removed. I was amazed at how much better I felt without it, I didn't realise how flat it had made me.

My sex drive came back, I was more affectionate, just better all round. 4 years on & I'd never have another one.

Randomchat · 05/10/2026 18:29

I hated it and had it removed. Moods and periods all over the place. That was before menopause though so not quite the same as you. I knew quite soon after it was inserted that it wasn't working for me.

I know other people though who have had one for years and been happy. We're all different.

If you think it's not right for you now then talk to your GP and see what they recommend. If you want to try something else then do. There's nothing stopping you.

Autumnallaround · 05/10/2026 18:38

Mine possibly saved my life and my marriage.

I went from using utrogestan, thinking awful thoughts daily, crying constantly and being so tired I couldn't cope. To having energy, stopped crying, could function like a human being again.

I had this before my mirena. No persuading necessary, it's a logical prescription alongside oestrogen.

My GP just asked which progesterone i would like. I said utrogestan. Job done.

redannie18 · 05/10/2026 18:56

I actually still want to cry when i think about my time with a mirena coil and it was probably 10 years ago. I felt really awful, more physically than anything. Doctor swore it wasn’t cause of coil but i felt so much better after it was removed.

DLRPmember · 05/10/2026 19:04

I’m on my fourth. I can honestly say it’s been brilliant. Sorted out contraception since 2005 and no periods. This will be my last one as I’m probably heading into menopause. The only bad thing has been getting them put in and removed.

AvidPlumRaven · 07/10/2026 12:27

I’ve just had mine removed during hysterectomy. I had it in for 3 years. It’s only been out 5 days but already I’m sleeping better, feel less anxious, and just more chill

Loops1987 · 07/10/2026 13:27

Yes I had one fitted in 2019 after my second child. It made me a raging psycho bitch with absolutely no patience and hated everyone.

I think I gave it about 15 months before I had it removed and went onto desogestrel which I’ve been fine with ever since.

LUNELLE1111 · 12/10/2026 00:09

Hi OP,
I am certainly hoping so. I had the Mirena fitted a year ago. And although after 3 months of continuous bleeding, my periods calmed and eventually almost stopped, I am scheduled to have it removed on Wednesday.
I have come to realise that my body does not react well to synthetic hormones.
I have had sore achy breasts, low mood, brain fog and zero libido for a year!!!
I don't miss the monthy bleed at all. But the side effects and symptoms of the ghost period are driving me insane each month! And the perimenopause hormone fluctuations thrown into the mix is a disaster.
Nervous of the crash that some experience but going to give it a go!
