Abnormality found on ultrasound

I’ve been having weird bleeding the last sort of 10 months on & off. I’m 35 & have always had regular periods. However the last 10 months they’ve gone on longer, started again mid month etc.

Had an internal ultrasound today & was told that the lining of my womb is thicker in a certain place. I was told this ‘might’ be a polyp but they weren’t sure. I don’t see the consultant now for 3 weeks to discuss results & my mind is racing.

I think the results would definitely be quicker. The advantage with going privately is you can chase them up if necessary or they should just call you very soon afterwards. You’re paying their bill, so they’ll do everything they can to provide a quick and efficient turnaround.

I wanted some tests done privately a couple of years ago and booked it myself, just ringing local private hospitals for costs, dates etc. You can organise it all yourself if you want to. You know what needs doing, so why not?

I’m 45 and for the past few months my periods have been longer. I have a lot of spotting at the end with pink light blood. Then I started getting a couple of episodes of heavier bleeds on random days. I booked in with the nurse initially as I was overdue a smear. Straight away she saw a polyp so I was referred urgently for a colposcopy. I went there on Monday and had it removed. It’s been sent off to be looked at as he said it was a bit ‘unusual’ which is freaking me out. He then sent me for scan the same day to cover all bases which I am grateful for but it’s lead to a lot stress. The sonographer said my lining was thick which could signify a polyp but she didn’t actually say she could see one which again has sent me spiralling. I’ve now got to go for a hysteroscopy on Sunday in outpatients which I am really worried about as I’ve heard it can be extremely painful. I am ready and armed with questions about pain relief etc and I am prepared to ask for a general anaesthetic but then worried about prolonging things and not knowing what’s going on for longer. I’ve contacted a private hospital to see what time frame they could give me a general in so I know all my options (I have private healthcare through my partner’s job).

@RaspberryMojito I wouldn't bother waiting for the NHS if you can go private...

I needed an ultrasound last week as I felt my ovaries were getting a bit clunky - lots of discomfort. So Weds morning, I used BUPA GP service over the phone to get a referral. Then called my preferred gynae choice. Was booked in for TVU the next day which was Thursday and I have a follow up with Consultant in ten days.

I don't need a hysteroscopy this time, but if I did, private consultants usually only do them with GA anyway. And the last one I had privately, the histology was back in a week. Plus I got to see photos of the inside of my uterus!

To the OP, please don't worry. My endometrium went up to 7mm a couple of years ago. Had a hysteroscopy D&C and all sorted. Totally benign.

I think as the PP said, polyps are super super common.

Hi @bolderdashblue, I hope you have your results now, I just wanted to send you a message of reassurance. I went through similar 6 weeks ago, very very thick womb lining discovered, weird bleeding, warned likely looking at cancer. Results came back as absolutely fine!

Hey @RaspberryMojitosorry to hear you’ve been through that, funny enough I had my polyp also removed on Monday under GA. I’ve no experience of having one without GA but have heard mixed things. I would ask for gas & air to be there just in case. Take pain killers just before too like you say. I’m still waiting on my biopsy results, just trying to keep busy. Polyps are super common. Also with the private health care I went to a hospital further away from me just because they could see me much quicker. You’ll feel better when the hysteroscopy is done, because you’ll have the ball rolling then on getting some answers. Best of luck, & a big hug.

@familyissues12355Thank you for your comment & glad all was ok with you! I had the polyp removed on Monday.. it was quite large the consultant said. I saw pictures of it, which was interesting. And gross 😂 I sort of go between ‘it’s going to be awful news’ to ‘it’ll be fine, polyps are super common & most of them benign’ but I can’t change whatever the results are going to say, I’ll just have to deal with it at the time if it’s bad.
