Mirena coil- experiences

Twinkletwinklelil · 09/03/2026 12:24

I’ve been referred to get a Mirena..
I don’t want to go on the pill etc (felt it messed with my MH)
I have extremely painful and heavy periods since having kids.
im scared! Side effects (esp weight gain??) etc. what are your experiences?

has anyone found issues with the following:

  • weight gain
  • any issues with gut health
  • skin? Breakouts; eczema, etc
  • mental health changes?

No side effects and no more periods!

shellyleppard · 09/03/2026 12:26

Stopped my periods.... such a relief!

ladyhail · 09/03/2026 12:32

I had spotting for about 6 months, which was an absolute PITA, but since then no periods! It has been life changing for that.

I also had similar concerns re MH as I had tried the pill to deal with my heavy periods and virtually had a breakdown. I haven’t had anything like that with the coil.

No issues with my skin.

My weight has crept up a bit over the last couple of years but I think that’s mainly due to perimenopause and not the coil.

For the lack of periods alone, the coils has really changed my life.

Thank u!

None of those and no periods.

SpanielsAreNutty · 09/03/2026 19:35

The only side effect was a complete lack of periods.

Bloody brilliant 😁

LBOCS2 · 09/03/2026 19:36

I’m about to have mine changed - it will be my 6th, so safe to say I’ve been happy with it. No periods with it in, no real side effects, and has a much much better impact on my mental health than being on the pill did, as the pill made me feel like I was going mad.

TofuTuesday · 09/03/2026 19:36

Skin was terrible, insertion was horrendous, mental health dipped. I had it removed after a year.

Offherrockingchair · 09/03/2026 19:37

I had a dire experience. No issues with insertion or removal, but spotting for two weeks out of four and horrendous headaches. Had it removed after 9 months and life went back to normal. I was disappointed as I’d heard so many good stories but it obvs didn’t agree with me.

CosiFannyTutte · 10/03/2026 12:48

It agreed with me. Had it at 48. Spotting for a few months but no more periods.
Put on a bit of weight but it coincided with peri so hard to tell if it was the coil or not. Mental health fine. Worth it for me.

AllTheWatersTurnedToClouds · 10/03/2026 12:51

Fantastic, I'm on my 3rd. Hurts like hell to put in, but i've not had kids and it's only every 8 years... no symptoms other than no periods

Worriedmrs · 10/03/2026 13:01

It never stopped my period but made it more manageable. I have adenomyosis and had flooding horrendous periods with a lot of pain. After mirena, I had a normal period on the lighter side. From 3 packs of sanitary napkins to barely using one and no maxi pads. I am so glad I had it.
I did gain weight but don’t really care as I don’t have to deal with my earlier issues. MH wise I am calmer than before.

twilightcafe · 10/03/2026 13:07

For me, Mirena was great until it wasn't. Then it slipped too low in my womb and I had seven months of light bleeding/spotting every day. I had it removed last week. Will stick to progesterone and estrogen pills with an estrogen pessary and see how I get on with that for HRT purposes.

zurigo · 10/03/2026 13:08

I'm on my third Mirena and I've never had any of those problems OP. It's been great for me, although it hasn't stopped my periods, which I'd hoped it would. It made them much lighter though, so now at age 52, when my DM was bleeding heavily in the run-up to menopause, I'm not and never have bled heavily. For what you need it for I'd say it should be ideal, but if you have had problems with hormonal contraception and your MH this is something you should get advice on before you have it fitted.

Twinkletwinklelil · 10/03/2026 21:58

Oh this is so confusing because everyone has had a different experience

I’ve had a couple miscarriages, a traumatic birth and a lovely birth.. I’ve had gynae problems following it
I just really don’t want to go through anymore stress down there 😓😓

my dr was convinced this was the best course of action for me. I am glad I asked for opinions! Thank you all.

I am on my second. Jury is still out for me. Was very happy first time round, no periods, no weight gain. This time, like someone else, I think it is too low as I am still getting spotting 6 months in and have gained weight. But I am 53 so the weight might just be life stage, although it seems to have started around the same time.

clareykb · 10/03/2026 22:04

I had one put in in November have had loads of gynea problems following a really complex twin pregnancy 13 years ago, cervical surgery and fibroids so I had it put in under general and the fibroids removed at the same time. It has been transformational! I have gone from bleeding through a towel and a pair of period pants an hour for about 10 days a month to maybe 3 days of spotting the only thing that is a bit annoying is that I'm now pretty irregular where I wasn't before... However this is still much more manageable and seems to be easing a bit now. I would say though hasn't stopped my PMT. I haven't gained weight though, in fact I have lost a bit as am feeling better and more able to do exercise I think.

clareykb · 10/03/2026 22:06

Oh and am 43. No real menopausal symptoms yet so can't comment on that side

WhatNextImScared · 10/03/2026 22:06

I have mixed feelings about it. Possibly minor weight gain, nothing significant (and could just be perimenopause), my skin has improved which is a bonus, as has the bladder pain issues that have plagued me since my 20s (I’m early 40s).
I had it fitted after having fibroids removed and it has successfully made my periods much lighter. Sadly they haven’t disappeared but they are now very manageable. But I spot or bleed lightly for half of every month and often bleed after high impact exercise eg tough cardio. I’m also getting much heavier (although normal style) discharge which is annoying. Dr says that’s all normal but I’m awaiting a scan to double check it’s correctly placed.
Ive had it for 18 months. Cant decide whether to take it out or not

ForFunGoose · 10/03/2026 22:06

TofuTuesday · 09/03/2026 19:36

Skin was terrible, insertion was horrendous, mental health dipped. I had it removed after a year.

Same, didn’t agree with me at all.
Had an endometrial ablation for heavy periods and dh got the snip for contraception.

WhatNextImScared · 10/03/2026 22:07

Oh I still get pmt and sore boobs pre period are worse. But again, not unmanageable

Polythene · 10/03/2026 22:11

I went mental.

😕

Really bad I guess depression but also very very angry. At everything! Never experienced anything like it before.

It was awful.

Apparently very rare but keep an eye on your mood.

HeBeaverandSheBeaver · 10/03/2026 22:11

Dd needed it out after 6 months due to horrendous panic attacks and anxiety. Also skin breakouts.

dizzydizzydizzy · 10/03/2026 22:12

Swimmingatdawn · 09/03/2026 12:25

No side effects and no more periods!

Same!

I went from a 14-day cycle with periods that lasted 7 days and having to set an alarm in the middle of the night to avoid flooding, to no periods at all. I was like genuinely like magic.

timetostandup79 · 10/03/2026 22:12

I’ve had 2 kids. First birth traumatic. Second was straightforward. I had a mirena between the kids and had no issues. Had one after the second and really struggled with it. Could feel it, had recurrent thrush, got it removed. Many years later I tried it again and it’s ace. No periods. No mood swings. Spotting for a good few months but now I have no bleeding.
