I’ve been referred to get a Mirena..
I don’t want to go on the pill etc (felt it messed with my MH)
I have extremely painful and heavy periods since having kids.
im scared! Side effects (esp weight gain??) etc. what are your experiences?

has anyone found issues with the following:

  • weight gain
  • any issues with gut health
  • skin? Breakouts; eczema, etc
  • mental health changes?

None of the side effects you described. Just bleeding was a bit erratic for quite a while ( but much lighter)

whatsit84 · 10/03/2026 22:18

Had it for 6 months and nauseous all the time. Bleeding more lightly but randomly. Considering having it removed.

ChocolateHobbit · 10/03/2026 22:21

I haven't had a period now for 7 years since getting it. Game changer.

SewingButterfly · 10/03/2026 22:21

I bled solidly for 3 months after insertion, then had endless thrush. After constantly being told to wait another month, and another month, and yet another month for things to settle - after 9 months my gp surgery finally agreed to remove it.

But i reacted badly to the pill (weight gain & low mood), the implant (weight gain, no libido), and pregnancy (HG lasted 9 months) so its not massively surprising i didn't take to mirena either. I'm now starting to enter perimenopause, and I'm dreading the idea of HRT as hormones just don't seem to mix with my body.

I have had it for five months and was dreading it at first based on what I had read online.. I also had terrible acne as a teen and was terrified that would return. But it’s been absolutely fine, mildly sore boobs and light bleeding at first but now no trouble at all. No bleeding, no spots, no weight gain, I don’t even notice it’s there.

Hohofortherobbers · 10/03/2026 22:26

No side effects, no more periods 🥳

Crikeyalmighty · 10/03/2026 22:30

I never had a period from 36, no gut issues , no bad skin, only issue was it was awkward trying to guess menopause if asked - in fact I totally forgot I had it and never had it removed - I’m 64 now , - I probably should!

Wish44 · 10/03/2026 22:34

I was very tired for the first 4 months it was in- felt like very early pregnancy. But then my periods stopped and it’s been wonderful ever since.

ChuffingNoraah · 10/03/2026 22:34

Absolutely no side effects, no periods, insertion was a breeze (one SVD about 8 years before insertion and one caesarean) and completely forget it’s even there. I’m a huge fan.

Notmycircusnotmydonkeys · 10/03/2026 22:41

I had in my early 20s, it hadn’t been licensed in the UK very long. Whilst it did the job of stopping me getting pregnant it messed up my mental health so badly I know bitterly regret it- it took a long time post DC and no hormonal contraception for me to realise that the mental health struggles of my 20s/early 30th were probably down to Mirena- it was only when doing course work for breastfeeding peer support training that I found out about biphasic progesterone response- in some women a low dose is really impactful in bad ways, whereas others it’s just fine.
bizarrely oral progesterone HRT is a bloody godsend and I wouldn’t be without it!
I guess you have to give it a go and if it isn’t right after a couple of months you can get it removed - that’s much less of a deal than having it inserted.

canisquaeso · 13/03/2026 15:03

10/10 no notes, I wish it had been my contraception of choice all along - even insertion wasn’t as bad as I thought it would be and I had cancelled my appointment 3 times out of pure fear due to horror stories online.

I still get my period and cramps every now and then, but nothing like it was before. I was taking days off sick almost monthly due to horrible, debilitating cramps.

AsparagusSeason · 13/03/2026 15:10

I had one on my early 30s and I did think it affected my skin, although my GP dismissed this.

I had another one fitted at 50, and I bloody love it. No side effects whatsoever. My peri periods were catastrophically heavy, so to be able to switch them off has been life-changing.

Yuja · 13/03/2026 15:19

I found the insertion was worse than advertised and I had on off pain for a month. After that, however, it settled and I’m so glad I had it. I rarely have a period and if I do it’s like 1 day of spotting. No side effects and no weight gain

BigGapMum · 13/03/2026 15:33

It caused me to have sever anxiety and a lot of tearfulness, which is very unlike me normally. I had it removed fairly promptly and was back to my normal self in a few days. Some women love them but they definitely do not suit everyone.

bonesbuffy · 13/03/2026 15:42

No side effects, no periods. Had it put in as part of endometriosis treatment

Herecomethedaffodils · 18/03/2026 08:54

Had my first Mirena in 2022 aged 50 and genuinely wish I’d done it 20 years earlier. I know everyone is different (as this thread proves) but for me it has been incredible. My periods had become really heavy and irregular so the fact that after a few weeks of spotting as things settled, I’ve had nothing at all, has made life so much easier. I had it fitted at the same time as starting oestrogen for menopausal symptoms and honestly it’s been a fabulous combination for me. I’m calmer, less stressed, less anxious, less angry (!!) and my only regret is not doing it years ago, so I could have enjoyed my 30’s and 40’s more 😢 For those of you who are now onto 2nd/3rd Mirenas, what can I expect when it’s replaced? (I’m told this is next year) Will I likely have the same results, ie settling down then no periods……I really hope so 🤞
