Endometrial ablation experiences!

AAT86 · 17/02/2026 19:25

i had my gynaecology appointment yesterday due to having the most horrendous periods for the last 4 years. I had a scan which showed thickened womb lining and polyps! I had an internal examimation (like a smear) at my appointment and the consultant has recommended a hysteroscopy under GA due to my cervix being very closed ( her words) which she said would be painful for me to have done with LA. We discussed treatment options and alongside the hysteroscopy she is going to take a biopsy, remove all my polyps and do an ablation! I’m extremely happy that I was listened to and not pressured into having any procedures done whilst awake but since coming home and researching I’ve read that ablations should not be done until after a biopsy has been taken and results come back. I did ask if she thought my lining etc could be due to anything untoward such as The C word etc and she said in her opinion no. She did say that if anything looked not right during the hysteroscopy then the ablation would not be done. Has anyone else had anything similar? And what was the outcome after your ablation how were your periods and pms symptoms after! Thank x

I’ve had 4 over 14 years. For me it eases for 6 months then I go back through the waiting game.

BetterOffNow · 17/02/2026 19:38

I had it 10 years ago and haven't had a period since because they inserted a mirena coil at the same time and I've been through the menopause in the last few years. It embedded itself in the healing womb lining so can't be removed but as I'm post menopause now my specialist says its not a problem to leave it there.

AttilaTheMeerkat · 17/02/2026 19:41

I have had ablation surgery for my constant bleeding arising from peri menopause. In my case it was successful in that I have not bled since. I have had polyps and endometriosis removed as part of a previous laparoscopic type op which is keyhole surgery. I did not have a biopsy taken beforehand.

Happymchappyface · 17/02/2026 19:46

I had mine done about 3 or 4 years ago. Best thing I ever did.

It didn’t stop my periods but they are so light now. Spotting really for a week and no pain at all.

honestly my life has been dramatically changed for the better.

thats amazing! I think even if it didn’t stop my periods altogether and even if they were light it would make a world of difference compared to what I put up with now on a monthly

I'm post menopausal now, and you don't want to know how mine went! Hint.... it was not pleasant for me anyway, and still isn't nearly ten days later. I had endo resection and hysteroscopy to take away lining and polyps together with biopsy. Awaiting pathology now.

GnomeDePlume · 20/02/2026 12:51

I had mine done about 12 years ago. Havent had a period since. 59 now so probably through menopause.

For me it was a walk in the park and absolutely the best decision. My periods were ridiculously heavy and leaving me dangerously anemic.

AAT86 · 14/04/2026 18:48

Thanks everyone! I’m due to have the procedure on the 27th of this month, fingers crossed it helps and goes well

@AAT86 I very much hope it works for you. Good luck for the procedure.

NellieTheElephant1 · 14/04/2026 20:52

Mine was honestly life changing, I went from flooding, clots and chronic anaemia to a few days of light spotting needing only a panty liner. I have a fibroid and was warned the procedure might not be as successful due to this, but thankfully it still worked really well. Good luck and I hope you also have a great result 🤞

Dliplop · 14/04/2026 21:06

I had mine on the 30th. Unlike most people I did have pain and cramping for almost 2 weeks after. We did a biopsy before to rule out cancer so I feel good about that. Hoping it works well and I can be a success story.

Bloodyboiling · 14/04/2026 21:16

Had one 18 years ago and a biopsy was done at the same time. Had a bit of pain for a couple of weeks afterwards.

Went from flooding so bad I couldn't sometimes go out for several days a month and having to drive with a bin bag on the seat, to very light periods.

One if the best decisions I ever made.

I’m glad to hear that! I’m hoping it works for me as I’ve read so many mixed outcomes

I was the same, I almost cancelled mine after reading some online horror stories. But afterwards I just wished I'd had it done sooner.

All the best for a great outcome 🤞

I had an endometrial resection (as they called it) at the end of 2019 and I haven't had a period since (aside from the initial bleeding as I was healing).
My advice would be to take it easy. I thought I'd be back up and about the next day but I was in a bit of discomfort for about 5 days and took time off work.

Good luck x

Nincompoo · 15/04/2026 17:51

I had mine done in 2020 at 40 and it is the best thing I’ve ever done. I had been chronically anemic for all of my adult life and, with a ferritin of 6, felt like shit.

I don’t have periods anymore beyond a bit of spotting. I do get occasional period pains which are worse than before but only a couple of times a year.

I wish I’d don’t it sooner

uselesseuphless · 15/04/2026 18:33

I had one but I still have periods and spot literally all the time. Apparently I also have adenomyosis so should probably never have had it in the first place 😩

I have fibroids and possibly adenomyosis and I literally read the other day that I probably shouldn't have had it.

This is my problem I have had low ferritin for the last 3-4 years and it’s never been above 15 at one point it was 4.4! I cant leave the house some months on the 2nd day of my period as it’s just horrendous! I leak through my clothes etc. the only thing that concerns me is what my pms is going to be like as essentially if I done have a period how will my body know to start a new cycle! I’m hoping it does not make it worse

Oh no have you gone back to be seen? I’ve read so many stores about false eblations and that next stage has been hysterectomy for some woman

Thanks! I’m due to go on holiday 4 weeks after so I’m praying that all will be well and I have a smooth recovery, my period will technically be due at the end of the holiday and I’m hoping it won’t be awful

I had mine 6 years ago and haven't had a period since - which is exactly what I was after. I was discharged after 3 months. No complications that I am aware of. My fibroids are submucosal / intramural so weren't within the uterine cavity.

I am back on the waiting list about other issues (perimenopause, mood, other physical pains) but ended up booking a private consultation yesterday - I am sick of waiting.
