Mirena coil, help!

I’m currently on HRT and take Utrogestan, which I’ve been fine with. I’m due to have the Mirena coil fitted mainly so I don’t have to remember tablets every night, and for contraception. Since booking, I’m only seeing negative stories. Has anyone swapped from Utrogestan to Mirena and had a positive experience?
I’m hoping because I have been taking Utrogestan for a year that if I do have any symptoms it will be minimal. Or am I being naive?

Anyone?

I've not been on Utrogestan, but am on my second coil and due to get it replaced this year which will probably take me through menopause. I don't know what you've heard about it, but I'm very happy - the first fitting was very unpleasant and took a couple of days to settle down, but since then it has all gone great!

whattodo455 · 14/01/2026 16:40

Thanks @LordEmsworth. I have seen a few posts that have said they had to get it taken out as it was making them depressed or causing pain. I am hoping because I tolerate utrogestan well, that I will have minimal side effects.

Getting my fifth and final one this year, as I'm nearly out the other side of menopause. I've had 25 years of no periods, has seen me through peri alongside oestrogen and this coil has been fantastic for me.

I swapped from utrogestan to Mirena three months ago as I had been getting lots of bleeding between periods and a thickened womb lining. I too was terrified of Mirena based on the overwhelmingly negative reviews online: I was expecting intense pain upon insertion , mood swings and irritability , constant bleeding, terrible acne etc etc..
In fact, it’s been fine. A little bit of a pinch going in (but for a few seconds), some breast tenderness for the first few weeks and some light spotting here and there but fine with a panty liner. I just feel normal really.. I of course write this with the awareness that some people do have a terrible time with it and not detracting from or doubting their experiences at all, but I suspect the people who have had a ‘fine’ experience like me haven’t bothered to write a review online , so the reviews are skewed towards those with more extreme experiences, as with most things on the internet. So, it’s worth giving it a try and seeing how it goes.

I have both - I take progesterone but also have a mirena
the mirena came first and no issues

Deerabeep · 14/01/2026 18:03

Love mine in Perimemopause, and I had to get one taken out after bad side effects in my 30s. So lovely to stop flooding and not have to worry about all that side of things! I’ve had no issues with it this time

IcySwan · 14/01/2026 20:01

Hi. I had mine fitted on christmas eve after the consultant said i have adenomyosis.

Take painkillers half an hour before you to in so they kick in when you need them to. If the pain is too much (i struggled but the consultant was quick, everyone is different) then you can ask them to stop or for gas and air. Your body your call.

I got some buscopan in on the advice of the nurse as the same muscles that cramp during an upset stomach cramp with womb relatef shenanigans. It really did help.

The mirena hasnt done a lot for the pain i get but i no longer flood through my clothes and the clots are a lot less. That in itself has made a massive difference. No pain from the coil itself. I did have tender breasts for a couple of days around new year but that was it.

I found the mirena helpful. I know a few people that have. For every horror story theres another women absolutely fine. Theres other treatments too if this isnt right. Dont be afraid to advocate for yourself. No one else will lol.

Hope everything goes well x

I had to switch from pills to the coil as I'm using weight loss jabs which can hinder the absorption of progesterone.
For the first couple of months, I spotted quite a bit but nothing since. My only side effect is lack of libido although I wasn't doing so great with that on the pills so not sure I can completely blame the coil.

bronnibro · 14/01/2026 20:41

Also had the mirena second time now and it's been great, very low hormone levels, no remembering pills, last 8 years now and very minimal bleeding or pms symptoms which is at odds from pill fot me so I think it is a good option

DramaAlpaca · 14/01/2026 20:46

I swapped Utrogestan for a Mirena two years ago and I much prefer it. I was getting some breakthrough bleeding with the Utrogestan even though I was postmenopausal so my gynaecologist suggested I get a Mirena instead. It works really well and I've had no side effects and no more bleeding. Also, I found the insertion painless.

Edited to add that it's my second Mirena. I got the first one during perimenopause and it was great because it stopped my periods completely. I wasn't planning on getting another as it had seen me out the other side of the menopause so there was no need. Then I had to have investigations for postmenopausal bleeding and I was recommended to have another Mirena by my gynaecologist as it would stop the bleeding. It felt a bit weird getting a Mirena at the ripe old age of 59, but it was a good decision.

Moveyourbleedingarse · 14/01/2026 20:51

I changed from utro to mirena. Best thing I ever did.

I sleep better, no more emotional turmoil, very few periods. I get the odd one but that's it.

itsmeafterall · 14/01/2026 20:54

Me. Coil much better and I don't get the dizziness I got with the pills.

It's a pain getting the coil in and out but that not every 5 years so worth it for me.

whattodo455 · 14/01/2026 21:19

Thanks everyone who has replied. I feel more positive about having it done

I swapped from pill to coil, I’m on my third one now. Best decision I ever made, no periods, no worrying about taking pills. Yeah it can pinch a bit going in (not after DC though 😂), but honestly it’s a game changer, I previously had heavy periods and it’s handled that wonderfully!

caramac04 · 14/01/2026 21:33

I’ve not had the hrt but had my first mirena coil aged 39/40 and had the last removed aged 55. It was brilliant. No periods and sailed through the menopause, no hot flushes etc.

Not for that reason, but I had one fitted a few years back because I was bleeding non-stop (start of peri).

It has been a bloody miracle for me, not just because it fixed that issue but because my periods stopped altogether, and I had suffered incredibly heavy and painful periods my whole life. I wish I’d had it twenty years ago.

Now that I’ve started HRT it’s also brilliant because it covers the progesterone portion so all I need to worry about is my oestrogel.

I did find the fitting of it a bit uncomfortable though so maybe be prepared for that.

CaffeineAndChords · 14/01/2026 21:43

My mirena was absolutely brilliant. I loved it. Didn’t know I had it, I only had it removed because were TTC. I recommend it to anyone and everyone who asks for contraception advice!

mrsnjw · 14/01/2026 22:03

Had a coil fitted in April and I wish I had had it fitted sooner. No heavy bleeding, migraines gone, mood swings evaporated and I don’t have to worry about it for five years. I’m 53 and apply two pumps of gel in the morning. Having it fitted was ok a bit uncomfortable when they clamp the cervix open but it’s for a few seconds. Honestly worth a try!

Jaspering · 14/01/2026 22:16

I was one with a bad experience. Felt utterly depressed. Asked to have it removed. But it had got lost. Ten medical appointments later with various people looking up my innards with a torch, it was eventually removed under GA. I would never go down that path again. Absolutely awful. I then went on to develop a condition called IIH, fluid build up on the brain, which some are now saying, mostly in the USA, could possibly be linked. I wasn’t overweight at the time (which can be a factor). That took a lumbar puncture and 9 months of very strong medication, with some awful side effects, to fix. My head has never been the same since. I’ve had vertigo then fibromyalgia since. So whilst lots have no issues, some do. I’d say it doesn’t come without risks. So if you don’t absolutely need it, don’t go there. Just my opinion.

GargoylesofBeelzebub · 14/01/2026 22:20

LOVE my mirena coil. Cant believe I didn’t get one earlier than I did.

juicelooseabootthishoose · 15/01/2026 07:29

Im on my third and will have a fourth. So had it before peri menopause but its been handy not needing to take progesterone since starting hrt.

my best friend is also on her second and has no issues.

mild discomfort during fitting, but manageable.

whattodo455 · 15/01/2026 10:20

Hopefully mine will be positive too. Did anyone experience weight gain after having it fitted? I have lost weight since I have been on HRT but seen some comments to say there is a possibility
of weight gain.

@whattodo455 none. I did have a couple of bloated months but that settled once the coil did.

I always get bloated with progesterone so it was to be expected.

Blushingm · 15/01/2026 18:25

Love my Mirena. I’ve had one before - then had Levosert now back to mirena
