Mirena coil, help!

I’m currently on HRT and take Utrogestan, which I’ve been fine with. I’m due to have the Mirena coil fitted mainly so I don’t have to remember tablets every night, and for contraception. Since booking, I’m only seeing negative stories. Has anyone swapped from Utrogestan to Mirena and had a positive experience?
I’m hoping because I have been taking Utrogestan for a year that if I do have any symptoms it will be minimal. Or am I being naive?

Loved mirena, unfortunately my uterus likes to eject them!

whattodo455 · 15/01/2026 21:27

Oh no really. I’ve heard a few have came out.

Just to keep you updated. I had the Levosert coil fitted. They said it’s the sister product to the Mirena. Insertion was slightly uncomfortable but it was fine. I’ve not felt anything since. Had a small amount of bleeding but that seems to have stopped now. Fingers crossed this will work for me

Hope it agrees with you-I had it fitted under GA in May (had to have another procedure).

My periods haven’t stopped, to my utter disappointment, they are much lighter but go on for days (best part of 2 weeks).

I’m not sure how I feel about it-I feel that I’ve become less tolerant and more irritable/snappy.

I got my first coil (merina) about a month and a half ago. My symptoms of my ADHD have been way more manageable, less brain fog/distracted, had some spotting but very light. I've only had one period but instead of it being very heavy and so painful I normally threw up from the pain I hardly felt anything but it did last for 10 days rather then it's usual 4. Hoping it gets shorter over time 😂 was weird having a period with no pain as I've always had terrible periods and I'm in my 30s. I've also noticed my junk food cravings are way less. Hope it works out for us both!

I’ve had the Mirena since 19 - now 46. I had huge issues with never ending periods - 8 /10 weeks of very heavy flooding etc. pills didn’t work. Eventually got the mirena inserted and it’s been life changing - I only have positive things to say other than some weight gain.

Clearinguptheclutter · 17/01/2026 13:41

I had mine put in yesterday, obviously early days but the insertion was way less painful than I imagined and thus far just had some extremely light spotting

I have several friends (late 40s) who have it and rave about it. I will take their opinion over randoms on the internet

I have been fine up until today since the fitting 8 days ago. However I am now cramping. I am due on my period in the next few days. Is this normal when you have your first period? I didn’t have this much pain before with my period, also I tried earlier to find the strings and I cannot find it 🙈. I stopped taking my utrogestan the day before too. Not sure if this is normal

Funny you should say that I had mine put in just over a week ago and now have the most painful period I’ve had in years
doesnt bode well

Clearinguptheclutter · 24/01/2026 15:32

Ps I did find the strings but they are a very long way up IYSWIM

whattodo455 · 24/01/2026 15:37

Maybe this is normal if we are both similar. I have taken some ibuprofen which has taken the edge off. I’ve never had to take tablets before when I have been on my period. Well not since I was a teenager. But I’m hoping this is normal. I gave up trying to find it after 5 mins, it made me feel a bit queasy 😩

Yeah I’ve taken ibuprofen too, I haven’t had to do that for periods for years. I used to have painful periods but not really since I had the DCs

really hope things settle down for both of us

whattodo455 · 24/01/2026 15:52

Hope you’re feeling better soon. Did you have Mirena or Levosert fitted?

Winglessvulture · 24/01/2026 16:05

No experience of utrogestan, but I've had a coil for a few years now and really like it. I spent year in the combined pill but due to cervical errosions needed to switch to a progesterone contraceptive. The fitting was difficult, I ended up having to have mine fitted by a gynaecologist, but I have personally found it really helpful for period pains etc and plan to have another once this one needs replacing.

I had Mirena

newrubylane · 24/01/2026 16:41

I had mine fitted on 5 Jan, on the third day of my period. I literally have not stopped bleeding since - mostly light/spotting but had some cramping and very heavy bleeding last night, which I assumed was the start of my period, but whoch has disappeared again today. It was fitted to try to help reduce my very heavy periods, and so far I'm not sure that constant lighter bleeding is preferable! However reports suggest bleeding and cramping can be a bit erratic for the first 3-6 months, so I'm trying to be patient.

Funfuntimes12 · 04/02/2026 09:01

I was in the opposite position changing from the coil to utrogestan. I was nervous did it last Tuesday and so far I’ve been great. I had two coils one was great the other I had a few issues with so removed it. Honestly you’ll probably be fine my sister, sister in law and cousin all have them and no problems with them at all. It could be just what you need. It’s hard all the scary stories if you didn’t look on the internet you’d be fine remember most people that get on well don’t post anything it’s always going to be a bit on the negative side. Hope it goes well

whattodo455 · 04/02/2026 09:15

I’ve had a really positive experience so far. The only issue I’ve had is light bleeding that’s lasted around nine days so far, which I was told is normal with the first period. I can already feel my hormones starting to settle. The week where I was still taking Utrogestan wasn’t great. I felt very bloated and my hormones felt all over the place, but since taking my last tablet, that has settled down. Glad to hear you have had a positive experience too, as you say you hear so many horror stories about it.

failtegusslan · 04/02/2026 10:40

I had a coil fitted a year ago - as others said, the fitting was unpleasant (had issues and air). It took about 6bwerks to settle down and I haven't had a period since (was having them every 3 weeks which is why they recommended a coil). I'm really pleased with it!

Questions26 · 13/05/2026 15:56

@whattodo455 Hi there! Reviving this, as I'm curious to see how you are getting on a few months on?

I have thickened uterine lining and they are suggesting Mirena, which I see can work really well, but I absolutely ballooned (eg size small 12 to a 16) when I went on it a few years ago and it took me ages to get the weight off. It really affected my mental health!

However, I was early 40s and now I am 50 so I am wondering if I will have a different experience.

trainedopossum · 13/05/2026 18:21

I switched from Utrogestan because it was making me feel so awful (tearful, depressed etc even when taken vaginally). I was talked into a Mirena because I was also booked for a hysteroscopy under GA so they were able to do both at once.

I wasn’t happy about it but I was at such a low ebb with menopause and just took a chance.

It provides progesterone with no side effects and if I didn’t know I’d had it there would be no indication. Sort of wish I’d done it sooner when I had the terrible peri flooding.

Not sure what I’ll do when I have to have it removed/replaced, I’m not looking forward to that.

whattodo455 · 13/05/2026 18:35

@Questions26 I am thinking about having it removed. My skin has gone terrible on my face especially around my nose. I have red inflamed skin and also starting to get spots which I have never suffered with. Apparently this is a side effect to being sensitive to progesterone. I am also feeling like i have more of a short fuse than I did before having it fitted. I do have young children and I am thinking, is it because I am an older mum I have no patience. But it’s since I had it fitted I have noticed a xhange. I am going to wait another month and if my skin and mood is no better, I will ask for it to be removed.
