Ive Had a lump in my left breast for 6 weeks I’ve finally gone to the gp and he’s put in a urgent referral to the breast clinic for a ultrasound and possibly a biopsy, I’m freaking out abit now, just wondering if anyone’s been through this and how did it go?

I've been referred three times on the two week wait cancer pathway for lumps in my boobs, and every time it's been nothing. They'll have a feeling, ultrasound the lump and surrounding tissue, and if a biopsy is needed they'll do that too. But I've only ever needed the ultrasound for them to be able to tell it is fine.

Justputsomeyoghurtonit · 04/11/2025 12:41

I've done it twice. Once all via NHS and second time the NHS nurse checked me at the clinic and referred me for mammogram, but I got a faster appt privately.

Both times I had a mammogram, ultrasound and then met the consultant to review immediately.

Both times were lumpy hormonal breasts. Once in my 30s and then late 40s after starting HRT.

Justputsomeyoghurtonit · 04/11/2025 12:42

Good luck! X

I had a lump and got sent to the breast cancer centre. They first did a physical exam, then a mammogram, then an ultrasound. The mammogram is a bit painful and I had to go in twice as I have extremely dense breast tissue.
Once they did the ultrasound they were confident it was a cyst and they discharged me.

It all took about an hour.

If it was more suspicious the ultrasound would have been followed by a biopsy and then if it's cancer they tell you and arrange treatment.

80% of breast lumps sent by GP to the clinic are non cancerous. So statistics are on your side! X

I'm in the same position, went to GP yesterday after having a really itchy armpit and lump in breast. Have been referred and waiting for my appointment, have you had yours yet? I am super anxious although have had a lump which was a cyst in the past. I am now older and on HRT though so a bit more worried.

Girliefriendlikespuppies · 12/11/2025 21:01

Yes been through the exact same thing a couple of weeks ago, all lumps will be referred on the two week wait however the vast majority of lumps are completely harmless. Mine was diagnosed as a cyst.

I took a friend with me, I think the general advice is to take someone with you just incase as by the end of your appointment you will pretty much know if there’s something to worry about or not.

boobies1234 · 12/11/2025 21:07

Yep been twice and both times been fine.

DearLemur · 12/11/2025 22:09

I think the waiting for the appointment is so hard! time has never gone so slow

Mamaxo · 14/11/2025 21:15

@DearLemuryeah my appointment is the 26th, found another lump under my arm pit same side but just keep telling myself age is on my side I’m only 29(nearly 30) so it’s most likely a cyst but can’t wait to get the appointment over with x

DearLemur · 14/11/2025 21:40

So they've offered you an appointment for 3 weeks after your initial appointment. I called the clinic today and there was a message to say they'll aim to see you within 28 days, I thought they were meant to see you within 2 weeks. I can't bear waiting 28 days. Yes you are young so age definitely on your side x

Mamaxo · 15/11/2025 20:54

@DearLemuri might be wrong but I don’t think urgent referral is 2 weeks anymore I think it’s 4 and there seeing me in that time frame, I’m obviously anxious it took me 2 months to go to the drs so had the lumps for nearly 3 months and another one has appeared since then, have you heard anything? X

OP posts:
DearLemur · 17/11/2025 06:38

@Mamaxo No I haven't heard anything 😕 I don't know how long I've had my lump to be honest as it was the Dr who felt it and I can only feel it if I raise my arm. I go from being positive and getting on with things to really scared... it's going to be a long wait xx

Bobishere · 20/11/2025 12:34

Same here.
Found a lump and was referred by GP to breast clinic.
my appointment is next Tuesday and it’s awful waiting. I’m on a see saw! Some days I feel ok and happy to wait until I know if I need to worry and then the next day I’m worried. I said to someone its like Shrodingers Cat…. I’m both ok and not ok at the same time.Good luck for your appointment.

Meadowfinch · 20/11/2025 12:42

OP, I've been referred twice. The first time they did a secondary scan and said it was a grain of calcium buildup. The second time, 6 years later and in the same place, it was positive with a 22mm tumour.

After a course of treatment I'm fine. No further treatment required.

I hope your scan shows nothing, but even if it is positive, do try not to panic. The breastcare service is superb and they will guide you through how to handle whatever results.

The competence, professionalism and support the NHS showed me were world class. Good luck.

Waiting for appointments, or results is awful.

I felt a lump over the summer. Told my GP in late September, was referred to the breast clinic.
There I had a mammogram and from there was sent to an ultrasound. During the ultrasound I was told that they would do a biopsy.
I was told two weeks until results. After about 20 days I chased it and was given an appointment.
I wasn't unduly worried

At the end of October I was told I had stage 2, grade 3 breast cancer.
Which was a total surprise to me. I feel very healthy and well in myself.
Have had trouble getting my head round it but I'm getting there.
I'm starting chemo on Wednesday

I'm not writing this to add to your anxiety
Please try and look at it this way:
you did well feeling the lump and going to the GP.
Don't give yourself a hard time over "I shouldn't have waited that long" but congratulate yourself that you didn't wait longer! Many people would have!

Secondly, if it's harmless, well done for getting peace of mind
If it's not harmless, well done for setting wheels in motion!

All the very best for you

I've been referred on three separate occasions to the breast clinic. First time, they physically checked the lump, performed a mammogram and then aspirated it as it was a cyst. They did tell me others were present and whenever I feel one to go back. A few weeks later another lump appeared. Got referred again and this time they didnt do a mammogram but aspirated it. I asked them to also aspirate a few smaller ones that were present while i was there. They said if i would be ok with having sore breasts they would do it for me. They were all cysts. After finding another a few months later, I went back and had a further two aspirated. Some people just have multiple cysts. I get mine sorted as soon as I can feel them. There are several more in there but they are tiny in size. Cysts are very common. Try not to worry.

ohdoriswheresthesalad · 21/11/2025 19:39

I was referred due to my fibrous cyst being more prominent due to losing alot of weight (mounjaro) and I was worried. Went Tuesday, was told nothing to worry about, went for mammogram and was told I had calcium inside the fibrous lump. I had my biopsy yesterday and results on the 4/12. The ladies Tuesday weren’t overly optimistic but yesterday they said they don’t think there is nothing to worry about. She said they don’t say that lightly.

BashfulClam · 21/11/2025 19:46

Where are you in your cycle? I had a lump and went to the GP she felt it and sent referred me. The morning of my appointment my period started and the lump disappeared, it was a bloody hormonal cyst. I was so embarrassed as the consultant couldn’t feel it. I still had a mammogram and an ultrasound where the woman doing the ultrasound could see the cyst. They diagnosed me with cystic tissue due to age (I was 42) and told me if I have a lump again wait till after my period and if it doesn’t resolve then it get it checked.

Mamaxo · 25/11/2025 13:29

LoudSnoringDog · 26/11/2025 18:09

How did you get on OP? I noticed a dimple on my right breast. Had a gp appt on October 9th- she felt a lump. Mammogram and biopsy on Oct 14th

found out on Nov 11th I have grade 1 breast cancer. Lumpectomy next Thursday and then some radiotherapy and anti hormone meds. Trying to be positive but struggling on the inside x.

Hope your appt went ok

Ratbag7 · 26/11/2025 18:44

I had a lump and it did turn out to be stage 2 breast cancer. I had the whole works, chemo, radiotherapy, double mastectomy (I only needed one side but they agreed that I could have them both removed and replaced with perky implants) and still alive and kicking 7 years later. I didn’t even fully lose my hair as used cold cap which was importantl for me as have children). Any questions, happy to respond.

Mamaxo · 26/11/2025 20:01

My appointment went amazing turns out I just have lumpy boobs since having my son a year ago, I didn’t know boobs could change? 😂 I definitely feel like I wasted there time 😩 but all clear, thank you all for your support, and I hope everyone who’s going through shitty cancer recover and feel there self again 🩷
