Vaginal oestrogen. I bet you aren't using that.

You need Estriol cream. Move your thread to the meno board and about 100 women will shout VAGINAL OESTROGEN at you!

Second this. I had a couple of urine infections few years back, having rarely had them. GP suggested vaginal oestrogen because of atrophy. I only pee once during night now.

Yes that's my experience. I was up countless times a night but once I started using a ton of estriol cream I now sleep 7hrs a night with no disturbance at all.

gingercat02 · 14/10/2025 08:08

I'm 56 rarely get up in the night, even the nights I don't sleep well. DH is 55 and gets up once most nights.
Could be type 2 diabetes, any other symptoms? Excessive thirst, thrush, unusual tiredness?

anon199900 · 14/10/2025 08:10

I’m 40 and this was me until I was given oestrogen pessaries… total game changer!

BlueandWhitePorcelain · 14/10/2025 08:11

I second the above posters (late 60s). I felt the need to go to the toilet was dominating my life, and I’d never needed to go particularly often, until a few years ago! was told by my GP:

  1. No caffeine
  2. No fizzy drinks
  3. Vaginal oestrogen

So long as I do the above, I don’t need to go in the night until about 7 - 8 am; and don’t feel like I need to go every hour in the daytime!

Magnesium is suggested for every thing on here. That seems odd to me.

Well since taking it, I no longer have many trips to the loo and can sleep right through, I dont get aches and pains in bed like I used to when peri cropped up, Ive also lost that anxiety in the morning (most of the time) that also came on in peri. I also find it helps with digestion issues.

I take a 6 in 1 combination. If I forget or dont take it for a few days the symptoms come back.

Following with interest. I’m 45 and wake 3-6 times a night to pee. It’s been getting steadily worse the last few years. I too am having to now use incontinence pads in the day as I constantly leak. I’m peeing more in the day too, and I’m more thirsty than I’ve ever been. I had a diabetes test a week ago at the drs but they said that was fine. I’ve switched to caffeine free Pepsi max from around 7pm onwards - maybe I need to start that earlier because it is making a difference. I need to send an e-consult to the drs to book an appointment they said when they did the diabetes test, but I’ve not done it yet.

These comments are so interesting and helpful . Im going to try magnesium and see if it helps . I’m already taking oestrogen cream and it’s made no difference sadly

Oestrogen pessaries in the foof, OP - are you using those? Vagifem.

Standard dose is twice a week but I need more than that (4 ish) to keep an irritable bladder under control. I’d be lost without them.

If that stops working for me I’m eyeing Jude supplements next.

Lottapianos · 14/10/2025 20:16

People who use vaginal oestrogen, do you use it every day? Is it a terrible faff?

Wadadli · 14/10/2025 20:19

@secureyourbook I take 375 mg with 14 mg vitamin B6, broken in two as they’re fucking enormous! My sleep improved within a few days, and I get mine from Poundland

Good luck 💐

FoxRedPuppy · 14/10/2025 20:20

I’ve need to pee 3 x a night since I gave birth, so about 15 years! I’m now mid- 40s

Glitchymn1 · 14/10/2025 20:21

I have always needed to go for as long as I can remember, at least once, mostly twice.
I suppose it’s what’s normal for you? So if you’ve a change maybe make an appointment? I believe you can get over the counter urine tests, if you don’t want to see a G.P just yet.

You need it applied vaginally a not taken orally

WinWhenTheyreSinging · 14/10/2025 20:31

I’ve been having real issues with this too. My sister sent me this article last week, and interestingly a nightly aspirin really is helping - at the most I’ve been up once, but have a few nights that I’ve not got up at all, for the first time in weeks.

I feel like mine stems from a Mounjaro-induced change to my HRT. Obviously, I am also talking to the doctor and working my way through tests for UTIs, before we presumably get to other tests. I don’t want to be taking daily aspirin for it as there is probably a hormone-related cause with a better treatment (or a change in HRT), but for the moment while that works through at least it’s getting me some sleep!

*This is not medical advice, blah 😆

Ask Dr James: Why do I keep needing the toilet in the night?

In his regular column, Dr James Le Fanu answers your questions. This week, a reader asks whether her overactive bladder diagnosis is correct

TheCountessofFitzdotterel · 14/10/2025 07:55

With me the problem was a fibroid. When it was removed it was like magic, I could sleep through the night again.
There are many other causes but this might apply to someone.
(In retrospect I am angry because it should have been so easily identified and solved, if only I had been listened to when it began instead of being fobbed off with guff about how it must be my fault for not doing my pelvic floor exercises properly.)

Yes me too. It’s really worth asking your GP to explore all options, including blood tests and vaginal scan. A lot of people assume it must be menopause related and persevere for years trying different supplements and topical estrogen. Obviously this is often the case but not always.

InfoSecInTheCity · 14/10/2025 22:04

T2 Diabetes for me. As soon as I got my sugar level under control I stopped needing to wake up during the night. Now if I have a bad few days and my sugars go high it’s one of the first symptoms to return.

@Timeforabitofpeace

I do, and no, why would it be a faff? I use my fingers to rub some inside/against bladder and then all over my perineum. I feel lovely and moisturised when I wake up.

I use a blob the size of a 50p everyday. GP gives me 4 tubes on each repeat prescription. It helps my prolapses too.

Timeforabitofpeace · 15/10/2025 11:07

@Justputsomeyoghurtonit i think you confused me with someone else. I didn’t comment on that.

Justputsomeyoghurtonit · 15/10/2025 11:11

Comment was for @Lottapianos 😳

Its normal im up usually twice a night im in my 30s

It’s not normal, and certainly not in your 30s! I’d be getting checked out if I were you.

Zodiacrobat · 15/10/2025 11:40

I would see a pelvic health specialist physio as well as GP. You may need vaginal oestrogen from GP which can be a game changer for many women plus pelvic floor strengthening can help. As vaginal walls thin, you can “feel” the bladder more and it feels like you need to wee, but actually there’s not much there. The oestrogen really helps with reducing that feeling of pressure.

Also read up on overactive bladder. And get yourself checked for T2 diabetes just for safety.

Haha just said my piece then read down the thread - glad to see you are also recommending VOe it’s amazing for many women.

It’s a super important mineral that most of us are lacking. When you read up about what it does and helps in our bodies, that might explain it to you.
